OLTL — BethAnn Bonner should have been a recast Natalie

Talia was possibly one of thee most boring characters OLTL ever created, but Beth Ann Bonner is a great actress, who was just hindered by a useless role. I think she would have made a MUCH better Natalie than Melissa Archer does. I mean, yes, Natalie (despite who plays her) is still going to be hindered by awful character direction, idiotic actions, and destruction of established history...but I could see her giving the role better nuances to make it a bit more tolerable, despite it all. I could see BAB better interacting with ES and JvD. Hell, as much as I opposed John/Natalie, I may have been willing to give them a chance with her in the role. A shame.

Hmm... It's kind of an out-of-left-field idea there. I liked BethAnn Bonner well enough. I actually thought she really LOOKED like Carlo Hesser's daughter. But I don't think she would have worked as a Natalie recast.

Connie Fletcher (ex-Erin Lavery, AMC) was initially a Natalie recast front-runner back when Melissa Archer and TPTB were in a contract snit. (Remember when Natalie was kidnapped and kept off-screen for several weeks?) Of course, they eventually came to terms and Fletcher quickly landed on AMC.

IMO Natalie stinks, period. MA's amaturish acting makes it worse, but I don't think on paper Natalie is that much better. BAB wouldn't have been able to save the role. The Natalie role was just a mistake from day 1. She clutters up and convolutes the Lord/Buchanan family dynamic, and just doesn't fit in. Plus they don't know which direction to take with her. One minute she's a conniving street rogue, the next she's a wounded woman-child with abandonment issues, then she's a cartoonish herione. I wouldn't wish Natalie on any good actress. BAB has too much of a alpha-female aura. I think she'd get lost in the muck of Natalie and would probably wind up going on autopilot.

Well I'm a big'ol "Team Jessica" player - so I won't disupte you too much there.

But the truth? I'd kind of miss Natalie if she were altogether gone because she gives Jessica someone to rival. I get excited whenever poor Natalie starts to feel like people prefer Jessica over her. Kind of the same way I felt about Jan Brady's feelings toward Marcia...

Bonner is too good of an actress to play a buffoon like Natalie.

I think Talia would have been fine if they

a ) Hadn't made her a cop.

Cop characters (especially female cops) on soaps are so dry and rigid.

b ) Hadn't stuck her with Antonio.

They stopped caring about Antonio 3 years ago. A new role like Talia paired with him was bound to be sabatoge for her.

c ) Hadn't made her Carlo Hesser's daughter.

His only making cameo appearances every few years made her being his daughter rather pointless.

d ) Hadn't made her core scene partners Fish, Sarah, Antonio, Cristian and Layla.

When everyone you hang out with are day players/backburner characters who do a whole bunch of nothin', how long is gonna be before you're sucked into that trap too?

Talia should have come on as a business woman, or maybe an assistant to Viki or Todd at one of the newspapers, or a dubious intern at Llanview Hospital. I'm almost tempted say she should have played Gigi, but her having to play the love interest of ambigously gay Rex probably would have been a disaster.

So I don't know.

It's the latter.

To me, that's right up there w/ Erica's line to Adam - "You made your bed, now writhe in it." - as one of the classic AMC retorts. (God, how I miss those days.)

The Talia character would have worked had the network the gumption to stick with the original concept of a female Middle Eastern cop with 9/11 ties as counterpoint to Tate and the OPP. Instead they dithered and dithered, finally throwing in a few lines about her fiance who died in the attacks and promptly backburnering her as Antonio's consolation prize for losing Jessica. A waste all around, mostly because ABC chickened out.

Oh my. I always thought CF was rather dull on AMC. Can't see her playing feisty Natalie. At least TPTB intended to keep her a redhead

I don't have anything against BAB, but I can't see her play Natalie. MA is perfectly fine in the role.

    • All the time they spent trying to make viewers feel sorry for Chad only for him to not even last that long. I wonder if they knew Richard Burgi was going so quickly. You're right about Josie replacing Cheryl. On paper, this should have made sense, given all the ties Josie had to the canvas, but I did prefer Cheryl. There was something very synthetic about Alexandra Wilson.  I suppose even if she did have some fans they were just so used to getting rid of people left and right, so she was more collateral damage. As you said above I do wonder what the plans were for Peggy Lazarus. I think AWHP mentioned her once telling Peter that Peggy Lazarus wasn't her real name. Maybe she would have been another Carl moll... Rebecca Hollen never did get her due in her soap roles.
    • So true...Hackney might have had a story on FC with Richard being an old lover of his, but reveals herself to be a Cartel member and blackmails Richard with something into doing her dirty work  LOL. But of course Richard had his hands full with the double trouble sisters Ms. Jones and Ms. Braxton that season.

    • Cat herself will be a stumbling block all her own as she vowed to Chad to stay away from him, thus redeeming her of her crime morally. Classic DAYS would have them gazing longingly at each other at Doug's Place or Blondie's, while Liz is serenading the room with a song aptly chosen to represent their feelings of emotional turmoil.
    • From what I just recently watched, they were setting her up to go into future stories. She was Emmy nomination worthy in the material I saw. If some viewers did not like her, the character could have been rehabilitated after that sick storyline. It feels like they destroyed a character for fun and then tossed her to the curb. Spencer had chemistry with everyone. I'm just retroactively angry on Spencer's behalf.  You're right about how Cheryl was often forgotten and pushed aside and I would take Cheryl over Josie. I think soaps need characters like Cheryl. Characters like Josie are way too common. Josie always got on my nerves.
    • CBS was back in third place in 1994/95. That was the season CBS lost NFL broadcasting rights which also cost them several established affiliates in major media markets. 1995 CBS was sold to Westinghouse and Les Moonves arrived. 1995/96 CBS was trying to be young and cool to compete with NBC and Fox, but it was an epic failure and CBS was once again in third place.
    • I tend to think that Chad will actually listen to Jen (this time). And that will be the next stumbling block in their relationship, which will open the possibilities for Cat to seek another member of their love triangle... To iterate my earlier thought, I am also not a fan of the person Melissa Reeves, but the character of Jennifer looks so chic this week, especially in comparison to Hope (and Gabi).  That blunt haircut is a winner.
    • I think Cheryl was essentially replaced by Josie, and it seems likely that Lemay wanted to bring the Frames back into the picture and for a variety of reasons that it would be McKinnons who would make way for them. Cheryl didn't really get many layers -- she was pretty and kind and sweet and faded into the background so that Scott could participate in the AIDS storyline with Dawn. Looking at the AWHP, other than (not very) shockingly being in love with her mother's adopted son Scott, Cheryl apparently went out with Sam and flirted with much-too-old-for-her John Hudson and MJ's ex-boyfriend/pimp Chad. I know MJ told Mary that she had been a prostitute, but did she tell Cheryl and did she tell anyone about Chad's pimping?
    • I feel the same way about Melissa Reeves' Jennifer. She just makes the show feel like home by her presence alone. I am perfectly okay with them coming in every once and awhile, which probably fits Reeves' schedule better anyway. Their connections to Salem are still there: JJ, the grandkids, Jack still owning half of The Spectator ... they're perfect recurring characters. All this talk of Jennifer being in the wrong regarding Cat is absurd. Jennifer is not being villainized in any way, shape, or form, she's just being allowed to actually be human, which adds odds to the obstacle of Chad and Cat eventually getting together. All inner conflict. Keep it coming!
    • Hahaha. Jean Hackney, Angelica Nero, and the Falcon Crest henchwomen were all straight out of a James Bond movie.
    • My hunch is what you've described. JFP is likely back working on transitioning the show to a new studio and embracing new technology for its production model.
