Success in this universe, IMO, is to (a) make sure one's decline trend is no steeper than the average; (B) hopefully make one's decline slope less steep than average.

REAL success is what Latham achieved during the first part of her run (yes, I'm serious): Ratings growth of 0.2-0.4 during the year (you know LML did this!), and renewed audience enjoyment (during the early days of Victor and Brad's stories...before they devolved...there was a lot of positive excitement about what Latham was bringing).

Oh, how I wish Latham could have sustained that early momentum. That early success is what got her also-named EP (and brought too much power...and the rest is history).

NOTHING is sustainable in the soap universe. Y&R will be gone by 2016, and all other soaps before then, as you know :). Sustainability simply means "keeping the patient relatively comfortable, and the family relatively satisfied, during these terminal days".

I've been spending part of the weekend converting vinyl disks to MP3. This is motivated by the request of a younger co-resident who is hooked on Rock Band/Guitar Hero. Those games feature all kinds of classic rock. So, there is an upsurge in sales/downloads of classic rock due to the new market created by these games.

I think that is a beautiful example of how you reinvigorate "old" and make it relevant to "young"...you place it in a new platform that is cool and interesting to the young audience.

Soaps are an old, obsolete genre. Like rock and roll in the late 70s, soaps are in their waning days. [i know rock didn't die for everyone...but I'm talking about album sales, etc.] Rock had to reinvent to thrive (e.g., grunge, alternative, etc.)

Soaps have to figure out what their reinvention is...and how they can get placed in new "cool" platforms. In that sense, I think Eden Riegel's Imaginary Bitches is totally on the right track.

Soaps have an extra hurdle. Rock was always "cool". So, it wasn't so embarrassing to be a fan, even when rock sort of fell out of fashion in the long thirty year gap before Rock Band. Soaps NEVER had that cool factor (not counting Luke and Laura). So I think it will be much harder for them to find that new platform.

That said, I think it has been happening. I think The Sopranos was a perfect example of how the cool factor could be brought to soaps, and what the modern conditions are for soaps to succeed (limited runs, fixed endings, shorter term, primetime/premium platforms, stories that appeal to a different demo).

And I know that you know that I know... It's just that I was typing in fast reply. Whenever I do, I tend to forget to click on the smilies since they're not right there. But I totally was being sarcastic. ;):P:)

But it's so much fun, challenging people to make sense of the nonsensible! As I described it once a couple weeks ago, it's like watching a contortionist in the Freak Show at the circus!

Eh. We'll see what crops up this summer when Pratt comes on. I mean, he's creating Taylor McBride, right? According to the Algonquin Roundtable of One, she's already going to be a much better character than Greenlee. A REAL WOMAN compared to a little girl! You know... a female character named after a Pratt-created psycho slut from Melrose Place. That has maturity and class written all over it, fer sure!

Awww I love being the topic of conversation, if you don't like it, don't read it, simple as that ;)

But anywho, we should get back on topic of convo, instead of highjacking Toupsy's thread

You know what? If you don't like the things I say, that's too damn bad, no one forces you to read them.

It's my OPINION, big freaking deal.

Oh and let me guess, with your ever changing personality, I bet suddenly you'll think Pratt is so much better than Beall, I mean after all you did create the Amanda L. Beall HATE Coalition, oh but wait that's right, only YOU are allowed to HATE someone whether they're ficitonal or real

I may dislike a few real life people on soaps, but even I wouldn't go so far as to create something about hating a REAL person, seriously that's pretty damn pathetic

That should make Toups happy, a former Passions writer finding work.

However, the dialogue on Passions was beyond atrocious, so I guess that isn't a priority for Dena and company. Was the dialogue any good, Ponz? Some scriptwriters do well with better direction and can improve.

Thanks, Ponz. I wonder how this got by me. LOL

Of course I'm happy. I love my Passions writers. :) They can write really good scripts when given the chance and they're very good with humour too.

Oh so Rick and Victor were together on one screen and Dena was by herself on the first? I thought Rick would've stayed on the same page as Dena since he's her Co-HW.

Thanks, Jason. I guess he's not listed every day then.

    • 6-4   Getting around to the rewatching and I guess Dani/Bill/Hayley as A story is coming around better to me. I hope that means that I will feel different about Friday's episode which first time around I felt was more of a Wednesday/Thursday episode. Anita's story and Dani/Bill/Hayley (with Kat vs SilkPress being a solid B plot to keep the SilkPress storyline alive, but NOT A story) have been the focus for this past week. So I'm worried I'll feel a way when I get back to Friday's episode. I guess I'm about to find out.   I know I have issues with Dani/Bill/Hayley coming back into focus since the much better paced SilkPress storyline is truly where it's at with so much aftermath/new direction to explore. However, I'm finding that...just like with the story of Martin's secret being slowly woven back into the story narrative...I care a little bit more for it since it's been background since Week 3, Month 1. IMHO the characters...outside of Hayley...have been developed in other plots. The past week and a half has had Dani and Andre growing closer and they have gotten to the 'third month what are we?' talk that I expect in all relationships in real life. And I liked how the writers have slowly had friction between them to see what they are made of? Is it still just a booty call or can it be more? Meanwhile, Bill has been hiding his physical issues for months. Too busy messing with other people's marriages.

So now that they have some more POV to them, it was good to see an organic...and yes, it was organic...reason for them to be in the same room. In this case...the hospital room. Lord, Karla and Timon have such great chemistry. And Dani and Bill were so acting like exes. No wonder Hayley feels threatened. Oh, well. lol. Bonus...the drama with Bill has Hayley and Naomi back in each other's orbit. They don't have enough scenes together.    You all know I was waiting for Anita's story. So how am I feeling? Pretty good. TT has been playing it to the hilt. And I was not expecting the story of a fourth member who killed themselves after being pushed out. And it's had a build. First through Tracy. And now with Sharon...who is swiftly being established as a piece of work. A Have-Not (if not Has-Been) who is not above scheming. Okay. lol. I liked the conversation between Anita and Vernon where she told him the truth, and he tried to hold her up. Whether she deserved it or not, it was good to see. I'm sure all of the secrets are not out yet so I look forward to more. Cuz we know they are not cancelling the reunion. Which fingers crossed...will be at the police fundraiser.     Honestly, I continued to be impressed with how the writers have kept Silk Press Sheila out of jail, but still playing the beats of it all. She's definitely in covering her tracks mode, and it's great to watch. It's also great to see her mixing it up with different characters. I was happy to get the long-awaited showdown between her and Nosy Nurse and Nosy Nurse READ...HER...DOWN. I was just disappointed Nosy Nurse spilled some tea. And that led to SilkPress's scene with Andre. And then Andre...lord...talked too much.   C plot this episode has been Chelesa's love life. I was wondering where it was going to go after her talk with Vernon. Enter...Mystery Woman. I wonder what her secret would be that would get in her way with Chels. Related to an enemy of the Duprees? Married? I am intrigued. And I do like Chelesa getting the spotlight because daytime does not really do it like how they are doing it with her.    Can Kat and Jacob get a spinoff? lol.
    • 1986 began with the EP change from Gail Kobe to Joe Willmore and the HW change from Pamela Long to Jeff Ryder. Over the course of 1986 there was turnover in the HW ranks: Jeff Ryder, Jeff Ryder and Mary Ryan Munisteri as co-HWs, Mary Ryan Munisteri and Ellen Barrett as co-HWs, Joseph Manetta, Joseph Manetta and Sheri Anderson as co-HWs. The 1986 ratings reflected the quality of the show. GL was saved from cancel territory in 1986 because Capitol was still CBS's lowest-rated daytime drama.
    • As Michael should be...DARK.   I'm just getting through my first few scenes of Rory as Michael. And I'm already picking up chemistry with LW, EMcCoy, and SMattson from the jump. I liked Rory as Noah on Y&R, but felt it was wasted potential. So far...he's proving me right.
    • Oh, lord. Those rumors are true, aren't they?
    • Is it supposed to be romantic that Victor and Kyle are using Claire as some sort of contractual agreement? Ridiculous. I was waiting for Claire to squirt water out of the huge flower on her dress. And within minutes of the Monday episode beginning the first mention of ...guess who???
    • I haven't been able to watch GH lately, but I just saw this clip.  Wow.  Rory Gibson is so different from his time at Y&R.  This really speaks to the bad writing at Y&R I guess! A lot of fire here.
    • @soapfan770 Thanks for the Sheri Anderson interview. So she admits to being influenced by Wall Street, but did she really think that 25 years later (going by real time) the audience wouldn't notice the dust off of The Sound of Music?

    • Thanks @soapfan770 . Sheri seems to have a much different take on Emma's husband than I remember the show having.
    • Lucky said he’s gonna travel this summer with Aidan. It was a quick line. Willow looks dumber by the day somehow.
