Characters who shouldn't have died

Dixie on All My Children. One of the biggest mistakes AMC ever did, and I hope they regret it. Absolutely no reason to kill off Dixie. None.

Al on OLTL & Courtney on GH are also ones I think we're a mistake.

Maureen Bauer on GL is the OBVIOUS choice. They spent years grooming and making the character the true successor to Bert Bauer, GL's premiere matriarch. However, unlucky for us fans, Jill Hitler Phelps was EP of GL at that time and didn't realize the significance Mo had on GL and its long-term history, so she had the character killed off.

While I read this all the time and understand it, I don't think you can give one character that much power, unless you definitely want the show's matriarch to be a Bauer. After seeing clips of Vanessa jumping into action during Mo's memorial, I think she should have been groomed as the heir to that role. And what would be more progressive than having a divorcee married to a younger man as an emotional anchor? Ed was a patriarch, but totally flawed. I think writers make a bold decision like this and then follow it up with bad ones that make us question the first move. Ed's stories were uneventful after Mo died, and then the family's place on the show was dismantled. But it didn't have to be that way because she died.

Bryant on As The World Turns - This character had major ties to two Oakdale Families and the storyline possibilities were endless.

Jake on As The World Turns - This made no sense at all! Move Tom Eplin from AW to ATWT, put him in a relationship with Molly, make all of us love them and then kill him off. Another BAD move.

While I totally agree about Jake because of the saga to find Bridget and Michelle and Lucinda finally getting a male playmate in the tradition of Craig or Kirk, I disagree about Bryant. Lucy has the same ties Bryant did, so not all is lost. If the writers concentrated on Craig having a life long vendetta against Jennifer when he died, you might have seen it differently. Instead he went on trying to bed Carly and Rosanna.

For my own choices, I'll add:

Neal, ATWT - Because Samantha couldn't hold a candle to her, as far as Lucinda's sisters went.

Dan and I had the Maureen talk...her death while the story was amazing her death was sad. Then again I wouldn't want my beloved Maureen running around Springfield sniffing amnesia gas...plus there is only one true Bauer on canvas now, so Mo would have prolly fell victim to a bad storyline and at least this way the story was good and she won her well deserved Emmy!

But maybe GL never would have taken the huge tumble it did if Maureen hadn't been killed off. I'm not saying that's the case, but I do wonder.

Surprised no one has mentioned Eve or karen on PC.

Eve shouldn't have died. I loved her and Ian. PC were idiots for killing Eve off and putting Ian with Lucy. It was gross and is probably what killed PC. Lucy and Kevin were PC's signature couple. Breaking them up was a mistake.

But that didn't happen until a couple years later when Jennifer was aged. She was all over Billy when Bryant died, but Craig didn't go after them. His motivation didn't seem related to Bryant at all when he wanted custody of Johnny.

I think that Cassie's death was okay...I don't think Camryn would have stayed much longer, she was only on recurring and it provided some good story for the time...so I'm fine with her death.

Margaret on OLTL.

She was finally being redeemed and was sane. Why the hell was it necessary for her to revert back to her psychotic ways and die?

Y&R

Phillip III (stupid attempt to create a Nina/Jill rivalry like Kay/Jill -- what a flop)

Cassandra Rawlings (Paul had an awesome story with her. Killed her off so that Brad could become really rich.)

Ryan (Wholly unnecessary. The character and actor were so well liked.)

ATWT

Jennifer III (Paul/Emily child, so much story lost for the future. Barbara/James/Susan genes in that kid.)

Rose (The trashier/better side of MB)

David

Carolyn

Macy (both times)

I agree with posters above that Dixie, Gillian and Simone from AMC shouldn't have died, but for me the worst death was Natalie. I know Kate Collins left and the re-cast, Melody Anderson, didn't 'click', but I wish they could have made Nat 'soap opera dead' (you know, no body found or something) instead of "DEAD dead".

Still not convinced Dixie is really dead for good. I'm sure they will lure Cady McLain back at some point.
