Members DRW50
I think some can still write, they just aren't given the opportunity. None of the people in charge of Y&R can write anything beyond their own complexes. They don't like soaps, they don't like the soap format, they look down on it and on viewers. This is what we get as a result.
Members alphanguy74
True... BUT, if both these shows still make a profit because of the international sales, then both shows could STILL be produced, and sold overseas, and viewed domestically on soapnet, or they might wrangle FOX into carrying the show for some baragain basement price. If the show goes from making tens of millions in profit to only making a few million in profit, what are the Bells going to do? Open a Macdonald's franchise instead? I don't think Sony really cares, as long as the show doesn't LOSE money.
Members DeeeDee
Sony cares about turning CBS Daytime into ABC Daytime.
Members bellcurve
How do you know?! BINGO! CBS doesn't see any of B&B's international revenue. They don't own the show and, unfortunately, B&B cannot survive on ONLY its international revenue unless the head cheeses wanted to give themselves a massive paycut. The cost-cutting is severely affecting B&B, not only in terms of aesthetics, but also acting and writing.
Members YRBB
Ugh, I have been refusing to believe that it's just a matter of 3-5 years for the soaps to end (hoping, instead, that at least some would make it another decade) but it seems that we are very steadily (and quickly) heading to cancellation-ville. I wonder if this will allow fresher, better-written soaps to surface... Or will daytime soaps become completely obsolete?
Members bellcurve
The latter.
Members DRW50
I don't think it will be too long before daytime has no original programming whatsoever, be it soap or game show or talk show.

Members alphanguy74
I still think it's a bunch of bunk. These shows, even ATWT are not losing money. They just are not making the hand over fist dollars the networks are used to. The prime time success of these dumb ass reality shows has made the dollar signs flash in the eyes of the network execs.. it's greed, pure and simple. They don't care to make a respectable profit and turn out quality product. It's all about how much money they cna get for the least amount of money. If some multi-billionaire would produce Y&R at a loss, and hand it over to CBS for the sum of 1$ per year... it would be on till the year 2100, even if it was pulling a 1.
