From the Soapnet boards, 1982 synopses.

January 4-8, 1982:

Seneca and EJ caught Barbara walking, and she pleaded with them to keep her secret to save ratings for The Proud and the Passionate. Faith tumbled down the stairs after Mendenhall inadvertently closed the passageway.

January 11-15, 1982:

Faith discovered Merit Khara’s mummy in a passageway in the secret room. Jill and Faith quarreled over Ari. Roger was cleared in Barbara’s malpractice suit. EJ learned her former boyfriend Ox Knolls was killed in an accident.

January 18-22, 1982:

Jim hired Joe to further investigate Ari. Dee learned more information about EJ's relationship with Ox. Roger and EJ discovered the beach house was bugged with hidden electronic equipment.

January 25-29, 1982:

Dee failed miserably in her attempt to keep Roger and EJ apart. Foreign agents pursued Ari. During the opening of Merit Khara's tomb, Maeve collapsed and was rushed to Riverside.

February 1-5, 1982:

Roger proposed marriage to EJ. Believing herself dying, Maeve revealed that Jill is Ed Coleridge's natural daughter, which makes Jill and Faith half sisters. Later, Maeve recovered from blood poisoning.

February 8-12, 1982:

EJ was stunned when Ox arrived in New York very much alive. EJ kept the news from Roger that she and Ox are legally married. Ari's cohort Yvonne plotted to use Faith as leverage in finding the River of Gold.

February 15-19, 1982:

Ox agreed to divorce EJ so she can marry Roger, but he won’t go through with it until she pays him to skip the country. Yvonne drugged Faith and pumped her for information about the River of Gold. Later, Yvonne poured booze over Faith and dumped her on Roger’s doorstep.

February 22-26, 1982:

EJ gave Ox the pearls Roger had given her as an engagement present. Ox feared the South American despots will find and kill him. Yvonne kidnapped Faith. Ari attempted to rescue Faith but was killed by Yvonne.

March 1-5, 1982:

Joe saved Faith from being killed by Yvonne. EJ and Roger planned a St. Patrick’s Day wedding. Joe threw the statuette into the fire, destroying all clues to the River of Gold. Yvonne was arrested for Ari's murder.

March 8-12, 1982:

Pat and Kim boarded the same plane bound for New York. Alexei contacted Joe. Ox tried to pawn Roger’s pearls. Pat gave a seriously ill Arly medical attention. Pat and Kim’s plane crash landed. Arly was comatose.

March 15-19, 1982:

Siobhan returned for St. Patrick’s Day. Kim wasn’t upset when Rae insisted she’ll take care of Arly. Seneca warned Rae he’ll fight her for custody of Arly, who battled viral meningitis. Ox accused EJ of doublecrossing him. A dying Alexei urged Joe to assume control of his mob business. Pat announced plans to open a free clinic.

March 22-26, 1982:

Joe lied to Maeve that he refused Alexei’s mob inheritance. Jill served Kim with divorce and custody papers from Seneca. Rae gave financial backing to Pat's clinic plans.

March 29-April 2, 1982:

Maeve covered for Ox when despots came after him. Jill and Faith reconciled their relationship. Joe was at Alexei’s side when he died.

April 5-9, 1982:

Joe feared mob trouble and the loss of Siobhan permanently if he accepts Alexei’s inheritance. EJ continued with plans to marry Roger even though she learned Ox faked their divorce. Siobhan rejected Joe's attempts to reconcile. Dee bristled over wedding preparations for Roger and EJ.

May 3-7, 1982:

Joe and Siobhan celebrated their reconciliation in bed. Ox vowed he’d make good on the racetrack. Kim schemed to tranquilize Arly in order to slip her past Rae’s hired guards.

May 31-June 4, 1982:

Rae and Seneca rescued Kim and Arly from Orson's clutches. Rae wounded Orson, but before he escaped, he told Seneca that Kim engineered Arly's kidnapping. Johnny fumed over Joe and Siobhan's reconciliation.

June 7-11, 1982:

Kirk realized Kim is his daughter, the result of an affair with Rae many years ago. For money and a passport, Orson promised to tell Dee how she can obtain sole ownership of the Crystal Palace. EJ agreed to wait until after Ox's big race to get a divorce.

June 14-18, 1982:

Roger paid Carol to seduce Ox away from Dee. Orson informed Dee that Joe was responsible for her bankruptcy. Rae urged Kim to stay away from Kirk, then warned Kirk that Kim must never know he's her natural father. Ox refused Kirk's offer.

June 21-25, 1982:

A rift developed between Johnny and Siobhan after she agreed to move in with Joe. Kirk purchased the air rights to the Crystal Palace. Ox and EJ got cozy. Rae planned a trip to Italy with Jack and Pat.

July 5-9, 1982:

Kirk gave Rae a ring as a reminder that they conceived Kim in love. Dee hired an electronics expert to rig a video camera and two-way mirror to tape Kim's confession that she orchestrated Arly's kidnapping.

July 12-16, 1982:

A spiteful Roger had Ox arrested, but he was later released. Dee offered Kim's taped confession to Rae for a price. Leopold warned Ox to win the next auto race. Kim manipulated Pat.

Kim was forced to sign over custody of Arly to Rae. Jill opposed Seneca's agreement with Rae to share joint custody of Arly.

When did the Labine's stop writing RH in 82? I notice in mid-summer 1982 that several stories seemed to shift, etc... though I notice that one of Dee's schemes actually succeeded eventually (i.e. regaining air rights to Crystal Palace due to blackmail tape she had made in regards to paternity). I fail to see this period as Kirkland's hope since Pat, Faith, Dee, Rae, Kim, Seneca, and Siobhan had ample story. Though the brief serial killer story came out of nowhere plus Johnny being angry with Maeve taking dance lessons.. what was that all about?

Strangely, I think this brief time that the Labine's didn't write the show seems very intriguing where different characters/situation came out... Pat had a new girlfriend, Faith had a new boyfriend.. Dee schemed, etc.. Imho

I think the Claire Labine and Paul Mayer were let go in early 1982.

The story with Maeve was an homage to Roseland, which Helen Gallagher appeared in. Is the Matthew in this story the same man who was Rose's father?

I haven't seen any of these episodes, but some who did have said that Kirkland's Hope was an exaggeration, and that the true decimation was not until 1984.

Claire would probably agree, since when she was asked which RH writer was closest to her vision (paraphrasing) she said Mary Ryan Munisteri, who was headwriter in 1982.

If you are interested, I have some Digest synopses from 1982, and would be happy to post them.

Although, this newspaper column says that the first several months of Pat Falken-Smith's tenure got off to a good start and there was an improvement in ratings and in show quality. It must have gone downhill after that.

Writer Known As 'Soap Doc'/1984

Carl- thanks for posting 1982 & 1983 recaps.

Here are the ones for 1984-

January 2-6, 1984:

Jack succumbed to Sydney's advances, and they ended up in bed together. Jill and Frank decided to elope. Siobhan took a powder over Joe's news about Jacqueline's pregnancy.

January 9-13, 1984:

Bill secretly met with a mystery man. Prince told Jacqueline that Siobhan and Joe have rekindled their love affair. Maggie enjoyed modeling for Hal. Siobhan arranged a meeting with Joe's mobster cousin Laslo Novotny.

January 16-20, 1984:

Maggie accepted a job waitressing at Greenburg's Deli after Dave Greenburg rescued her from a thug named Rico. Siobhan confessed to Bill that she's pregnant with Joe's baby and fears retaliation from the mob if the paternity becomes public knowledge. Bill offered to marry Siobhan and conceal the truth by pretending he fathered her child. Jacqueline panicked when Joe urged her to confirm her pregnancy with a test.

January 23-27, 1984:

Jacqueline sighed with relief when Joe believed her lie that the pregnancy test came back positive. Jack had suspicions about the true nature of Max's activities. An explosion ripped through Ryan's Bar after the mob detonated a bomb intending to kill Joe. Joe and Maggie were critically injured when an unstable wall collapsed on top of them, burying them under debris.

January 30 - February 3, 1984:

Maggie and Joe survived their injuries from the explosion in Ryan's. Jack confided to Sydney that he suspects Max has mob connections. Seneca admitted to Rae that he still has feelings for Jill. Hutch urged Max to tell Jacqueline that he arranged her marriage to Joe, who doesn't really love her.

February 6-10, 1984:

Jacqueline insisted she'll take over Joe's affairs. Bill convinced Siobhan to fake an engagement to him in order to fool the Dubujaks. Siobhan and Jacqueline squared off over Joe, and Siobhan promised she'll stay away from him. Roger couldn't get Maggie off his mind.

February 13-17, 1984:

Jacqueline learned Joe's injuries have left him unable to have children. A drunken Roger cornered Maggie and tried to rape her. Siobhan and Bill went public with their engagement while having a romantic dinner in front of Max and Jacqueline. Max suggested Siobhan and Bill have the look of two lovers, while Jacqueline noticed the same look between Max and Jill. Frank and Maggie shared a passionate kiss after he saved her from Roger's lecherous attack.

February 20-24, 1984:

Maggie and Frank were disturbed with memories of the kiss they shared. Desperate to keep up her pregnancy charade for impotent Joe, Jacqueline offered to pay Laslo to get her pregnant, but he refused. Sydney drove a wedge between Jack and Leigh.

February 27-March 2, 1984:

Siobhan called off her engagement to Bill. Leigh and Jack ended their relationship. Another attempt on Joe's life was planned. Max watched a videotape of Siobhan and Joe making love. Maggie and Frank fought their attraction to one another.

March 5-9, 1984:

Joe killed Hutch's thug who tried to smother Joe to death. Jacqueline and Bill were disgusted after viewing Max's secretly recorded tape of Joe and Siobhan having sex.

March 12-16, 1984:

Bill prevented an assassin from murdering Joe. Maeve and Johnny's eldest daughter Kathleen sent daughter Maura to live with the Ryans. Maura insisted that everyone call her Katie. Siobhan learned that Joe can never father another child.

March 19-23, 1984:

Leigh sold half of her television station to businessman Jeremy Winthrop. Siobhan discovered that Bill is involved in a dangerous undercover investigation. Jacqueline announced to Max that she's pregnant.

March 26-30, 1984:

Bess walked in on Frank and Maggie having another romantic encounter, then warned Maggie to stay away from Frank. Johnny was annoyed after spotting Katie flirting for attention. Max was determined to learn Joe's whereabouts.

April 2-6, 1984:

Bill refused to reveal to Max where Joe has been hospitalized. Max had Jacqueline tailed, hoping she'll lead him to Joe. A guilty Frank couldn't resist memories of Maggie. Roger's drinking continued to disrupt his life.

April 9-13, 1984:

Thanks. I never knew that about that tenure having a ratings boost.

I like some of the ideas of changes she made early on (Faith was always a failed character, IMO, Kevin was annoying and superfluous) but from what I've read it just sounds like it became a mess, and these synopses don't exactly change my mind. I do like Cali Timmons a lot but Maggie's stories sound all over the place.

I could easily have seen Rae being inserted in several of these stories especially in regards to Max... I could have seen her dealing with Jacqueline/Maggie, etc. From what I hear... Dee was played by Robin Mattson during this time and that is wrong on so many levels.. Robin Mattson is too confident/sarcastic to play Dee properly, imho.

I do agree writing out Faith was a good idea... there didn't seem to be any place for her on the canvas at that time, but where were the Ryan's family in 1984? What was Pat, Johnny, Maeve doing at this time? 1984 was more of a downfall for the show then 1982 was by a long-shot!

I had typed these up and was putting them over at Soapnet just as they announced the message forums were going to be closing. I've noticed that not all the information given is 100% correct - and some columns have misspelled names like Ilene Kristin or Julie (Campbell) instead of Julia.

1975/1976
