I don’t think she would have played it as much of a victim as Sally Spencer did. 

I don't think Sally Spencer had much of a choice with the writing she was given. AW had a lot of strong female characters then and they lost their backbones.

The episodes we watched last night (didn't have time to post here) were November 8 and 9 1988.

We had Iris already beginning to exploit her new role in the company. Her scene with Felicia Gallant was marvelous. Iris is trying to turn the company upside down and has something negative to say about everything. Just imagine having to work for a person like that. Utter madness. Felicia gave her more grace than she deserved. Told her she's going to think about the remarks Iris gave her draft. Rachel warned Felicia before the meeting and told her she should treat Iris as if she an amateur. But Felicia actually listened. 

Other highlights. Iris found out she is not the only sponsor in Evan the gigolo's life (that's what I'll call him even though he is not an official one). The hatred she was staring at that other woman was hilarious. She was also invited to dinner with Donna and Michael Hudson (who were anxiously waiting to hear about the adoption) and gave Michael the ****-me look again. Donna better watch out for her newfound friend. She's dangerous.

Speaking of Michael, he had a beautiful scene where he told Vicky that as much as she wants Jamie, she doesn't really need him. That she's going to have all the support from her family. If all fathers could be like that. ❤️

But the thing is Vicky does want Jamie. Anne Heche gave quite the performance in a monologue in which Victoria was talking to her unborn child, promising to it that she's going to find a way to make Jamie love her. I teared up. That scene is the last few minutes of this episode.

Overall : 10/10. Tension is rising... The dialogue is more sharp than ever... Things are really starting to move and evolve.

And, when Anne Heche's Victoria wants something, ... look out. When motivated, she is - at the very least - fierce but also determined, focused, laser-targeted, poor Lisa, doesn't stand a chance. 

And, Jamie, he's not going to have any idea what hit him! 

This makes me think of possibly the most iconic picture of Vicky & Jamie.

Line delivery can sometimes influence a writer to change how they write a character.

I watched clips of her first scenes as MJ..and the writing had her being strong and putting her dad in her place.  However, she delivered the lines in a more passive way and her body language was also more passive. 

So when the writing changed for the character, she wasn't able to put in any subtext or flourishes of strength to over come it.

I was about to do a search on Bing Images & the last thing I had searched for was an AW thing so Another World was still sitting in the search bar & I happened to notice a little text bubble saying 

ANOTHER WORLD RED SWAN

suggesting that an actual human being might search for that *thing*!!!! So, I clicked on it of course & here we have both our AW & anime & all manner of red swan stuff. And, there goes 15 minutes I can never get back.

I am rooting for Jamie and Vicky, but I also like Lisa. But Vicky is just... the more interesting one to me in the end.

I loved Joanna Goings as Lisa & in the primetime revival of DARK SHADOWS & in that Caribbean doctors show that Charles Keating was in. However, I did feel sorry for her Lisa, as I think she was out-matched at every turn, and, yes, as you're saying, deserved better. Jamie was kinda a lout to her.

Lisa is really blossoming in these episodes we are watching... she is such a stunning lady... and has that calm, beautiful energy that not many people have. 

For any old time AW viewers: L. Virginia Brown replaced Tom King and Robert Soderberg in Fall 1980 and she lasted 11 months although there was a 3 month writers' strike in spring 81.  Corrine Jacker lasted 11 months as well before being replaced by Soderberg and Dorthea Purser.  I've rewatched some of King/Soderberg and the issue was Rauch and the whole Texas debacle.  I thought the show was recovering nicely in August/Sept 1980 and Judith as Miranda was a great potential bitch Irish replacement. Which of the two writers (Brown or Jacker) was better or worse in your opinion?

I do think she was more inclined to play MJ as weaker, but the writing also made MJ incredibly weak. The show seemed determined to degrade most of the women on the canvas under DePriest, with just a few escaping. Considering DePriest did an entire story revolving around attacking and murdering women who were seen as acting the way a woman shouldn't, if MJ had been strong, she likely would have just been killed off.

I think Sally captured a great deal of vulnerability and sympathy in MJ, even though the material was trash.
