Ira Avery's stint on the show was an unmitigated disaster. The only good things under his watch were the introduction of Greta (as played by Eileen Kearney) and the story she plays out, and also introducing Richard Niles as Rico Bellini (Nick's nephew) in 1970. His story would eventually tie in with Greta's, with Julie Forrest (Ginger Gerlach) being the common denominator. By that point, Stanley Silverman had come in as co-HW - so who knows who had the better story ideas by then.

This was Ira Avery alone, after he and his wife were no longer writing together. (I don't know exactly when they divorced, but perhaps that was part of the issue especially due to how Avery handled the end of Nick and Althea's marriage.)

Not only did he ruin the Bellini marriage, but he eviscerated both characters individually (this was when Virginia Vestoff was on). I think they had divorced fairly recently when he took the TD gig in late 1969. They had stepped down from Love is a Many Splendored Thing in 1968, when Jane Avery refused to continue to work with him. Apparently theirs was NOT an amicable split. Per imdb, TD was Ira Avery's swan song to TV. He passed on in 1992.

James Shannon had various bit roles on DS.

His acting as Paul is...hilarious, but when he briefly took off his shades after being nicked by a car he looked hot as hell. Really hot. I'm surprised he didn't get bigger work. But his look is a bit closer to men who hit it big in more recent years than in that era.

Marta Heflin does such an excellent job as Shana, making a plot device character oddly sympathetic. I had never seen her work before, other than her thankless role in Come Back to the 5 and Dime. I guess she was more of a theater actress.

Marta Heflin was indeed excellent, and they should have kept her on. To my knowledge, TD was her only soap role. Marta was the niece of Oscar-winning actor Van Heflin and AMC actress Frances Heflin (her father was their brother, Martin Heflin).

She was in two other Robert Altman films before Jimmy Dean (like Cher and Sandy Dennis, she originated her movie role in the Broadway play) - A Wedding (which also featured Virginia Vestoff) and A Perfect Couple. Other major films she appeared in were A Star is Born and Scorsese's King of Comedy.

Like you said, it seems that her big love was the stage. She frequently appeared on and off-Broadway, as well as being a cabaret singer in NYC.

@saynotoursoap wrote about this in detail 4-5 years ago I think, but he basically left in 1974 or 1975 and returned for two guest stints. I think the last was in 1975 or 1976, not too long before his role on GH. It's a shame he couldn't be back at the end, although he may have been back on GH at that point anyway.

In today's reruns, we saw the debut of Dr. Winston Croft. The performer who originated the role was Philip Sterling, who is one of those character actors whose face you see everywhere in classic TV reruns. He was in six episodes of Barney Miller alone - and that show was notorious for using the same guest actors over and over again (in a good way).

I saw his debut too. Mona makes me sick the way she was running Carolee down to him and Steve. Steve is a brain dead moron who is treating Carolee like crap. I laughed when she put him in his place at the hospital about his cocktails with Mona and her having to cookout with Billy alone. Ann seems nice at this point, but I know she will take a turn for the worse.

    • I don't expect Lois to be the same person she was 25 years ago, but she's definitely lost a lot of what made Lois unique.  It's clear the show doesn't know how to write for her, and the sole purpose of Lois is to hide this Gio secret.  It's a shame she doesn't interact with more of the canvas.  It's a waste of Rena's talents. I like Brook Kerr most of the time.  She can be hit or miss.  I totally get what you are saying about her line readings too.  I honestly think the character really suffers being stuck in the Curtis pairing.  She's much better than Tanisha Harper's Jordan lol.
    • Friday and yesterday's episode is what daytime television should be. The other shows airing could take a page from yesterday's show.  I loved the rage, hurt and anger Nicole unleashed on Ted.  Daphnee should be up for an Emmy nom for these scenes.  It broke my heart to see how Dana had locked Eva out.  I do feel sorry for Eva.    I am still bumfuzzled as to why Leslie/Dana went to the DuPree's and asked them to accept Kat UNLESS Eva is really Kat's twin (and really Nicole and Ted's daughter that maybe they though they lost or an embryo Dana/Leslie stole??) I loved how Anita and Vernon both shot her down.    Ohhh and let me just say Friday and yesterday was the MOST fire I have seen Martin have since the show started.  Maybe Brandon Clayborn is coming into his own with the role finally.
    • You've been seeing him all along. You just didn't know it was him, I guess.

    • Where to for Dana? She's pissed off the Duprees (most of the cast), alienated her daughter and will she be welcomed by the Have Nots at the diner? Maybe she can befriend Ashley and Derek and liven up their story.
    • Melissa Ordway announced she was moved to recurring back in November but is still credited with the contract cast members.
    • I think of Evan as a smarmy bast*rd. Maybe you'll like that description. You certainly have him pegged correctly since he is just a soldier following "Admiral" Iris's marching orders.
    • So far the only interest I've seen from Evan to Amanda has been listening to Iris's orders to go and seduce her.  So far he hasn't been successful... but who knows. Amanda is unbearable at times. Entitled, spoiled... idiotic. Iris... so blatantly manipulating her and Amanda takes the bait. But I guess... when she gets in trouble... she'll have a chance to learn. That's what makes these shows so interesting.    Oh, no, don't worry. You haven't ruined a thing. Evan has not been on my radar that much... he was not one of the characters I was caring particularly... so nothing much has been changed for me. I don't think he has the stuff to ruin Rachel's life. He's just a pretty guy that can follow orders. Iris on the other hand... is dangerous.

P.S Maybe Evan will surprise me. Who knows.
    • The show has gone back to 10/10 entertainment! I'm glad that I was right in feeling that what were experiencing were growing pains. I'm sure they are not over yet, but I'll know that we always comeback to quality drama. I think it's going to be a hell of ride (in a good way) from this moment on. BTG has that magic that not a lot of shows have. I'll update more... when I'm done catching up.
    • So very glad to hear this. Yesterday I suddenly thought; OMG, what about spoilers, have I just  ruined things for Maxim in getting carried away with interest in Evan, who was so well-written & well-acted. BTW, your fan review of this episode was a sight for eyes that had not seen one of these for a little bit too long, LOL!!!  Mitch is also fascinating to me but in his case it's because he was all in with Janice & her nefarious plan & then he did this turnabout we've mentioned & he basically got off scot-free.
