TV Guide: Better Days Ahead

This is what MTSRocks posted:

Like I said before I find him to be a tad bit overrated (just because he comes from Y&R doesn't make him great) but I am optimistic to see what he does.

Anywho here is some things from TVGuide.

Weak leadership, cheesy production values, mediocre casting, lazy actors, threats of cancellation--DOOL has been plagued by it all lately. But there's a good chance those DAYS are over. After an NBC-enforced shakeup, key producing and casting personnel have been dumped and a new sheriff--Edward Scott, former EP of the Y&R--has taken charge in Salem.

"My plan is to get DAYS back to beautiful basics--real drama with real people" says Scott. "That's why the audience is watching so much reality TV--they want to feel things are really happening." That doesn't mean DAYS will dispense with its crazy trademark theatrics. Notes Scott: "We have some wild stuff coming up with Stefano. In fact, we're going to do "Kill Bill". We just can't afford to do this over the top stuff all the time."

Expect changes in lighting, music, editing, wardrobe and the performances. "The cast isn't used to getting direction, so there's a whole new mind set now. They can no longer just learn the words and blow through scenes. They need to find meaning and levels in the material. Everybody got out of that habit." He's brought along former Y&R casting chief Marnie Saitta, a sign that acting chops and not just looks will be required of newbies.

Scott is known for his alpha dog style and has already thrown down the gauntlet to NBC. Last January at TCA the network brass pretty much declared DAYS a goner. "We know that is looming over us" Scott admits. "My goal is to make DAYS such a great show that there's no way they're going to be able to cancel it. They'll be embarrassed to do it."

According to sources, NBC seems to be softening on their stance earlier in the year when NBC president Jeff Zucker announced to the media that DAYS may not continue to air on NBC after its contract expires in 2009.

However, since the comments from Zucker, NBC has recently done some things to suggest otherwise. The firing of Stephen Wyman and the hiring of emmy winning Ed Scott is a huge sign of support from NBC. In addition, new co-chairman of NBC, Ben Silverman has made several stops to the set of DAYS to welcome Scott aboard and to mingle with the cast and crew.

Ken Corday has also publically stated that the tension between NBC and DAYS has definetly softened over the last few months and that the two are actively working towards keeping their 40+ year union alive.

Sources close to both the network and the show say that NBC is once again backing the show and at least for now is giving them some form of support (their promotion budget was just recently increased by NBC).

Stay Tuned!

Glad to hear about the promo budget increase. But let's think: is NBC just taking the EASY way? After all, they're probably just giving "Days" any money that "Passions" promos cost.

But I haven't seen MTSRocks' and Scoopster's posts there! Yes, the talk is similar, though. :)

HELLO? Here is the problem. No one bothered to give them direction. You need the EP to tell the actors how material should be conveyed on screen. Look at Stephen Nichols blog were on Ed Scott's first day and he seemed amazed at the input he was getting from Scott.

I think this may have been going on--at least off and on for a while. When I was taking drama at UVIC up in my hometown of Victoria we had one fo the drama departments famous grads. Critchlow? he played Mike Horton on the show in the 90s to do a few workshops when he was back in town. This was about 5-6 years ago and he answered a bunch of questions--back then I had no real knowledge of DAYS except that it was one of the soaps I had never been able to get into in the 90s cuz of its style. Anyway he basically said he left because he got tired of how they were handling the show acting wise, saying to his knowledge it was much worse than most soaps he knew--basically he said they'd give you your lines (and apparantly while he worked there they still often used cards and telepromptors--something I know ABC forbid on their shows by the mid 1980s--not sure about other ones), tell you your marks, often making them as static as possible and then shoot your scene--no actual direction.

This may be a dumb question but I've been a bit outa touch lately--who replaced Ed at Y&R?? I know Ed was EP and an important presence to the show ever since John Conboy famously left to do Capitol--even before

David Shaugnessy(sp?) if I'm correct.

David Shaugnessy(sp?) if I'm correct.

Yes, Ed left/was fired from Y&R in 2001 and he was replaced by David Shaughnessy, who imo, reinvigorated Y&R. Scott kind of burnt out towards the end of his run. Shaughnessy left Y&R in 2004, and that's when things kind of started to head south. Scott came back to Y&R as Supervising Producer in 2004, but that's essentially a nothing position.

I hope one day that David Shaughnessy finds his way back to Y&R...

I wonder f GH actors get direction because reading that article it reminded me alot of what I see happening on GH.

I'm sorry, hate GH for the storylines and horrendous creative vision of Guza/Frons/JFP, but one thing GH has always been stellar at (though some exceptions do apply) is the acting.

It's just that I have read articles and recaps from events where the actor/actress says they discuss between the person they are in the scene with how the scene should be played. I just remember thinking "isn't that what the director is for"?

Because of the fast pace of soaps, directors have always had limited time to work with actors.

I remember reading recently(can't recall where or what show)that rehearsal time had been cut back due to budget cuts and actors received little direction apart from basic instructions.

In reference to an earlier post,Wendy Riche handed over Port Charles to Carruthers becuse she did not have the time to devote to both shows.

Do all EP'S routinely oversee the taping on a daily basis or is it an individual thing?

In an article on Gloria Monty in GH's glory days, there was a reference to her coming on stage during taping and overriding decisions that had been made in her absence earlier in the day.
