GL doesn't really seem to have long term stories. Everything is very self-contained and primetime-y. They don't do cliffhangers or leave you wanting to tune in the next day, ever. I don't expect to see any change really. The only good thing is that if they are splitting the cast up, we may see people more evenly.

That's how I feel when I watch the show. It just doesnt seem like a soap to me anymore.

Gold has never left the GL staff. He went from being HW to co-HW with Millee Taggart, and AHW with Weston and Kreizman.

I'd rather see Gold take over the HW duties from Kreizman. He wasnt great by any means ......and btw where is Millee Taggart??

At first I thought this was like the days of Lorraine Broderick, Hal Corley, James Reilly etc being co head writers...but this is different ...they are two separate HWs??? WTF??

I honestly dont get how this is meant to 'save' GL...it's really just like sprinkling glitter on dog sh*t...

Why doesnt Ellen Wheeler just admit defeat, realise that she's destroyed the longest running daytime drama beyond repair, and step aside to let someone else try and save the show. I honestly think it can be saved...if they center the show around Dinah/Mallet, Reva/Josh and maybe a new generation supercouple (and I DO NOT mean Rafe/Daisy), and their respective families interracting...maybe then it could be watchable.

I miss this GL:

And of course a good long end credits video from this glorious era:

At this point I dont know if GL can be saved. Not only is the writing bad but the production values are awful. But I agree Wheeler needs to move aside and let someone else be EP.

Jill and B&E in the building!!! :)

That's awful, I was thinking more along the lines of Nancy Curlee and Stephen Demorest, the last great HW's of GL.

Hell, I want Nancy and Stephen HW-ing for any soap! That's how good they were!

BTW, B&E can be added only as breakdown writers, they weren't bad at that when they worked for Nancy and Stephen at GL. ;)

Speaking of Beverly M. ....was there any tribute to her on GL?? I have a feeling there wasnt...hacks!!

I think all 4 will be HW's. It's like if Brown, Esensten, Guza and Pratt were all HW's of a show. B&E are a team and Guza and Pratt are a team. Maybe new "teams" are being born. That's what I took from it.

You just described the All My children Doomsday Scenario. All thats missing is Julie Hannah Currthers as ep...oh...NOOOOOOOOOOO!

At the very least, GL may turn back into a daytime soap. Not a good one, per say. But one with cliffhangers, long-term stories, and possibly couples that have an ounce of rooting value?

I tend to think that too much damage has been done and that GL is unfixable but the least PGP could is dump Wheeler and Kreizman and let someone, and I mean just about ANYONE, try to do something with it. I'm tempted to say that a small committee of randomly selected fans could do better. The thought of GL dying the way it is now is too painful. I'd rather it go down with someone who gives a damn at least trying to save it and failing than this.

Will this be enough to help the floundering Granddaddy of all Daytime Soaps?

Christopher Dunn, Lloyd “Lucky” Gold and Jill Lorie Hurst have been appointed Headwriters of broadcast history’s longest running program, Guiding Light, as announced today by the show’s Executive Producer Ellen Wheeler. Dunn, Gold and Lorie Hurst will join current Headwriter David Kreizman to create two new headwriting teams that will work together to bring their vision to the screen.

“I am thrilled about the new roles that David, Jill, Chris and Lucky will play on the headwriting teams at Guiding Light,” said Wheeler. “Since Guiding Light adopted its revolutionary new production model at the start of the year, we have made major changes to nearly every aspect of how we produce the show. I believe that appointing collaborative headwriting teams will help to expand the show’s vision and storytelling ability in this new model. Our new headwriting teams are made up of extraordinarily talented individuals who all respect the rich history of Guiding Light and are all very dedicated to mining that history for the future success of the show.”

Kreizman joined Guiding Light in 1995 as a Production Intern and during his time with the show he has worked as a Production Coordinator, an Associate Producer and began writing scripts and breakdowns for the show in 1997. Kreizman became Headwriter in 2004.

Dunn joined Guiding Light in 1999 and was Co-Headwriter from 2001 – 2002. He began his daytime career as a breakdown writer on Santa Barbara and has also worked on the writing teams of Sunset Beach and General Hospital.

Gold began his writing career playwriting at Edward Albee’s summer workshop in Montauk. Gold’s plays have been produced at the Eugene O’Neill Foundation, the Seattle Rep and McCarter Theatre among others. He has written extensively for film and television including work on Marvin’s Room and Shakespeare in Love. Gold is co-creator of the PBS American Mystery Series, produced by Robert Redford and Rebecca Eaton. In daytime, he has written for One Life to Live, Another World and Guiding Light. He joined Guiding Light in 2001 and has been with the show ever since.

Jill Lorie Hurst joined Guiding Light in 1994 and spent her first five years as a writer’s assistant. During that time Lorie Hurst was partnered with then assistant producer David Kreizman to write a couple of sample scripts for the show. Jill decided to keep her assistant job and wrote part time, while David went on to write full-time. Shortly thereafter, Lorie Hurst was made a script editor, a job she’s held on and off depending on the needs of the writing team and executive producer. In May 2007 Lorie Hurst was named Story Producer when the writing team was reorganized.

Does anyone actually believe this four person head writing team iwill really reverse the free fall GL has been in since its new production model began? Does Ellen Wheeler actually believe her own drivel? GL is history. It's audience has abandoned it, and rightly so, given that TPTB abandoned the loyal GL audience years ago. EW's "production overhaul" is a huge failure by anyone's standards. Now they're letting her futz with the head writing model, too?? Here's the solution, Ellen. Or should I say P&G. Get rid of EW and DK pronto. Get a head writer and EP who understand soaps, specifically GL. Focus on good, believable, emotionally engaging story. That's what will win your audience back. Playing musical chairs with your writing team isn't going to amount to squat. I, for one, am enraged that P&G and CBS let this farce continue. I wish they'd pull the plug now. Let the show go with a shred of dignity left. I as a long time veiwer am sick of waiting for TPTB to get their act together. They've had chance after chance. They've disrepected their audience time and again. Fans shouldn't have to put up with it any longer. Turn off the light! It's time.

Ellen Wheeler will go down as one of the worst Executive Producers in the history of soap operas. It's so sad to see what's happening to GL. :(

Can someone tell me the ratings when Ellen Wheeler became EP, and the ratings when DK took over as HW?

  • Administrator
Did she ever have any Exec experience before Ep'ing GL?

No.

I think she's only had about a year (might be even less!) of producing experience. I have no idea how all of a sudden she got the EP job when there are more experienced producers out there.
