Gossip Girl: Discussion Thread

Guess who's back?

Batten down the hatches, Upper East Siders -- Hurricane Georgina is blowing back into town.

Sources confirm to me exclusively that Michelle Trachtenberg is reprising her role as Blake Lively's arch nemesis on Gossip Girl for multiple episodes.

A Gossip rep declined to comment, but my UES mole says Georgina, who was last seen being carted off to the Kimberly Shaw Correctional Institute for Psycho Bitches, will reappear toward the end of the season.

In related news, have you heard the rumor that Georgina will turn out to be Lily and Rufus' MIA love child? Crazy, right? Well, it's even crazier when you consider the fact that said love child is (spoiler alert!) ******** * **.

First asterisk quiz of the new year! Woo-hoo!

And I do NOT want Serena and Aaron together!

They broke up! Woohoo! I hope we don't see that greasy moustache again.

Not too sure about Dan/Serena getting back together already. They'll probably break up again when Serena finds out Dan kept the secret. <_<

Jenny's subplot was pointless once again.

Uncle Jack and Blair hooked up? I hope that wasn't what they were talking about. Gross.

Chuck: Dear old, dad? Fortunately, all know is what he didn't want.....which was me. I'M CHUCK BASS!......no one cares.

Blair: I do. Don't you understand, I'll always be here. I don't want you going any where. I couldn't bare it. So whatever you want to do to yourself, please don't do that to me. (She reaches out for him) Please.

Chuck grabs her hand and gets off the ledge.

Chuck: I'm sorry.

Blair: It's okay.

Chuck/Blair

If Rufus/Lily's kid is/was on the show....i have no idea who it could be! Don't spoil it. ;)

Deep Soap: Love In The Evening

By Sara A. Bibel

A Supercouple... OMFG

Finally, there is a rootable soap couple. They've got it all: believable internal and external obstacles, a well paced storyline that is equally character and plot driven. They're played by two talented actors who look great together. Wonder who I'm talking about? I'll give you a hint. They aren't in daytime. I've fallen head over heels for Gossip Girl's Chuck and Blair. They're the closest thing to an honest to God super couple on television right now. These two teens are written more like the classic couples then anyone who airs before eight PM.

For those of you not watching (and really, what's your excuse?) here's the quick and dirty lowdown. Blair, the fierce Queen Bee of an elite Manhattan prep school is devastated when she learns that her longtime boyfriend Nate cheated on her with her best friend. So, driven by both a thirst for revenge and her feelings of betrayal she slept with his bed friend Chuck. Chuck is the classic wounded bad boy with the best Smoldering Stare on the small screen. Of course, from that moment onwards the audience knew that the two of them were meant to be even if they didn't. Remember how All My Children's Leo and Greenlee kept hooking up even as they insisted they really wanted Becca and Ryan? Both characters are so afraid to be vulnerable to the other that they broke up for months because of their fear of saying, "I love you." It was utterly believable, if maddening to watch. That's character driven writing at its best.

Gossip Girl gets branded as irresponsible and immoral for portraying teens *gasp* having sex and drinking. In other words, behaving like many actual teenagers. But people who actually watch the show know that, like daytime soaps, there's a lot less actual sex than advertised. Chuck is the only character who has casual sex, the only habitual drug user. The other teen characters routinely condemn his behavior. Yes, Gossip Girl is deliberately provocative. Showing a character who is allegedly still in high school (although looks far older) making out with two women at once and lighting up a hash cigarette in front of his headmistress is taunting the FCC. But in context, it was a believable and heartbreaking portrayal of Chuck's attempts to deal with the death of his father by self-medicating. If a show is going to portray a character's downward spiral, make it genuinely disturbing instead of say, drinking having a college student drink two glasses of champagne on New Year's Eve. (Chuck Bass meets As The World Turns' Luke. The slash fiction possibilities are endless.)

Sexual tension's been largely MIA from daytime for a while. Apparently it packed up and moved to the UES. It's not just Chuck and Blair. The adults on the show have been starcrossed for decades. Their romantic past complicates the romance of their children. All of the major couples long to be together, but circumstances continually pull them apart. It almost seems like series creator Josh Schwartz has Douglas Marland's rules on his bulletin board and has figured out how to adapt them to 21st century primetime.

While many primetime shows, including Schwartz's The O.C. GG has upped its game, daring to tell deeper, more serious stories.I don't think it's a coincidence that it's one of the few series this season to improve its ratings. Killing off Chuck's father, Bart, unlike many deaths of older characters on daytime, actually drives story and impacts most of the characters on the canvas.

Watching Monday's episode, I realized that Chuck and Blair reminded me of my all time favorite soap couple Santa Barbara's Mason and Julia. Yeah, I went there. Ed Westwick's portrayal of Chuck as a deeply wounded young man who craves his father's approval and longs for his dead mother is how I envision Mason Capwell as a teenager. Blair is an unabashedly smart and ambitious female who is the mean girl version of Julia. When a drunk Chuck mocked Blair for finally admitting she loved him, I thought of all the times Mason lashed out as Julia when he was drinking. She later talked a thoroughly wasted Chuck off a ledge, literally saving him from himself, in one of the most poignant television scenes so far this season.

Blair and Chuck's relationship serves as a reminder that characters of any age can have depth. Their popularity with viewers proves that there is still an audience for character driven romance. Daytime, this is how you should be writing relationships. Why aren't you?

Nice to see Lily helping Chuck and him allowing her.. I love Dan and Serena but this Dan/Serena Lily/Rufus love thing they got going on is a bit too strange..especially when it's obvious that their child is alive and well.

Jenny really needs to get herself a love interest! Has she even had one besides Nate - I hate to count Asher, he was gay!

Please let Dan/Serena be broken up for at least this season! I hate the constant breaking up, getting back together, breaking up, back together, breaking up.

Kate French (Elle) Loved her on The L Word. I hope she'll be in more episodes.

Are Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz on crack? WTF happened to this show?

The Chuck stuff was so stupid, it doesn't deserve my time commenting on it. Though Kate French(who was in the My Network TV telenovella Wicked Wicked Games) is so effin hot! Still a crap actress though.

Nate and Vanessa, love em, but they are so useless. Same goes for Jennie, who still sucks ass. <_<

I'm done supporting Dan and Serena. I'm sick of them breaking up and then getting back together 3 episodes later. And I never want to see Dan getting self-righteous and smug with any Upper East siders ever again now that he's screwed his teacher.

Dorota is love

And lol at everyone going crazy when they had to give up their cell phones.

I watched GG for the first time yesterday, and watched an episode online to catch up.

Has Chuck always been so WEIRD? Is he even the age of the rest of the people? He doesn't even seem connected to them. I first I thought he was funny with his strange attitude, but then I got tired of it.

I'm not Chuck's #1 fan, but I guess I understand his mysterious appeal..

Nate and Blair though? How random.

They are all described as teenagers, but they act like they are 30. Do you know anyone similar to Chuck? I don't. Blair? Nope. Serena? Nope. Dan & Jenny? Maybe.

That's the main problem of this show IMO.

As for the acting, I like Kelly Rutherford (since her MP days, actually), Jessica Sozhr (Vanessa) and Leighton Meester (Blair). Blake Lively is OK. But the others.. omg... acting lessons...NOW.

They "act older" because they are part of NY high society.

Dan and Jenny are suppose to be "more like us" because they're not rich.

But if you've grew up in high society, you would probably relate more to Chuck/Blair/Serena/Nate.

Chuck and Vanessa are hot. No wonder they're dating in real life.

Not feeling Blair and Nate too much. Really forced.

Wonder what type of trouble Serena will be getting into.

"Tell Jesus that the bitch is back"

 So happy to have Georgina on the show! Too bad MT's pilot got picked up, I wanted her to stay on next season as a series regular.

Chuck & Blair :(

Nate, Dan, & Rufus have gotten so annoying  I'm sick of all their self-righteous attitudes

Haha at Poppy getting away with the money and Serena getting arrested(at least she looked hot in her mug shot)!
