INDUSTRY 411: Soaps are almost a billion-dollar industry

Wanna know how much cashola advertisers spend on soap operas? In 2007, they spent about $870.6 million, according to TNS Media Intelligence. How does that compare to previous years? In 2003, advertisers spent about $967.9 million on the same serials.

The report claims Y&R did not lose any money from 2006, but Days of Our Lives, Sony’s other soap property, dropped dramatically in revenue from $97.5 million in 2007 from nearly $130 million in 2003! Poor Deidre Hall (Marlena, Days)!

Startling? I don't think so...

$67.5 million decline in ad revenue over a 4 year period when other soaps haven't lost as much is pretty startling, if you ask me.

Not if you see the way DOOL is managed. Mismanagement = loss. Plain and simple.

With 9 soaps until recently, this means that the average soap earned about $100 million in ad revenue.

Sounds great, eh?

But that is less that $2 million/week.

And these shows COST more than $2 million/week to make, right?

That explains why we're in doom-and-gloom days. Or is my thinking wrong somehow?

Y&R costs 1.25 million a week. So if Y&R earns the average (which it wouldn't since it's at the top of the ratings and does well in the demos) it easily clears a 750,000 a week profit. That's 39 million dollars in profit a year.

Yes, it's wild. I find it delicious revenge that Days is still paying JER to this day! hehehe :)

Can someone explain that to me? why is DAYS still paying JER?

Apparently JER had an iron clad multi-year contract with DAYS and he was fired before it expired. So, Corday has to pay him off the remainder of his contract.
