Here are various versions of ATWT on and on. I particulary like 1986 and 1988 version of ATWT on and on. The first one is the 1986 theme. object width="425" height="355"> Here is 1984 theme Here is the 1988 theme Here is the 1990 theme

Talk about typecasting! Malachy McCourt played a bartender on RYAN'S HOPE and ATWT.

Thanks, Soapsuds. I think I actually prefer the original, synthesizer-heavy variation of "As the World Turns On and On". It sounds...funkier to me, you know, lol?

Hey, it was the 80s. Nothing made sense. :P Shoulder pads, anyone? :o

Actually, I did like the song. It was catchy, plus I liked seeing the characters in front of the tour of Llanview. And I miss seeing some of those actors, especially Clint Ritchie.

I really liked EON's theme also. They jazzed it up a little in the last couple of years but it was still basically the same. It just went so well with the mystery theme of that show.

I completely agree with this assessment.

One Life to Live: 1980-1984

GAH! Favorite OLTL opening ever! The music just fits so perfectly...the harmonica during the sunrise, the flutes during the birds, the full orchestra during the clouds....LOVE IT. LOVE IT. LOVE IT.

1) One Life To Live 80's Peabo Bryson Theme. There has never been a better opening in terms of catchiness- ever.

(I actually think OLTL's openings have ALL SUCKED since then- even Linda Gottlieb's Tampax Commercial version- although the theme song itself was classy.

And I think OLTL's current opening is cheesy, cheap, and boring- weak-weak-weak.

2) Y&R- Especially with the pencil drawings- Classy, Classy, Elegant, timeless....

3) OLTL's early 80's Sun/Seagulls theme- I like it because it was done on movie film and I also like the way the music builds to a really pretty crescendo- Its very soapy and pretty.

4) AMC's Simple Book Opening- Love that one.

5)B&B's Original Theme- Loved it

I am really not a fan of any themes of the other soaps- and I am really surprised that people like ATWT's 80's openings- I thought it liked it looked and sounded cheap. And the song is not in the least bit moving/pretty/involving. And it never matched Doug Marland's excellent show. At all. ick.

Shoot- I forgot one- Guiding Light's from the mid nineties? That lighthouse light spinning and then the actors in various scenes in the spinning lighthouse light- Great and effective song and really pretty images. Again- Classy and fit the show.

ALL of the soaps openings now, with the exception of Y&R and DOOL which are classics- and ATWT's current one isn't bad-

ARE CHEAP AND TERRIBLE. ABC's are the absolute worst. AMC being the best of the lot. OLTL's look like some tacky commercial. It is so completely tacky.

OKAY I am over it now. Did I mention how crappy B&B's is?

This is a closing theme rather than an opening but it's another all-time fave of mine. IIRC, the opening was that went with it was an extremely short snippet of it.

Loving 1984

    • Yes, the Liz and Lucky scenes were horrible. Kristina better be sent to prison.   I'm already getting tired of BLQ continuing to blame Lois for her mistakes. Yes, let's move this along.
    • Oh I agree that they erred in not showing her bonding more with her family and not having this examined more closely. I think if I cared about Lucky or Laura I'd be more agitated. I think the material they have given her (aside from chasing after Charlotte, which was hurt by not focusing more on Rocco's response and just by Charlotte never having a reason to exist) has been OK but certainly not what it could have been.
    • I have never been much of a Lulu fan either since the JMB days.  I do think Alexa Havins is really a great recast.  When Lulu returned it was at the expense of Sam (no loss to me) but not the best for audience favor, she was barely on screen for weeks after she woke up, then went to run off and put everyone in danger to find Charlotte at the expense of her other child, and finally moved on to this Brook/Dante baby investigation.  Lulu never had a chance to grieve the years she lost, re-bond with her family or her friends, re-integrate herself back into town, or be anything more than a chaos creator. Meanwhile, Brook Lynn is this poor, innocent victim that's being bullied by Lulu.  I don't think Lulu is right.  I would just like a little more subtlety in the writing.
    • Just beautifully done. I could name some minor quibbles, but I won't, because what DAYS gave us today was golden. That was soap opera at its finest, paying homage to history and legacy and actors and the audience. This is why we love soaps.
    • To clarify, we could argue about the necessity to have John Black speak while in hospital, but the body created an opportunity for people to touch him, and move around him.  Even though I never totally suspended my disbelief, I appreciated their creative choice to form a visual representation of loss.  Certainly there were other ways to tell this story, but it will stay with me because those production choices enabled these performances. However, with disdain, I note that Days has found an odd middle ground between a flashback and a montage.  I define a flashback as least a couple of rounds of dialogue, if not a whole scene.  And a montage would be a visual snippet without much dialogue.  But, these were often just a single line, or an entrance.  It felt like a bit of a tease, and made me wish that Peacock had curated a playlist of John Black's Greatest Hits, like they do for some Bravo shows or SNL characters.  OT - but they have yet to maximize that platform.
    • It's tough for me because I feel like this has always been Lulu. She used to be even worse, slut-shaming, verbally abusing other women, and always being written as being in the right. They should let Brook Lynn get dirtier, but I think the material of Lulu digging and being self-righteous, making everything worse even while not intending to do so, but also not being as in the wrong as Dante thinks she is, all makes sense for her. But I don't have as much experience with Lulu as a lot of fans as I just could never stomach her beyond the time she was a mute kid, so I don't have much right to speak.
    • Thanks @JAS0N47 for all the ratings!   All My Children hits Number 1 in the ratings for the first time in its history during the week of 8/20/73-8/20/73!
    • I think the writing is slanted against Lulu.  I don't think there is an issue with the character in general.  I just think Lulu comes doesn't get many layers or nuance in her writing.  Lulu becomes obnoxious and a bully to Brook Lynn and both characters SHOULD have flaws.
    • Totally here for Anita dumping Sharon in the past for first Dante Green, and then Vernon...
