My impression from interviews with Claire Labine is that the Dirty Harry factor was really just a hangup among the higher ups at ABC and that they eventually won that battle, perhaps because he wasn't resonating as much with the audience as they would have liked.

Andrew got an Emmy nom during his brief tenure. Ironic, not in the sense of skill because he's a talented actor but because he was let go for other reasons. DId any of the other Franks get Emmy noms?

Another thing I thought was kind of funny was that Frank was basically supposed to be, I think, in the mold of JFK and Andrew later played JFK in a tv show.

I also never bought the “Dirty Harry” reason for Robinson’s departure. It’s not that he’s a bad actor (as Hawkins was). It’s just that he was miscast as RH’s younger leading man. He’s more of a character actor. He didn’t have the looks or the right presence to play Frank.

Robinson’s acting was actually better than DHK’s initially. DHK was pretty stiff in his first few months, but then he settled into the role.

Good point about Pierson’s Frank as the only one believable as this driven political animal.

Strangely enough, if the episodes posted on YouTube are any indication, they didn't run the full credits at all the final week the show was on the air - Claire Labine must have been really squeezing every second out of the airtime ABC allocated them.

She debuted on June 15, 1984, and stayed with the show through early December. Here's two promos for her debut:

There are three episodes featuring her on YouTube, from July 27, November 21, and November 22. The episodes posted by the freeflyur, shessoweet88, and MHTV PCNYSTATE accounts originated from a set of 80s RH tapes collected and distributed by a SoapNet poster named Wanda back around 2005, and that set actually included a bunch of episodes with RM as Delia from June and July 1984 (including her debut), but for whatever reason those have never made it to YouTube (perhaps the quality made them difficult to digitize). I used to have a set of them on VHS, but I'm pretty sure my parents junked them at some point--unfortunate as I would've tried to post them to YT myself otherwise.

Not that this is saying anything new, but it's remarkable how divorced RM's Delia felt from what either Ilene Kristen or Randall Edwards brought to the role.

Agreed Robin Mattson wasn't quite the right fit for Delia -- it's about the only role she didn't quite gel with during her long soap career.  I LOVED Randall Edwards.  Randall's Delia felt more vulnerable and sympathetic.  You really rooted for her.

In later years, Maggie felt like Delia 2.0.  Vulnerable, manipulative, spoiled...but you rooted for her.

Both Randall and Cali Timmons deserved bigger roles after RH.  Cali could have easily fit in on GL or Y&R.  And Randall's comedy chops deserved a bigger audience.

Definitely agree with this, and I think it's one of the elements that made the Maggie/Roger/Delia triangle work so well. Both Delia and Maggie were trying to bring down a version of themselves before ultimately forging an uneasy peace.

And while I love Ilene Kristen, I started watching the SoapNet reruns during Randall's time in the role, and I'll always have a major soft spot for her even if I acknowledge Ilene is the definitive actress in the part.

According to the soap columns at the time, Randall Edwards was brought in as a temporary fill-in for Julie Ridley (either due to pregnancy or illness?). When Ridley chose not to return, they asked Edwards to remain in the role, but she declined (presumably for the same reason she left RH).

To me it's hard to compare Robyn Millan to the others since she was around for such a short time (5 episodes). However, she did have the advantage that the writing for Delia was consistent in that period. The issue with Robin Mattson wasn't just that she was not the right fit as a performer, but the writing for the character also felt off-kilter during that period. Her Delia was disconnected from the character's history, and it didn't help that most of her story was with two actors who were also new to the show (Franz Luz and Harve Presnell, both of whom were jettisoned when Mattson opted not to renew her contract).

    • Has BTG been using flashbacks much? Of course, as a new show there aren't many f/b worthy moments but I think they can get by w/o having to use/recreate the Leslie reveal scene. What other 'soap' tropes have they employed or ignored so far? We've talked about the lack of traditional cliffhangers with lingering camera shots. They have done a couple of fantasy scenes. Has anyone apart from Dana had talk to themselves scenes? Montages?
    • Thank You!!! @rsclassicfanforever and to anyone else who contributed to the vaults over the years. I have dipped in/out and gotten my life watching Y&R early years. I never would had the appreciation for characters like Lorie Brooks if not for the Vaults, so again, Thanks.
    • Another lot of skipped episodes to look forward to when the time comes on Videoland. So annoying. They have skipped so many, especially in  season 15 where they skipped 19 episodes throughout the season. Is it just me or is the vault down? It's like a different error message this time so it's hard to know if it's me this time.
    • thank you for uploading the rest of season 12!!! I hope i can get them soon the links down! Thank you again for posting the B&B classic episodes to revisit!!!!
    • Hmm, okay.  BTW, my only problem with Kai & the surgery story is where is this guy's family? And, another BTW, I think I may have inadvertently added to that rumor from last year about a male descendant of Justus Ward. You see, that is an idea I could really get behind! Like I would pay to see those scenes. And, true, I did hear it ... [sheepish grin]

Yes they can. While rare, its not like soaps in the past havent said F that and used flashbacks of a scene even when a recast has been done. OLTL used to do that
    • Well, I am glad to know that & for it to make sense, so thanks for the info &  the perspective, also. At the end of AMC 1.0, I thought the new young talent was really quite good, but I missed Eden & NuBianca just ... well, I wasn't 100% sold on her & Bianca was so important to me. But then, Tad & Dixie were also important & yep, there's another problem, for me I mean. I'm not your typical AMC fan but I hung in there anyway. I know what you mean because it wasn't as good as it once had been but it was still Agnes's show in Pine Valley. Some of that is a bittersweet nostalgic clinging to the past, I guess. By that time I'd been through so many show cancellations. AW, Santa Barbara, PC, The City, GL, ATWT.

Betsy Snyder, when she was at DAYS was part of the WGA winning writing team before she died, tragically far too young.
    • Yep Edmund and Tad went under cover to infiltrate the... Willow Lake (I think?) old folks community scandal that was exploiting Phoebe, etc.  (Which at one point led to Edmund rescuing Brooke from quicksand--common around Pine Valley I guess

) EDIT maybe I'm wrong.  I found the quicksand scene

But for the story all I can find is Edmund going undercover as the gigolo "preying" on older women, Eduardo (no one would recognize him with that disguise and name ) so the drag must have been.. a different story?
    • But then he HATES the original Heather Webber (Cher's half sister played her, right?) and we know what happened when Robin would step into the role a year after this.  He does seem pretty spot on about actors who show promise otherwise.  It's interesting he knocks OLTL early on (though I loved all the recently released episodes from this era we got) but does give a lot of credit to the actress playing Cathy despite earlier complaining about her story.  And over all, while quite negative, his various pros and cons on the shows sounds about right with what I know of the shows at this time. This was a July dated issue of the magazine but and I know they date mags a month or two in advance--obviously when he wrote this he didn't know Lovers and Friends was gonna go off the air (in May I think).
