Y&R: Week of July 07, 2008

It's time for Nick to cheat on Phyllis, so that horribly boring and character-dragging marriage can come to an end. It would do wonders for Phyllis, as I can see her reverting back to her old ways with an event like that, and it can give some zest to the Nick character.

Phyllis and Nick represent everything wrong with Y&R - horribly mismatched couples. They had chemistry during the affair, but that all ended when they became a legitimate couple, things should've never been that way.

One thing I hate about Maria Arena Bell's writing is that she seems to want every couple (no matter how mismatched they) happy and the fights some might have are so contrived and nonsensical. It seems like every couple has to get married or engaged under her writing too.

Nick can cheat on Phyllis with some dumb younger bimbo for all I care.

It was an affair that brought them together, it should be an affair that breaks Nick and Phyllis up.

Phyllis is so much more interesting and better when she's the bitchy outsider that no one accepts or trusts. With Nick, she's become the happy homemaker who is apart of the establishment. Phyllis is too strong and dynamic for a calm character like Nick.

So, I like Phick, but I agree they need to be threatened.

In fact, I think you gave me the clue here....Nick needs to cheat with Amber. That would be consistent with his history with Grace (another blonde sexpot)...and it would play nicely given the growing rivalry between Amber and Phyllis.

But, honestly, I'd rather Nick didn't cheat. I really want him and Phyllis to have active storylines that are true to their characters (e.g., Phyllis being evil to protect her turf), but at the end of the day, they come home to each other--speak the truth--and love. Nick and Phyllis for me should follow the template of Augusta and Lionel Lockridge on SB (when they were well written by the Dobsons): They may fight but the love/passion/honestly is always there.

I should explain that Nick and Phyllis are among my all time favorite couples EVER on any soap. Yeah...more than all the classics you can name :).

Only when Phyllis discovers the affair, she needs to be in a position of power. Like having Nick's stake in Restless Style in her name or something. Or, better yet, she dumps RS for a high-powered job at Jabot or Newman.

The scenes of antagonism between Jack and Nick are good from a story arc POV. However, I felt Jack was being demonized all around yesterday. He looked sly in every conversation he had, and that goes against the fatherly feelings he has for Nick. I also wondered whether this is set up to have Nick go running back to his "real" daddy and a job at Newman all over again. Given that the Adam/Victoria "rivalry" (when Amelia Heinle bothered to look awake) fizzled so quickly, perhaps Y&R will go the Adam vs. Nick route.

And seeing Cane, Chloe and Nick discussing business just made me realize how much the first two need to be interacting with their own age group/professional bracket. The dorm SL featuring Lily, NuNuColleen and Devon's bitchface is too childish for them. Cane's tight, nip-flashing shirt demands better SLs, too!

LOL, we all have our guilty pleasures. Given GH's amazing history of supercouples like Luke & Laura and Frisco & Felicia, I've still got stars in my eyes regarding Tamara Braun and Ted King's CarLo (probably GH's mobliest almost-couple).

OK, now that is a GREAT idea. She'll probably go on the premise of "never trust a cheater" which will further divide Phick.

I'd like Phyllis's dialogue gone -- or at least revamped. The snarky, insincere valley-speak. I know it's "naturalistic," but everytime Phyllis says "Uh huh, yah. So great" and gives Sharon or Amber her fake, overly bright smile, for some reason I just want to slap the red out of her. And I'm not even a Sharon or Amber fan.

Other than that, I like Phyllis. Bitchy Phyllis.

I'd rather MAB truly use her creative talents, and come up with something exciting for the pair to play out. I liked the "internal conflict" idea suggested by JackPeyton, that would have worked well if Lesli Kay had stayed around longer.

That's like a Bell soap signature it seems.

Honestly, I think the only point of this is to validate Victor's "I told you so". He WARNED Nick what was going to happen.

Excellent point on Heinle-awakeness. I noticed yesterday that Eyal Podell acted HUNG OVER (as he should) in the post-coital scene. He carried that through to his Sabrina scene (wincing at the sun). Also, when he saw Victoria, there was a familiarity and happiness--as befits their survival ordeal together at Clear Springs.

In contrast, Amber never seemed hung over...not for a minute. And Victoria was dour (I realize she is mad at Sabrina) and never once played that shared history with Adrian. She is not a good actress.

I think she is weaker than usual, and the closeups on the Crimson Lights patio helped explain it. The circles under her eyes were DEEP. That new mama is experiencing SERIOUS sleep deprivation, I think.

JP, you are excellent! Yes, of course, the way you propose it would be the very best.

And real Amber.

    • While I do love the chaotic energy that is Kat vs Lesile, it is a bit extra. Sheltered, virginal Kat who plays it safe from her man to her wardrobe understands that Leslie is dangerous, but she's out here showing up everywhere and anywhere that Lesile is to be found and actively going to places where she is alone? I mean Kat doesn't even act a little afraid or intimidated by Leslie. Meanwhile, big Ole Derek out here begging for his and Ashley's life to Jacob.  As for Dani, I didn't see it that way. Dani and Bill were together for 30 years and shared a family. I believe there was real love there at one point. Bill is still an ass and Dani is still crazy, but realizing she may lose him and her daughter's may lose their dad definitely struck a chord.
    • Funny I randomly saw Kami’s lengthy post about the 44th anniversary of the Walton’s finale last week pop up in my news feed on Facebook. A few inaccuracies to her post but overall it was pretty insightful and interesting to read.
    • Well, depending on rewrites...Jennifer Richards potentially slept with Brandon and Alan. It does feel like we're forgetting someone, but then again, maybe I'm confusing that with brothers, which would include a lot more.
    • Maybe it’s me, and the fact that RC isn’t at the helm, but since Cwikly and Ford have taken over I’ve noticed the show doing a lot of things differently directing wise, and since the storyline of John’s demise began, the show has been using different scores, and dare I say better ones than this time last year. It’s interesting and I wonder if the any of it is Noel Maxam’s influence before being promoted.
    • I think Nicole is about to figure out what's going on between Andre and Dani.
    • @Efulton thank you. I don't know how I missed it or didn't recall it.  I'll blame amnesia . Anyway @Errol Could the newer thread be merged to the existing? Thanks in advance.
    • I just finished watching and I have to admit, not once did I find myself wondering who wasn't there. Quick question for anyone who followed this better than I did: was it only Andrew who rescued Cat and John from Clyde, or was Shane involved too? The reactions during their scenes today felt a little off to me. I know it was meant to be vague, but I didn't find it strange that they already knew each other.
    • Yeah, financially, Luna is in better shape than Deacon and Sheila.   -- Scott Clifton must have decided to chew the scenery in every scene of this "Liam is Dying" storyline. Yikes.
    • If J.R. wasn't busy with Ewing Oil, he'd be a heckuva soap recapper. He was SO gleeful at recapping Jenna-Bobby-Pam when the trio and Mark encountered each other at the Oil Baron's Ball. That being said, Lucy, presumably Sue Ellen and maybe Ray should all know this story, or at least part of it. Lucy was definitely at Southfork during Jenna and Bobby's relationship, and I believe Sue Ellen was about to marry J.R. around the time Jenna jilted Bobby. (Ray might not have given a damn.)
