Members DaytimeFan
B&B...the only person who isn't rich is Owen. Yes, Marcus isn't rich in his own right...but Momma Donna and Step Daddy Honey Bear Eric are hardly slumming it in Beverly Hills. Every single other character is rich. Just the way I like it. Members alwaysAMC
AMC: Erica Adam/JR/Colby Palmer/Petey/Opal Zach/Kendall Jackson (DA/lawyer) David (top cardiologist) Greenlee/Ryan Tad (PI/TV host) Martins Amanda (thanks to her millions in scheming) Krystal (bc she's either with Adam, David, Tad) Angie/Jesse/Frankie (top doctors/police chief) The only characters not that rich in my eyes: Taylor, Brot, Randi, Annie, and Aiden. Members SFK
DT, I love my filthy rich Dynasty-esque shows too, but do you mean for soaps in general or just B&B? I think it works very well for B&B, it's like an '80s primetime soap mated with a telenovela, but for instance, I wouldn't want AMC to be like that. Members DaytimeFan
I mean for B&B specifically. Well, Y&R too. I would HATE if Y&R became a soap about social struggle. Ugh. Both of those shows are about characters, not issues. And Thank God For That! DAYS is another show that, thankfully, doesn't even take work into consideration, it's just a matter of fun amongst the chaos (whatever anyone thinks of DAYS, it can be a helluva lotta fun) But I totally agree about AMC, that show was great because it's cast was a community of varying social ranks. Erica Kane didn't start out rich after all, although she knew she was a star...GH even had its share of 'normal' people. Doctors weren't rich, they were well off. The nurses lived comfortably, but it wasn't 'Dallas'...now both of these shows have abandoned that and it's a mess.
Members marceline
It's fascinating to see the different ideas of what consitutes "rich" and "middle class" in this thread.
Members Y&RWorldTurner
The focus on pretty much all the soaps is on wealthy characters. Has there ever been a soap that was successful and focued on middle class or poor people? Ryan's Hope is the only one that immediately comes to my mind. Members All My Shadows
Same here. Being a doctor doesn't automatically make someone rich in my eyes. Well off? Yeah, deffo. But well off doesn't always mean rich, IMO.
Members AMCHistory
Don't forget Tad has all the Orsini money, Nola left it to Tad and not Ted. I think Joe and his clan is upper-middle class, but not wealthy. I doubt Joe is as wealthy as David seeing how David is a specialist, and Joe has never worked in private practice. I don't know how Ryan has any money now. Didn't he sign everything from Cambias to Miranda? The Hubbards cannot be well off. At one point they had like 20 people living in a single apartment unit! Haha. Are we also supposed to think that the set is not Jack's/Josh's apartment? The Chandlers, Cortlandts, Tylers, and Erica, 'nuff said. Was Jack ever re-accepted by the South Carolina Montgomerys? Maybe that explains how he was able to spend so much time in public service.
Members Eric200
If I was the HW of AMC I would do a storyline where Ryan is kicked out of his home because he is so obsessed with his romantic life he forgot that he needs a job so he can pay his rent. Members Paul Raven
When Y&R debuted, the Fosters were represented as poor, working class.Mom Foster worked in a factory and Jill had to work 2 jobs to support Snapper and Greg through college. However, they soon moved on up with the brothers becoming a doctor and lawyer and Jill hooking up with Phillip. Jill didn't truly come into money until she married John Abbott. Liz married wealthy Stuart Brooks, but she felt she didn't fit in to his upper middle class lifestyle. Greg and Snapper also remained true to their roots-not becoming wealthy.Greg worked at legal aid and Snapper's job at the hospital was not a big earner. Members marceline
I agree. Angie was probably doing alright when she was an infectious disease specialist but now she's one of Pine Valley's generic docs and Jesse may be chief but he's still a civil servant. Members Southofnowhere
AMC's Reese isn't Rich. GH has alot of non "Rich" characters.
Members Southofnowhere
Bianca is SUPER Rich and Miranda is even richer. Bianca is one of few character's who seem to enjoy being rich. She travels all around the world , does Chartiy work and other than her seat on the Cambias board she has lots of time to raise her kids.
Members AMCHistory
I don't think i agree with you about Reese. Her father sounds like a successful architect with his own firm. My dad is in the same vein and I would like to think we are upper middle class at least. Also, if you want to work abroad as Reese does, you have to be especially talented, especially in Europe, especially in Paris... prbly one of the world's most beautiful cities. I think it is okay for AMC and OLTL to be "ritzy" b/c they are supposed to be cities on the Main Line. Main Line poor is everywhere else's middle class. I also think Y&R has a strong wealthy population. No one just "works." Everyone is a board member, or in the C-Suite if not a Senior Exec. Which is funny b/c Genoa City is in [!@#$%^&*] Wisconsin, not NYC or Chicago. DAYS suffers from this syndrome too. Guiding Light, for all we bag on it, seems to have a distribution of wealth. The Spauldings are enormously wealthy. The Lewis, I see them as upper middle class (they have a construction company that has been cut apart how many different ways?), the Coopers have a thing for being civil servants, and the supporting players all seem to have normal jobs or go to school. Unlike on AMC where Hayley owned a bar, but was also on the BOD of Enchantment, hosted a talk show, and received some money from dear 'ole Daddy... Buzz runs a restaurant. That is all. I really like that.
Members Jonathan
Well, even Beverly Hills has its slums so I'd like to see how the poor live in Pine Valley.
