Even though I think the original 90210 was generally a crappy show about pretty people with problems, I did like it much better after Brenda left. I liked how trashy it got once Val came on, the show literally went from being regular cheese to pepperjack cheese.

I might be in the minority, but I think the show got on better without Brenda, and ratings actually rose without her, though 90210 was never a huge ratings success, but it was a success for Fox at the time.

I totally agree, but for some reason, seasons 5 to 7 are my favourites. I can't stand the last few seasons and I hated the early years.

The early years threw teen cliches so overtly at the face of the audience week after week. They handled the typical teen social story in such sappy and movie of the week-esque way.

However, the sensationalism of the show once Val came on wore off for me somewhere in season 8.

I actually prefer the earlier, cheesier seasons to the latter ones. Mainly because I love episodic shows. But I will say s5 was pretty damn good until the last 10 episodes(Dylan seeing visions of his past life? Kelly and the lesbian stalker? Andrea having an affair? Val whoring it up with all the men of Beverly Hills? Seriously WTF were the smoking when they wrote all that bull s.hit?).

I never saw any similarities between 90210 and Degrassi. Degrassi (in all its incarnations) was/is so gritty and real, 90210 was a lot more sappy and saccharine to me. I always got the feeling that the writers and producers of Degrassi thoroughly researched the social issues they dealt with, whereas 90210 gave characters drug addictions and child abuse for the sake of giving them. 90210 and Melrose Place were so fluffy, and a lot of the time their portrayal of certain issues was so horrendous and so poorly researched. Also, DeGrassi always had better diversity and a more organic group of characters, I didn't find any of that on 90210.

However, I understood why 90210 switched to a more campy and trashy format from season 5 onwards. The characters were no longer teens, they had to find something to do with them. What better way than to trash it up? :)

I always loved Valerie Malone though, mainly becuse she hated Kelly so much, and I NEVER could stand Kelly. Val might have been a bitch and a whore, but she didn't walk around thinking she was high and mighty like Kelly.

Sometimes trainwrecks are fun to watch. :)

My older sister would watch the show from time to time and I would watch it with her sometimes. I didn't watch 90210 because I wanted to see high-end drama, I just accepted it as fluff and something that tried to entertain, not change the world. In my opinion, it's a not a very good show, but it's watchable for me, the middle seasons at least. I loved the trashy nature and I liked Val in the beginning.

^^ I understand what you're saying. But honestly I wouldn't watch a show I thought was c r a p. I have a hard time keeping up with the shows I do watch because of my "personal schedule", so I wouldn't waste my time on a show like that. Like for example Lost. I liked season 1, after that it just got lost (hehe). So I got that one of my list. It's just not worth it for me.

    • Yes, Stacy does this both for early DAYS & early GH. I have written some for her, for DAYS. But just one tiny point & that is that she only deals with DVDs. I realize that is not the point of your posting but it seemed the right thing to clarify. I know that you know that video tapes is past, not present.
    • Hahahha I think sleeping with almost all of your daughters's boyfriends and husbands and getting pregnant... definitely gives Brooke the right to top 1 place. Long live the whore of Beverly hills.

    • CurlyQGrl has DVDs of some episodes, that they can sell, but that doesn't matter. What is helpful: they describe the scenes on the tapes, so you can read that as recaps without ordering anything. Doesn't really give storylines, though, which is what you asked for.  Here's the links anyhow. full menu https://www.angelfire.com/tv/curlyqgrl/menu.html GH page https://www.angelfire.com/tv/curlyqgrl/gh/menu.html GH 1960s https://www.angelfire.com/tv/curlyqgrl/gh/eps/gheps1960s.htm
    • I would argue that Another World never played "everything" for laughs. Even when there were comedic scenes in some storylines there were other storylines that were not intended as comedy.  You give 1988 as the end point, and Mary was on the canvas from August 1986 to February 1989, so she must have overlapped with the despised laughs you are referring to at least half of the time she was there. I honestly can't recall any real comedy that Mary would have been part of. I don't think she was lighthearted about choosing between two husbands, MJ's prostitution, Kathleen's death, or even her son Scott dating her daughter Cheryl.  I would have said that the amount of comedy depended on the head writer and there was more comedy under Richard Culliton and Gary Tomlin in 1984 than subsequent headwriters. I guess there was an outbreak of more comedy when Cecile kidnapped Cass from his wedding in 1986, but in general the Sin Stalker wasn't presented as funny, Mitch's return wasn't funny, John's arrival wasn't funny, Reginald wasn't funny. The tone was serious even if the plots verged on the ludicrous. And maybe that's what you mean -- but I would make a distinction between intentional comedy and storylines I can't take seriously for other reasons.
    • I'm excited for us to get back to a full weeks worth of episodes and also us beginning to move into the episodes filmed once the show premiered. We're already starting to see changes in the lighting and the way certain characters are styled. Of course we know this week we have our first recast as well. After the big Eva reveal, I hope the show continues to move into a positive direction and that we see them starting to fix some of the things we've all had issues with.
    • It seems like they may have been going in one direction for Andre and then changed their mind. He had this player/bachelor thing going at first where he was messing with Dani, seemed to be feeling Eva, and then somehow smitten by bland Ashley of all people. I feel like Ashley was supposed to be the one that finally made him want to be with someone and settle. The way he talked her up in those earlier episodes was really confusing. The wonderful, amazing nurse Ashley and conveniently she's unattainable because she has a partner, but he can't stop thinking of her and takes these busted pics of her. It was a mess. However, it all seems to have been dropped. I honestly feel like Andre can go. That may be an unpopular opinion but I don't need his breathy final syllable to be content with BTG. It's always like "There's gotta be another wh-ahyy"
    • This is where McLaibey falls apart. It becomes clear that McTavish had not thought past Brent/Marion...so the energy drops and she starts throwing things at the wall (Blakes twins, Lonatrat.)   Fans HATED this funeral. Everyone is mad at everyone else, which is fine, the death of a beloved community figure would give people a reason to come together...(Quint and Nola could come together at least for  a bit to support each other, Nola and VAn could finally admit they kinda, sorta like each other) Its just an example of McTavish's mean writing.   I have a feeling they were going to make Dahlia Frank's kid but they chickened out. Making Tina a prostitute didn't help, they could have been lovers when they were young but felt society pressure to part. Marcus took over David's role (you can't have two young black men at that time...)   Get used to it...this will happen, the same storyline over and over until the end.
    • Does anyone happen to have a recording or any footage of Jennifer’s funeral?
    • It's such a shame that the conflict couldn't be resolved in a mature way between the two actors.. especially since Albee was a bigger asset for the show in terms of character and his popular will they/won't they pairing with Deborah Saxon. One of the things about Edge was that it was just as popular with male viewers as it was with women.  It's one of things I think the show forgot in the final year or two with the deemphasis on the male characters.
