Webmaster Errol Posted June 24, 2009 Webmaster Share Posted June 24, 2009 Looking into a fix, but if I can't...as long as new posts don't have that problem, we're good.
Members Chris B
If they said Lorie Brooks was returning for the art story or Heather Tom as Vicki to headline it, I would still complain. I largely am enjoying Y&R right now, but if you mention that art story or that quad I'm just going to lose my mind! Anything that propels either story is going to irritate me. I think the quad had potential to be a CLASSIC soap triangle, but it's so poorly written and wishy-washy that it's unwatchable.
Members JackPeyton
I agree. Y&R added human into Amber's character, and Adrianne excelled at it, IMHO. THIS! Honestly, Y&R reminds me of OLTL post-writers strike right now. So not a god thing.
Members rhythmchyc
Oh, nothing will save it. But there may be storylines that branch out of this that have the possibility of being somewhat decent, compared to the utter debacle this is. It's like a Monet up-close... I agree with you here. I want to see the Winters. I want to see Nikki full-throttle. So adding on an unnecessary character when is just wacky considering their budget. But I don't want to say that this art-story is dead in the water because it got off to a rocky start. There are so many elements capable of bursting and being great (Daniel's insecurity about being a successful artist compared to Amber, Jana's headaches, how proving Daniel's innocence may weaken the binds of his relationship with Amber- who had wanted to get married where he didn't). If they play this right, these all could be powerful scenes to see. Of course, of course, it can't be expected because of how shallow all of these characters have become but still. I can only hope. I found it incredibly odd how Gloria and Jeffrey weren't at court today. I just realized this. This is just as odd as Noah being absent all those months and Della's character missing the adoption hearing. Very sad how these budget constraints and new schedules are ruining Y&R's storytelling. I haven't. I'll google him. I put up her regime with Sheffer and Hamner because it was drastically different with her regime with Griffiths. Dec. '07- the middle of last year was a huge snooze and a half. When Sheffer came on, a lot more drama occurred, which was such a breath of fresh air. I give whomever made that decision kudos for knowing that Y&R for the first half of last year was not working out and decided it was time to change it. I don't know who made that decision. But I still think what MAB brings is some sort of historical background to a portion of Y&R. She has miles to go and she needs help from other writers, I think. Still, she provides a good basis at this point considering, as dmarex said earlier somewhere, Y&R will just get another fired HW from another craptastic show. I'd rather someone who knows the history somewhat run the damn thing and continue to hire writers who are really good at what they're doing. Y&R needs stability. If someone else takes the reigns, it'll be another couple of years before this show gets back on track and who knows where these characters will be by then. I'm not saying the art story is not unwatchable. I'm saying from this dreadful place, it may lead to something down the line. I think, again, a majority of the board, if not everyone hates this plot-driven mess. But I don't want to give up on it yet.
Members Y&RWorldTurner
There's nothing wrong with using history, but I don't like the way MAB uses it. She hits us over the head with it, and it doesn't add depth to her storylines. Too many of her storylines are repeats from the past that only serve the present. She's laid no groundwork for the future, which daytime and Y&R especially sued to do so well. Use history, but make sure there's some set up for the future. Too many of the storylines draw from past history, and the ones that don't, like this art mess are horrible, badly plotted, and badly executed. MAB's hiring of writers is problematic. She has too many writers on team, which must take up a great deal of the budget. Again, why does she NEED 2 C-Head writers? Y&R is the only soap with 3 HW's, and the disjointedness of took many cooks being in the kitchen is very apparent on the current show, IMO. Also a lot of the scirpt writers, like Lisa Connor (who also does breakdowns) haven't seen very good. Stability is nice, but nothing has been stable about MAB's writing team. She keeps hiring and firing various different writers. This show needs a strong storyteller than can work with a small close group of sub-writers, IMO. I don't perceive Maria Arena Bell or her Co-HW's to be strong storytellers and I think their bloated writing staff hinders the show, not help it. Members rhythmchyc
^^ Probably cause he's a drunk. ETA: Apparently he's cleaned up so. Hopefully he's much better now. This pic was from Feb. He'll scrub up and be all a bit less orange for Genoa City, let's hope.
Members alphanguy74
When it comes to Kanan... frankly... put him in a pair of TIGHT, LIGHT COLORED boxer briefs, and I won't give a damn WHAT comes out of his mouth. And Rhythmchyc, I SO agree with your assessment. If the current writing is not working out (and I only feel PARTS aren't)then I'm all for leaving Maria as the captain and trying other people to put with her until we find someone who complements her, helps her, and brings out her best qualities. Meg Bennett was mentioned, others are possibilities. I LOVE the way she uses history, I LOVE being hit over the head with it, and so does my mother, she's enjoying the show SO MUCH right now. I think it's a matter of long-term viewers (20+years) being catered to, while shorter term viewers don't have those emotional connections to the old characters (Like Phillip III) IT depends if the actor is good enough to make the younger viewer care, and in the case of Bierdz, we need not worry, he's got that ability in SPADES. I think she can write romance (Katherine and Murphy) but it's just that romance is passe' in today's TV world. Shock, Awe, and slutty are all the rage. Consider the number one female singer 30 years ago was Olivia Newton John, and today, it's Britney Spears... need I say more? When it comes to the tastes of today's viewer, that's the kind of taste wer'e talking about here.
Members Y&RWorldTurner
Katherine and Murphy were the only romantic thing on this show a few months back, now we never see Murphy. Katherine hardly ever brings up the fact she has a new husband anymore. But this show still lacks serious romance and most of the couples are nauseating and chemistry-less like Lily and Cane, or they're apart of some crappy triangle like Billy/Mac/Chole or Nick/Sharon/Phyllis, and there isn't anything romantic about that inane quad. Also, when your only source of romance are 80 year olds that are hardly on together, you know something has gone wrong.
