Members vetsoapfan
After her passing, John did not mention Lee much (if at all) for a long time. Then one day, Pat and Marianne had a conversation about her. This was under Harding Lemay. Marianne asked her mom why John never spoke about Lee, and Pat acknowledged that he still found it unbearable, because losing her was so painful. Also under Lemay, someone brought up Aunt Liz's late son Bill. Irene Dailey (who played the moment beautifully) choked right up and struggled to get the words out: "There are some things you never really get over." Both of this scenes were poignant examples of the small moments soaps can do so well.
Members DRW50
Thank you. That sounds very poignant. Sometimes I wonder if John sabotaged his marriage to Pat because of all the grief and guilt over outliving his daughter.
Members vetsoapfan
In real life, many parents would become self-destructive in that circumstance, I believe. I cannot imagine anything being worse than losing your child. I'm not being facetious or making a joke when I say that even losing my beloved dog sent me into deep despair for an extended period. Losing a child would literally kill me. Edited June 25, 2024 by vetsoapfan

Members AbcNbc247
I remember he said in the book that the role of Willis was catered to John Fitzpatrick’s acting talents and that with the recast, the character seemed to completely change in a lot of ways
Members NothinButAttitude
It would've been so fun to have Mike, Hope, and Alan Michael in Bay City during the years they weren't on GL. But characters moving to other shows would've spared a lot of shows of getting rid of actors they felt were in a corner, but they didn't truly want to get rid of.
Members Xanthe
Lemay seems to have identified very strongly with Willis as portrayed by Fitzpatrick. He blames Fitzpatrick's absence on the failure of the love triangle between Willis, Angie, and Alice. (Because there is no way that it could be the Alice recast.) He also suggests that part of the reason Laurie Heineman was let go was because Sharlene's storyline didn't work as well against Russom's interpretation of Willis. I think perhaps Lemay was trying to rationalize how he came to terms with Heineman leaving since the real bottom line seems to have been that Paul Rauch thought she was difficult on set.
Members Mona Kane Croft
I watched daily during the entire Lemay era, and I don't remember anyone ever mentioning Lee during those years (although she may have been mentioned and I simply don't remember it). It seems strange, since Lemay often liked to refer to the show's past. Same for Janet Matthews. I don't recall her name being mentioned during Lemay's run either. Not even when Mary died, and they were notifying the family. But oddly, Mitchell Dru was referenced at least one time in a Lemay episode. Members teplin
Or the Willis recast for that matter. Leon Russom is a wonderful actor, but I didn't buy for a moment that Angie or Alice would be attracted to him. The pairing with Gwen worked, though.

Members vetsoapfan
Both AW and TGL were riddled with so many disposable and irrelevant characters in their later years; many of whom never caught on with the audience (IMHO). If either show could have benefited by crossing over highly-popular actors/characters from the other soap, it would have been a bonus for the audience to continue seeing old friends on screen. I never felt there was any real chemistry between Willis and Angie, or Will and NuAlice. Plus, the idea of Alice falling in love with him felt absurd to me, since she had already made it clear she did not trust Willis. What??? An actor who vexed Paul Rauch??? Whoever heard of such a scenario? Please register in order to view this content I remember Uncle Dru being talked about when the family received a postcard from him after he had left town on his world tour in 1971. Russom just wasn't leading man material. For Alice, especially, the show needed a dynamic romantic lead for her. When Jacquie Courtney returned in 1984, AW tried to pair Alice with the character of Mark Singleton. Actor Robin Thomas was serviceable enough, but had " tepid supporting character" written all over him. That relationship was a dud.

Members Xanthe
Mark Singleton was of course the father of Stacey Winthrop's baby and there was a whole storyline in which Jamie was in love with Stacey who had been having a secret affair with Mark, a married senator. I believe there was blackmail and threats on Stacey's life until Mark's wife died, Stacey and Mark married and left town, and then almost immediately they divorced and Mark came back. Certainly the version of Mark who dated Alice was very mild and innocuous. I don't remember whether he was more aggressive and cunning as a politician or if it was his wife who had all the political cunning and he was just a handsome glad-hander. Not that it makes a real difference, but I wonder what might have been if they had reused/recast Mark Singleton instead of creating the character of Grant. Of course I would have also tried to avoid killing off Megan as well -- it didn't really do anything for Stacey, especially the way it was handled.
Members Contessa Donatella
Hey there & welcome! I've been out of pocket so I am catching up. So nice to have you here. We love all the work & the love that you put in on AWHP!!! People are often surprised at how much love there is for Another World after all this time. And, today is that day, June 25th. I recently thought about the fact that Baby Jasmine, born in a stuck elevator, would today, without benefit of SORASing, be a 25 year old young woman. Personally, I always liked that actor. However, I don't think the writing at that time really did justice.
Members Mona Kane Croft
I understand Bill was killed off because in 1970, Joe Gallison was not interested in returning. TPTB wanted to center AW's new spin-off, Somerset, on Bill and Missy. But when Gallison refused the offer, they killed off Bill and sent Missy to Somerset as a young widow. So at least there was a reasonable cause for killing off Bill. The decision wasn't made thoughtlessly.
