From the NY Times:

What’s Behind That Curtain? ‘Let’s Make a Deal’ to Replace ‘Guiding Light’

By Edward Wyatt

Fred Westbrook Collection/GSN

Monty Hall was the original host of “Let’s Make a Deal.” CBS announced Monday that it will revive the daytime game show “Let’s Make A Deal” to replace the soap opera “Guiding Light,” which the network said earlier this year will end its decades-long run in September.

“Let’s Make A Deal,” the 1960s and 1970s staple that featured audience members in wacky costumes taking a chance on what was behind door No. 3, will return to the CBS daytime schedule Oct. 5 with a new host but with many of the old games and structure. Wayne Brady, most recently the host of the primetime game show “Don’t Forget the Lyrics” on Fox, will take over the role filled by Monty Hall on the original program.

“Guiding Light” began on CBS in 1952 after more than a decade on NBC radio. After a presentation to the Television Critics Association in Pasadena, Calif., Nina Tassler, the president of CBS Entertainment, warned of other potential daytime changes. She said that another long-running CBS soap, “As The World Turns,” is also facing “ratings challenges” and that CBS is “looking at all of daytime very carefully.”

Ms. Tassler said that CBS had taped three game-show pilots, including “Let’s Make A Deal,” in the search for a replacement for “Guiding Light,” indicating that it might have a potential replacement ready to go if it decides that “As The World Turns” has also run its course. Game shows generally are far cheaper to make than daytime dramas, another factor that might weigh in the CBS decision.

Well, not like this is unexpected. With GL gone, ATWT likely only has a year left.

They believe that these shows can't be fixed, and in many cases, I agree. No writing regime or producer changes are going to have a significant impact on the ratings.

Since Y&R is still the #1 soap, it has nothing to lose by bringing in a new writing and producing regime though, since this current regime seems intent on sinking this show as low as the other soaps.

I think it's a no brainer that this coming season will be ATWT's last. If GL didn't hit the magic number of 1.8 and got cancelled and ATWT has been hovering in the 1.6, 1.7 range, do the math. ATWT's demos aren't that much higher than GL's and GL looks alot cheaper to produce.

So not only is Bloom incompetent, so is the person that hired her? Is Tassler her boss or? Anyway, they are all stupid for not being able to see that their people are doing a lousy job at keeping this industry alive.

CBS will probably be out of the soap business by 2011. Most if not all of the GL and ATWT viewers will tune out the remaining soaps left on CBS. Y&R and B&B numbers will continue to erode. Stupid Hacks....
