Y&R: Potpourri Thread 2

Be patient and when things don't get better, which has been the case with Y&R to many, then what?

That's the problem with pollyannas and apologists, they keep excusing badly written crap and when things don't get better, they make up more excuses for why it's not happening to justify the crappy condition of the show. They can't admit when something is broken, and live in utter denial about the circumstances.

So anyway, "Colleen" will be dying when she drowns next week or so....

so again, why do we need another death? Also, why did they have to kill off a girl whose father they killed off similarly earlier in the year? We saw that there was NO AFTERMATH or ramifications from Brad's death. So, the question remains, why this this hack regime like killing off characters constantly? Doesn't anyone leave town anymore?

They seem to be killing their net generation anyway. No one can come of with lame excuses for why "Colleen" had to die, regardless of the actress. The character has many ties on the show and could have been a vital part of it.The role could have also been recast.

Will there be any real ramifications from Colleen's death? If Brad's death showed us anything and knowing how this writing regime of hacks like to skip over everything, I seriously doubt it.

alphanguy74, didn't you say you were going to be very upset if they killed Colleen off?

I just said 2/3 of the show is shitty SL's, how is that apologist? And how patient do you be? For me, being patient in the soap world is waiting a year or two, not a few weeks, like you seem to think. There where that instant gratification thing comes in. When the reliquary was going on, I suffered through it, and things got better again. Now things are in a bad place OVERALL, but there are still things to enjoy on a day to day basis. But I'm not one to throw the whole apple away because of a bruise, I trim it off, and eat the rest.

I SO agree with this post!! Y&R doesn't know how to write for minority characters, period; perhaps they should take some lessons from OLTL in this instance.

FYI: I've never associated any drug as a black, white or gay drug of choice however there are such a thing as a rich man's drug of choice and the poor man's drug of choice. ;) I do agree with alphanguy74 though, anyone, regardless of race, that trades sex for drugs are the crack ho's or what have you!

But of course, Y&R has known how to write for them for 25 years... it's just this regime in the last year that has struggled. My defense is of the motivation behind it, and not the lack of SL. I'm not ready to say the show is racist because of a "burp" in the presence of black SL over a 25 year period. I honestly see them as not really knowing what to DO WITH THESE black characters. In the Winters family, the two main characters that drove story ar GONE, Dru, and Malcolm. And both actors were NOT fired, they left of their own volition. Shemar is willing to come back, but only for a little bit... and while that might be nice for some, it doesn't do the long term black SL any real service, and with Rowell gone as well, your'e left with Lily, who is an anoying character, played by an equally annoying actress, and Neil and Olivia, who are both reactionary fuddy-duddies. All your spark is gone, and it's hard to know what to do with what's left. I think Neil leaving Victor and hooking up with Kay was an attempt at that. I also think Olivia being involved in the early parts of Ashley's gaslight SL are ALSO an attempt at that. I just think they are struggling at what to do with them, and they havne't figure dit out yet. I don't see it as some racist KKK soap opera conspiracy theory that some do. The major complaint I have in this department right NOW, is the absence of Kristoff, that just doens't make any kind of sense, no matter HOW you slice it. It almost smells like they are "punishing" him for some backstage whatever that we don't know about... which might explain his terse interview a couple weeks ago.

So might, some usually steal from family memebers. Money or other things to sell on the street to get the money. If things get to deep. They will ask a family memeber to help them out of a jam. I guess if you love that family memeber you'll pay it off for them. Some get the cash from their welfare card. When I was 8 to 10 my brother use to play this game with his younger siblings. 5 would get you 10. 10 would get you 20.

Didn't Crack Ho Yolanda ask Devon for money? Didn't she also went to the Winters house a stole some stuff.

That's just it, the Winters family needs their Dru back since she was the backbone and fire of the family. Neil is too boring of a character to fulfill that role and CK's Lily is just as bland. Could Rauch's influence be the blame here even though MAB claims that it's HER vision or is it equal distribution of fault?

I agree and that was my intention of the minorities comment. The women are one of my biggest gripes right now. They are either so out of character (as in Mac sleeping with a married Billy), bitchy, weak or insignificant (Colleen).

    • That's a bit murky since that happened during a writers' strike. Assuming Kristen Marie had a 2-year contract she left about when her contract would have expired and Sharlene and Josie showed up right before that. Lemay was officially credited as HW from September 1988 but it seems very probable that his anticipated tenure influenced events that happened during the strike which started in April.
    • I've seen so many posters over the years who are bright, creative, well-versed in soap history, and who care deeply about the integrity of the genre. I'd put the shows' chances in their hands a lot faster than I would allow any of the "usual suspects" to take control of the dramas they've already helped decimate. When I returned to university in the 1980s, I created a bible for a new soap and presented it in my screenwriting class. It was in reaction to how badly I saw the network shows being butchered at the time. The creative process was thrilling; a total joy, and I still smile when I remember the positive feedback I received from the professor and my fellow students. I was used to seeing written commentary from professors on my work. This one wrote me a long, complimentary note on the final page of the bible, but also graded it 97%, A+. I was beaming ear to ear for days!

    • Thanks. I do wonder if Rose was meant to be more given the caliber of actress they hired. I remembered Sara and Peggy staying longer as they were still on when Soapnet started their repeats. I wonder if that was part of the reason they brought Jake's brother in.
    • Speculation about Missy Reeves' potential evolution on basic civil rights doesn’t change my opinion of her. My view is shaped entirely by her public social media presence—which I find unpalatable—and I have no interest in learning more beyond that. I simply liked Jennifer’s hair and dress. That’s as far as my admiration goes.

    • Cheryl was gone before Lemay came back but I agree with your thinking that he would rather a character from a family he introduced to the show than a family he did not originate.  I remember reading somewhere in the early 90's probably after DS left as writer, their was an either a writer or a producer who made a comment that their intent was bring the McKinnon family back to AW.  Would have made sense for the newer viewers from the 80's.  Much like Lemay's attempt to bring the Frames back from his writing in the 70's in his 1988 return
    • DePriest left in January 1988. According to the AWHP, Rose last appeared nearly a year before in February 1987 while both Sara and Peggy appeared as late as October 1987.
    • Annie was not brought in as an antagonist for Reva. Reva wasn’t even on the canvas when Annie first appeared in late 1994.
    • The speculation……….very entertaining.
    • I had forgotten that several Days stars came out strong against Melissa. Good for them!
