It's either something related to a project he is involved in in school(he's working towards some sort of degree) or he's preparing for an upcoming role. I tend to think it's the school aspect. He's also doing Thirty Rock with Tina Fey on NBC and he did that appearence on SNL not too long ago I believe.

James Franco confirmed to host SNL!

James Franco who is currently on General Hospital, and who taped an episode of 30 Rock playing himself is now going to have his turn at hosting duties for an upcoming episode of Saturday Night Live!

Franco will host the December 19th Christmas show.
