I think this was brought up not too long ago, but I don't think Shane/Kayla were as awful as they are made out to be.  I would agree it's a bit more interesting to analyze than watch though lol.

There is of course the question of whether Kayla or Shane would ever do that to Kim, but in the larger sense it works for both characters.  MBE/CS had a nice chemistry and worked well together.  Considering both had just gotten out of these huge, messy, supercouple relationships I don't think either were looking for a great love match.  As both Shane/Kayla were the less chaotic part of their former relationships, I could see the appeal of getting involved with someone more steady and stable.

I do like Kayla finally standing up for her family.  She and Shane wanted to be together.  Why should everyone pressure her to give up her happiness just because Kim was sad?  Kim had a lot of chances to make it right with Shane and said she moved on.  So Kayla should just be pushed aside again because Kim changed her mind?  I say that as a bigger fan of Kim than of Kayla.

Anyhow, to me it always seemed obvious this was a way to burn out MBE and CS's remaining contracts and not a serious endgame match.   With SN gone and PP having some personal issues it really made sense with what the show had to work with at the time.  I am not saying it's an amazing story, but it's far from the worst story of that era.

@carolinegWell, I certainly totally respect your right to disagree & have an appreciation for the reasons you lay out, but, I still am going to continue to name Kayla & Shayne as one of the worst pairings DAYS ever attempted. And, honestly, I did not think Kim gave her sister a hard time over it. She was pretty cool about it & they had a number of good sister scenes where it was clear they were very okay with each other. I think for me it's just too icky. The scene with the two of them, with their little ones, in the airplane, with turbulence, is a lovely scene.

Because I am curious, what pairing or pairings do you find objectionable?

I could probably name 50 Days of our lives pairings more offensive than Shane/Kayla.  It didn't involve coercion, deception, violence, brainwashing, or manipulation and lies.  It was just a relationship between two decent people that were deeply hurt at the time and ended amicably.

Did I like the pairing?  Not especially.  Was it shady what they did to Kim?  Sure.  But in the end it's a blip on the radar for both characters and Shane/Kim and Kayla/Steve as love stories.  I am not saying it was a fabulous idea.  I just don't think it was as awful as everyone makes it out to be.  It actually helps explain a lot of nuances of the Brady sisters and the Brady family as having clear favorites.

Clearly you are looking at one of the really "low bars" when it comes to pairings on DAYS. Obviously I would be 100% against any pairing that involved any of that. I have zero curiosity about any pairing that would qualify so utterly poorly. I was thinking only in the realm of real couples, not trash.

I think you are confusing me defending some interesting aspects of the story as a full endorsement of Shane/Kayla as a couple.  I am not.  It was clearly widely panned by the audience and critics.  I just think, especially in rewatch, it was as awful as everyone says it was.  You have seen Days the last 30 or so years, right?  A short term romance with Shane/Kayla is not even close to being one of the worst pairings or ideas ever.   I don't even think it was the worst pairing on Days that year.

I've narrowed it down to the first week of May. According to the Jon-Michael Reed recaps, "Don broke up a hair-pulling, name-calling cat fight between Liz and Marie." By the end of the week, Liz had shot Marie after mistaking her for a prowler (and after having shtupped Neil).

Peter Reckell's debut episode I just noticed, but I think I only have the script pages regarding Bo in that one. I see in my notes that I have many pages of the 5/2/83 script, so I'll check in the filing cabinet, see if anything can be found of Liz/Marie.

    • That era is so weird...they made a big deal out of all three of those characters and then they just..disappeared! Not that I am complaining. We talk about the bad out of character writing for Alex under JFP..but this was one example that may have led them to write her being so obsessive with Nick.  WHY would Alex accept Flock of Seagulls guy as her brother? They had her in one scene (setting up the Alan return) complain that Alan abandoned her...she blackmailed him into leaving town and she had been angry at him for helping Brandon with Lujack and also using Spaulding for that dumb dreaming death thing. Endless scenes of her with Simon, I can't believe Bev wasn't bored to death! I would also add Pam writing the scene where she lets Ms. Sally die in front of her to protect Alan and  the writing for Alex could be screwy even before JFP.
    • On this day 34 years ago the final episode of Dallas and came in at an astonishing #2 in the ratings after two straight seasons of weak ratings. Interesting Knots was #27 for that week as well:

    • Thank you for clearing that up. I wasn't watching GL regularly yet at that point, but seems to me I should have remembered the big wedding after Leslie's death (which I do remember) described in the profile. Is there a web archive of SOD summaries, or are referring to your own personal collection?
    • I was bummed that 2.0 ended because Mcpherson (headwriter) had really set up some interesting stories and we never got to find out where the stories would go once they resumed production on 'season 2'. I remembered the EP (Ginger Smith) and a lot of the stars gave a lot of credit to McPherson being able to come in on very short notice and come up with stories/plots (I think it was a very short turnaround time of a few weeks).  It was nice that she got to redeem herself after her year long Days stint was not well reviewed/liked.

    • It seems like a setup for failure to review a single episode of a soap, but Cleveland Amory was a foolish man.  His taste was so predictable, that one wondered why bother reviewing a medium he so clearly disliked. (found on Facebook retro TV group) Another case in point of his misogyny from his review of Dark Shadows (Can you imagine the magazine with the widest circulation in the country insulting its customer in this way today?)

    • They could easily be re-created, or even re-shot in different ways, especially if they were re-shooting scenes at some point, as well.
    • The Ted recast really is a shame because now they won't be able to do flashbacks to the best scenes the show has done to date.
    • That would be an AMAZING twist.
