No, I think the character's DEATH had something to do with it.

Bridges and Page were stunt cast to draw viewers to the pilot movie where they'd hopefully take enough interest in the rest of the action to tune in on Monday. The movie is clearly scripted to relieve the two stars of their duties by having them be the murderer and the murdered. Cranston talks about this in his book, how promos flashed shots of the various cast members teasing who would be the victim and who would be the culprit and it was evident that it would be the two movie stars.

I have a foggy memory of a Bridges quote Seli Groves uses in her Ultimate Soap Opera Guide. I think he was asked how he liked working on the soap/would he do it again, and Bridges says something to the effect that he enjoyed the experience enough, but they killed his character so it was a moot point. Groves follows this with a quip about how we daytime fans know that soap death is seldom permanent.

I'm a huge fan of Geraldine Page, I think she's the best thing about the whole two hours. She would have been an extraordinary addition to any soap, if only for a three-month arc. Imagine what Lemay would have written for her.

Geraldine Page is in my top 3 actors.  Back then, especially, there was no way either of those actors would have agreed to a daytime soap in a regular role.  I mean yes Kim Hunter had done an arc on Edge of Night, etc, but Page and Bridges' careers were still more prominent than hers was when she was on a soap.

Wait--Cranston has a book and mentions Loving??

Director Michael Lindsay-Hogg is semi active on FB.  A couple of times, and maybe after a couple of drinks, I've been tempted to message him and ask him about his memories (if he has any) of the pilot film.  But then think better of it.  (Though, I mean, surely he's tired of all those questions about  Brideshead Revisited, or his dozens of Rolling Stones videos and would find it refreshing, right??  FUn random trivia considering Larry Kramer's passing--he directed the original Broadway production of The Normal Heart.  Opening just a month or two before was Broadway's first gay AIDS drama, the now forgotten, but IMHO better written hit, As Is.  He didn't direct that, but the impossible to find, except for 15 minutes on youtube, cable TV version of As Is from 1986 was directed by...  Michael Lindsay-Hogg)

    • I do wonder if the show realized that fans would take to Silk Press and Eva as much as we have?    To me, I think the core four was mostly used to get eyes on the show since all four were familiar performers in both daytime and primetime.   Of the four, I think Nicole is used most effectively where it doesn't look as though she's hogging airtime.  She works as a lead and as a talk to. Anita has been the most under utilized of the four, but I do have a feeling that might be changing once the Ted/Nicole/Eva/Silk Press Story goes back to support status. Of the four, I think Dani has been over-used.. but I do still see potential for the character.  I know some people think she's the modern day Erica Kane, but I don't see that.  Erica was a Have Not that became a Have while Dani is a Have by birth and has done nothing to have earned being a Have. Good cliffhanger.
    • LOL now this sells it for me!  I can't wait to watch later tonight!
    • I think this is a great observation.  I do wonder if some of that was down to how Nixon had started writing story and plot outlines.  By this point (maybe even by the mid 70s) many have discussed how she *didn't* write detailed story outlines anymore--the focus more was on a mood or theme and ABC simply allowed that because they trusted her at this stage (in her "memoir" I think even Megan McTavish talks about Nixon's writing in this way in the 90s and she basically seems to admit that it worked for Nixon.  But if Nixon wasn't in charge of the daily execution of these ideas...)
    • Ooooooo that was a soap reveal!!!   And we even got a brief Kat vs Eva fight.   OOoooo cliffhanger!!! Oh, yeah, I remember they had a cover story, but I find it interesting that it was just mentioned again today. I wonder could it be foreshadowing another twist coming up.
    • Thank you @rsclassicfanforever for 2824 (and that incredible s11 and s12 upload)! The number of non-English speaking episodes left have been reduced to double digits.
    • Eva and Dana came up with a story to tell Fairmont residents that Dana's name is Leslie and that Leslie is Eva's surrogate/foster mom who took her in after Eva's real mom died. This is what they agreed to tell everyone. But Eva is really Dana's daughter, or at least as far as Eva knows and believes.  Eva believes Dana really is her mom.
    • Kat is so shady.   Oh, Eva's out!!
    • Dani...and Eva??? And now Ted and Nicole are setting her up for success. These scenes are sooooo giving old school soap when the schemer is being set up for a fall...loving it.    YASSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! He showed up with his FOINE self!!   Oh my Goodness! Kat is really on it today. Wait! Eva is the daughter of one of Leslie's friends who passed away. OH, REALLY? So that cover story might not be just a cover story then...   These Eva vs Silk Press Sheila scenes!!!    Awww...I guess no Vanessa, but at least she was mentioned.
