Administrator Toups Posted November 14, 2007 Administrator Share Posted November 14, 2007 Just heard about another writer going on financial core and coincidently it's another ex-Sunset Beacher - OLTL's Gary Tomlin! More names are going to be released soon........
Members Y&RWorldTurner
^With the SuBe connection, one can only hope Guza follows suit, and then when the strike is over, they fire his ass! I'm not surprised that Gary Tomlin went on financial core, he has concentrated a lot more on directing and producing over the past few years and hasn't written for anything since Santa Barbara, until now of course. Members Vee
Well, that answers who is writing OLTL. Gary is a good man but I do not want him head writing.
Members winterguy125
Hopefully Richard C. for ATWT. Please don't let JP being doing financial core. The more I think about this whole thing this could be great for Daytime, with most of the writers possibly being fired if they don't do financial core. Members Vee
I respect those who strike far more, no matter who they are or what they've done. He loves OLTL but I just can't see Gary being a good HW at all. He hired terrible HWs at OLTL and reportedly was very hands-on with the writing and the "humor" that curdled quickly. The show is funnier now without trying so hard and being so juvenile. Some of Gary's ideas (Gay Rex, Live Week) were groundbreaking, but his execution stunk. Members Y&RWorldTurner
That would be nice, but that's NEVER going to happen. The Culliton's are soap writing whores, who've written for nearly every soap on the air. Richard knows that if he leaves or gets fired from ATWT again, he'll probably never get hired by another soap if he goes on financial core. Members Vee
Why is that exactly? I thought he'd done fairly well for himself at every show but GH.
Members Y&RWorldTurner
OK, Christopher Whitesell might be terrible, but Lorraine Broderick is not. I think Whitesell and Broderick, though not perfect, were the last competent head writers OLTL had. Though if Tomlin is made HW, I can just imagine how campy and out there things will get, but not like OLTL hasn't gone down that path before. Members Y&RWorldTurner
At this point, a 3rd grader could do a better job than B&E.
Members Y&RWorldTurner
Richard Culliton's strengths are in script writing, not head writing. His head writing stints, though not overtly awful, left a lot to be desired. As a script writer, he's probably the second most respected in the industry, after the great Patrick Mulcahey, of course. Members Vee
Lorraine Broderick has been good, yes, but she was not good at OLTL. Almost every story was ruined by bad follow through or the wrong focus. Gary decided every minor player was "irreplaceable" and kept everyone he could, Sam, Jen, Troy, it was a mess. He should be EP, he occasionally has some great ideas, he should not be allowed near the head writing. I was fine with him being in the writers' room because he has a long history with that, but as HW, no way. I thought RC was excellent last time at AMC, BTW. And I think Carlivati at OLTL is much better than Whitesell and Broderick so far.
Members Y&RWorldTurner
I'm also willing to bet Josh Griffith won't do too well at Y&R, the guy's a dialogue writer, not a good HW (even if he balanced-out Malone at OLTL). But at this point, can Y&R get any worse than it already is?
