Yep, that's the scene. I could just watch it over and over and over. I really miss VW and Rachel.

From the September 1975 Day TV. Lopez Publications Inc One page is missing, as it had been torn out, but most is intact. I will type up the last page.

Here is the only other page. One page is missing.

there...but it didn't even pay for the trip. Just when I started to feel depression setting in, I flew back to Beverlee and had my faith restored."

Beverlee and Berkeley often strolled over to Central Park or their favorite coffee shop and talk about the past, present and future. "She would give me such strength," Berkeley said, as he gave Beverlee a loving hug. "Together we would look back over the past twenty years of my career and see that in a way, I have made it. 'After all,' Beverlee would tell me, 'look at the wonderful work you've done...and just look at where we are able to live.' She would reinstate that faith that I seemed to be losing."

"Of course, things aren't the happiest...I'd like to take a house on Fire Island and buy her big expensive gift...but then we'd rent a car and drive through the Lower East Side and Harlem, and I'd say, 'I've made it!'"

As we strolled through the park, the fire of love and caring passed from Berkeley to Beverlee, and she to him. I couldn't help but ask why a pair who so openly care for each other, after six years of almost total happiness, had never married.

It was Beverlee who explained that both she and Berkeley had had such rough going during their previous marriages, that they are very cautious about doing it again. "We both seem to find that we are sailing so smoothly living out independent and free lives that we really don't want to try anything new at the moment. We really do love one another and take care of one another...and care for each other's children (Beverlee's 16 year old son, Scott, lives with her in New York...while Berkeley's younger son lives with his ex-wife in California)...in fact, Berkeley attends all of the PTA meetings with me and Scott. And we do have a barrel of fun having dinner together...almost nightly. We have a sort of mutual admiration society going."

When Berkeley was signed to star on "How To Survive a Marriage," the celebrating really took hold. "But this time, we watched our money," Berkeley mused. And he was glad he did since the soap went off the air only months after he was signed.

Berkeley let me in on a rather big secret which he said I could share with you since it shows how he and Beverlee share with each other. "I had to have a lot of work done on my teeth," he explained, "and I just couldn't afford it...but it had to be done. When I told Beverlee about my problem she quickly whipped out the money and loaned it to me." Not letting his male pride get in the way, he accepted her generous offer. "I am almost finished paying her back," he continued, "but she wouldn't have cared if it had taken longer than this. There are times when I've done the same sort of thing for Beverlee. This comment about money doesn't mean anything more than to show you that there is mutual respect and integrity in our relationship."

Since "Another World" has gone to an hour, their during-the-week dates are less frequent. "I leave my apartment about 6:30 A.M. on the days I am working, "Beverlee related, "And I practically drag myself in about 7 P.M. We have no commissary out at the NBC studio in Brooklyn where we tape, so eating lunch is a rarity...since we don't have an official lunch break. It is the greatest treat in the world to find that Berkeley and Scott have gotten together and fixed dinner for me. On this soap, I work a three day week...and figuring that I have to work on such a heavy script, sometimes 40 pages, I'm really exhausted and not the best dinner company." "However," Berkeley piped up, as we parked ourselves on a bench, "She is the one and only person I know who can learn those 40 pages in one hour. And she also whips up this fantastic high protein drink which seems to give her boundless energy. We, Beverlee and I, also go to exercise class twice a week and find that that too gives us both a huge amount of energy...it just seems to stimulate the blood and make the muscles work."

"Since I have such a heavy schedule," Beverlee went on, giving Berkeley's hand a loving squeeze, "it's a real break when Berkeley convinces me that we should go out to the theatre and to dinner. We rarely go away on weekends but sometimes he rents a car and the three of us, Berkeley, Scott and I take long drives up to the country."

Beverlee says that she spends a great deal of time on the weekends by herself. "I like to sleep a lot and get ready for the onslaught of the week by doing myself a favor and resting a lot." Berkeley jogs and visits with Scott."

Out of work since "How to Survivor a Marriage" was cancelled, Berkeley told me that he is really dying to do another soap.

"When I heard that my friend Paul Mayer was casting a new soap opera for ABC, 'Ryan's Hope,' I quickly called and asked to read for a part. I did so but then was informed that I just wasn't right for the part he had in mind, but I'll keep plodding ahead. I have given up the stardom dream. I simply want to pay for my life insurance, and my son's support in California. I've tried to hook up with a dinner theater to do something like 'Owl and the Pussycat' with Tricia O'Neil, she played my wife on 'How to Survive,' but it was just a little too late in the season. At the moment, I am starring in an off-Broadway showcase. We don't get paid for it, but an actor can't let his wheels get rusty, and am busy reading the trades and getting a new agent for commercials. I've sent out pictures and resumes to every soap opera producer...and with Beverlee's help in building up my faith and keeping my spirits high, I know something will come along very soon." They exchanged smiles.

"But if things don't work out," he jested, "I can always join Scott McKinsey and get a job at the nearby Chicken Delight store."

"Or," teased Beverlee, giving him a playful hug, "you can become the best darned house painter this side of Chicago."

If there is a lesson to be learned from the Harris-McKinsey love story it is that with love and sharing, the riches of the world can be yours.

Wow. That was really nice. And the portions with Berkeley were really special because there's a glimpse of the actor's life that you really don't read about in your average soap star interview. Kind of heartbreaking, the part about giving up the stardom dream, just wanting to pay for life insurance and take care of his son. He really provides a voice for the reality of many NY theatre actors. On a lighter note, Scott at Chicken Delight, ha! For a second there, I thought Joyce was going to end every paragraph with, "They are a perfect pair." Speaking of Joyce, it's funny to glance at the pics without reading the captions, I was like, "Who is this random pregnant woman in the park whose belly he's rubbing?? " and at a cursory glance, I thought Bevvie's fingers were in his mouth in that one pic. Risque.

They seemed to have had such a lovely life though. I'm sorry that they lost him so soon. They would of course go on to be even more financially blessed as he speaks about, they eventually had a home in the counry that they enjoyed diving up to for weekends. Does anyone know how long BM stayed in NY before moving out to CA after she retired? I hope she had plenty of friends and was never lonely.

I can't imagine how much tougher it is for NY actors now.

I thought the pregnant woman was a fan or something, I didn't realize she was the author until I knew they had the same first name.

You usually hear people in showbiz talk about how much they love each other but you can really feel it in this article, how much they cared about each other and how she kept him going. He loved her so much that he was willing to share these very private thoughts, such as how she's what keeps him from losing all self-esteem, or that she helped him pay for dental work.

Some of these oh-so-sensitive articles from the 70s seem paper-thin but this one seemed very genuine to me. Which is how Beverlee always seemed.

That's one of those weird parts of life though -- they're both gone yet they seem so alive when you are reading this. You almost feel like you're there.

Berkeley had a short stint on AW in 80 as the corrupt cop friend of Larry and also had a stint on OLTL I think.

Does anyone know about beverlee's first husband(Scott's father)

In a SOW interview when she did the GH stint,Bev seemed very happy with life in LA.She saisd she managed to fill in her days, not with anything major, but just enjoying a normal existence. She obviously saved her money and enjoyed the freedom of not being tied to the daily obligation of soap work.

What year did Berkeley die?

He died in 1984.

I didn't know he was in The Groove Tube.

One article just refers to her ex as a successful businessman and says they divorced when their son was 3.

Beverlee's first husband and Scott's father was Mark McKinsey. In the 1960's, Beverlee was married to actor Angus Duncan. Duncan appeared in the first episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show as the man who jilted Mary, causing her to move to Minneapolis. Trivia: Duncan was the first choice to play the Ted Baxter role, as the creators envisioned Ted as a young man. Berkeley died in September 1984. It was his death that resulted in Beverlee being replaced as Alexandra Spaulding on Guiding Light by Lydia Bruce. Coincidentally, Beverlee and Lydia died within five days of one another.

Also, for those who are not aware, the son referred to in this article was the child Berkeley had with Susan Harris, who later created the sitcoms Soap and The Golden Girls.

I didn't know she was married to that actor. That's fascinating. Beverlee had so many ties to the sitcom world, it's a shame she never had a big role on one.

How did Lydia do as Alex? I didn't know she had played that role.

  • Member

I'd read that about Lydia Bruce, didn't realize it was Berkeley's passing that prompted the recasting. Carl you are so right, they seem so alive and still with us reading that article, you do feel like you're right there.

In the replacements thread it says that Susan Harris threw around the idea of Beverlee for either Mary or Jessica (I vote Jessica, just as I would vote Myrna for Capitol... everybody wanted Bevvie!) for Soap. What I think is so cool about that is the inference that she and Susan and Berkeley had a great relationship which we don't always see in such situations. That's just nice to know. I mean, I could be wrong, but I'm assuming here.

And if the rest of you haven't already, you must visit beverleemckinsey.com and read those great articles.

I do wonder if Beverlee could have played "dumb", the way Kathryn could.

I can see her a little more easily as Mary, although I LOVED Cathryn Diamond, she was so underrated. I loved that alcoholism story so much, even if it only lasted for a few episodes.

TC did you like Clarice later on?

I didn't know that episode from the earlier years was on Youtube. Wyndham was playing Rachel by that time? I'd love to see that. I always thought that one of the reasons the Rachel/Alice rivalry worked was that Robin Strasser was more delicate, yet Rachel was hard, while Jacquie Courtney was butch, yet Alice was sweet.

I don't know that I ever disliked Clarice. I rolled my eyes at her, but she was simple and honest. I was probably too young to appreciate the purpose of a character like her.

He was also on Texas playing a drunken TV talk show host. I remember reading an interview with Beverlee, where she gushed about how much fun it was, and that he was playing a talk show host like Tom Snyder, only sleazier. My jaw dropped.

I keep meaning to start up again before they're taken down.

I was wondering if you or anyone else would be interested in any of the stuff when Ellen Wheeler and Tom Eplin were together in real life; they were interviewed and on the cover, in 1986. I didn't know if someone might feel that was too much about their personal lives and are only interested in the characters.

If there are any actors you're interested in let me know and I'll try to find something.

I was going to ask you, were there any AW actors you wished had been on Santa Barbara, or vice/versa?

How many actors did the shows share anyway? It doesn't seem like that many.
