Soap Dish: Car accident and flashback make Nick 'Restless'

By CAROLYN HINSEY

Friday, May 23rd 2008, 4:00 AM

Nick has a car accident next week on "The Young and the Restless," which leads to his getting back his memory.

"Phyllis goes to the hospital and he says, 'I'm fine,' but he's being distant," says Michelle Stafford, who plays Nick's current wife. "Phyllis is thinking, 'Oh, he hit his head again. He's forgotten me.'"

Since Nick lost his memory in a plane crash two years ago, that's not a bad assumption.

"He says, 'Go away. I'm fine.' So they all go away and he sees this little girl, who reminds him of Cassie - and his memory comes back."

First up for Nick is the painful recollection of daughter Cassie's death, and how he cheated on Sharon with Phyllis while they were mourning her.

"He gets upset and goes to the grave site with Sharon," says Stafford. "Phyllis doesn't like that, because a couple of days prior, she said, 'I'll go to the grave site,' and he said, 'No, I don't want to go.' Cut to him saying, 'I went to the grave site with Sharon,' and the fact that she doesn't know where he was all night."

Turns out, "Nick slept on the sofa, which should be cleaned a few times. But Phyllis will always be threatened. When you have an affair and the man marries you, he's going to do it again."

This time, Nick's clean. So Phyllis is free to focus on the launch of their new magazine, Restless Style.

"There's no editor, and we don't really have job titles," says the actress. "We stopped the presses on a Monday, did a photo shoot, and got it on sale on Friday. So we're pretty phenomenal."

Comings and goings: Finola Hughes, who is not on contract as Anna on "General Hospital," was all set to play Sabrina's mother on "Y&R," but ABC put the kibosh on it. ... Christopher Cousins (Cain) is back on "One Life to Live" in July. ... Hunt Block (Ramsey) exits "OLTL" in June. ... Roscoe Born (ex-Mitch, "OLTL") joins "Days of Our Lives" Thursday as a physics dean with a connection to one of the kids. ... Joseph Mascolo (Stefano) is off "Days."... Beth Ehlers (Harley) and E.J. Bonilla (Rafe) leave "Guiding Light" next week. (Ehlers joins "All My Children" this summer.) ... Justine Cotsonas (Sofie) is out at "As the World Turns."

Don't touch that dial: Angie and Jesse's wedding takes a dramatic turn Friday on "AMC" (ABC, 1 p.m.). Cue the kidnapper!

(Hinsey is the editor of Soap Opera Weekly.)

I don't care how contrived some of this s-h-i-t is, I'm just glad it's happening. It's time to end that quad from hell and get Nick the hell away from Phyllis. Maybe this can turn Phyllis back into the desperate lunatic she's supposed to be, while reuniting Sharon and Nick? I hope so!

I'm glad they didn't forget or overlook Nick's memory loss. Will be nice to see him move on. The writing for Victoria and Adam is good, but Nick has been a forgettable frat boy lately, IMO.

They've barely acted like he's had memory loss since he showed up alive. And two years ago? Wasn't that just last year or have I really missed that much Y&R?

It was a year ago, Hinsey made a mistake.

It was last year.

That's what I thought, thanks.

Isn't the anniversary of Cassie's death soon?

^^^It's playing out right now.

Sigh. Tell me Nick is not going to remember switching Summer's paternity (something that has been widely speculated, but that I do not wish to believe).

Nick is the only male on the show with integrity, and I do not wish to lose this.

Please, it's a soap opera. Plenty of characters have made horrible decisions and have been redeemed. For the case of better storyline opportunities, Summer needs to be Jack's kid. Nick and Phyllis have run their course, in fact, they lost whatever made them special when they became a legitimate couple.

If this ends the quad from hell, makes Summer Jack's kid, breaks Nick and Phyllis up, then I am all for it. They can focus on redeeming the wrong Nick caused in a later storyline.

Summer needs to stay Nick's.

Nick isnt the type to do such a thing.

Exactly. And Nick and Phyllis have plenty of story potential.

All they need to do is have a new woman covet Nick, and Phyllis will go into deep insecurity mode. And when that happens, she gets evil.

All that went out the window when they had Nick receive the paternity results and NO ONE ELSE SAW THEM. Also, Nick was undergoing the destruction of his marriage to Sharon and loosing Cassie at the time. People in horrible situations tend to do horrible things, at least in the soap world. It opens up a lot more storyline opportunities if Nick isn't Summer's father.

I'm sorry, but Josh and Michelle lost whatever chemistry they had when Phyllis and Nick's affair ended. Those two are boring together, and its not just the writing. They both just drift through scenes with one another, as if they don't care.

Sharon and Nick belong together, 10 years or marriage and the connection they have just doesn't go away like that. Phyllis needs to move on and find a man that challenges her, and Nick doesn't do that. Phyllis used to be a deeply complicated character who battled between good and evil, not so much anymore. Latham reduced her to a happy housewife, which doesn't make for good soap opera.

Bingo.

Yep.

And they are everything that is, was & continues to be wrong with Y&R.

Indeed.
