Variety: PASSIONS Heads to DirecTv

Wow, that sounds VERY encouraging! Hopefully Liza stays with the show. I think this suggests she would.

To those who think the actors wouldn't, I refer back to Rebecca Budig (haha, I know, but still)'s classic quote: that she stayed in soaps because it was a steady paycheck, and frankly (at the time) she didn't want the grand fame of moviestars.

I think many "Passions" actors could feel the same way. After all, nothing's really changing for them, right? For those that keep their jobs, I mean. Just the venue it's airing on. They still go to the same studio, earn a decent paycheck (certainly far more than the national median income) and have some laughs.

Honestly, if they stayed with it on NBC for THIS long, they're not the kind of people who bolt and look for bigger and more flashy things.

But the common soap staple is the all important Friday Cliffhanger. Soaps thrive on that! Soaps rely on being there for the audience through it all, no matter what. Without the all-important Friday Cliffhanger, where does that leave the industry?!

I like my soaps five days a week.

Oh and to answer the SOD question, I highly doubt SOD is gonna do coverage of PASSIONS as a cabler. Hell, it may make the show more interesting without spoilers.

ANd I'll disagree with you, bellcurve, for the reason that unlike some shows that don't get coverage from SOD, "Passions" already has had coverage, and steady doses. Fans will be LIVID and will send tons of hate mail if they discontinued coverage. I just don't see that happening. Especially if this is the new business model for soaps. I think SOD would support it because um, without any soaps, they go out of business! lol. They'll cover "Passions."

I'm sorry, WHO knocked this thread down to four stars?!

Um, this is HUGE news for not just "Passions," but all soaps. And it's already 10 pages long.

THIS DESERVES five stars.

I already gave up my rating, sadly, so please, I implore you, each and every one of you, PLEASE give this thread its deserving five stars.

Thanks.

I don't know why I haven't subscribed to DirectTV sooner. After looking at their website, it's actually cheaper than cable and I get about 40 more channels. DirectTV's "Choice Extra" has 117 program channels and 68 XM radio channels all for 45 bucks a month.

I'm paying right at 100 bucks for cable and high speed internet through Sudden Link and I don't get Chiller, Logo, IFC, Sleuth, BBC America and tons of others because it's on a different teir and you have to pay 20 bucks more per month. With DirecTV those are all included in the package. Plus I get a free portable DVD player and DVR. I'm calling DirecTV!

This has been a paid advertisement for DirecTV.

If this were DAYS, *MAYBE*, but this is PASSIONS we're talking about. The show is only available to certain people with DirecTV...to the true fans that don't have DirecTV and won't pay for it, it's almost like that SOUTH PARK episode where Cartman has a TV ad for his new theme park. And the best part? "You can't come in!" Who is gonna really wanna subscribe to DirecTV JUST to get PASSIONS?!

That's the problem SOD runs into. It's no longer on Network TV, how can they possibly feature news stories about PASSIONS if it is only available to a small population of the network audience?! Why would NBC want to pay someone to do network coverage of PASSIONS on a miniscule promo budget?! Better yet, if the show is exclusively available to DirecTV, why would DirecTV want SOD to get scoops, spoilers, and synopses of a show that is only available for their network? Isn't that what their website is for?!

I mean, I do admit, this is a victory for you die-hard PASSIONS enthusiasts...I just don't see a major soap magazine even bothering to cover the show anymore.

I can't believe EVERYTHING on network television is ending on a cliffhanger. Regardless of the move to DirecTV, Reilly probably would have ended it all on a cliffhanger.

i disagree. i do think PSS will still get coverage in soap magazines. because first and formost, it IS a soap opera. and has a following and they cover it now. second, i do see what your saying but they are obviously gonna cover Night Shift, it will only air on SOAPNET and thats not aval to everyone either.

Whether Passions got picked up or not, did anyone REALLY expect JER to give TRUE resolution? I sure wasn't expecting it. Hoping for it, but wasn't expecting it.

And I love the latest article posted. "More than covers"? WOW. And it IS a test for the future. I could easily see shows that may not be cutting it on a network end up on The 101.

Sorry to burst your bubble there JERSF that's not a special deal JUST for "Passions" fans, as much as the people at Directv would like people to think it is. If you look at Directv's site, you'll see that the "Passions Special" is what they are offering ALL New Customers.....

Passions continues to buck the odds, so I think it will continue to receive coverage in soap magazines. DirecTV needs to do promotion somehow, and I do think there will continue to be online deals and more 'Tabloid Truths' and 'Vendettas.' I would not surprise me if there is a 'Cliffhanger' site launched leading up to the final airing on NBC. Get current viewers hooked and then leave the reveal until the transition is made

DirecTV has "Passion" for NBC By Nellie Andreeva

Thu Apr 26, 2:14 AM ET

DirecTV is getting into the scripted series business for the first time with "Passions," the low-rated soap that will end its eight-year run on NBC in September.

The show will move to the satellite broadcaster's original programming channel, the 101, on September 17 -- 10 days after it wraps on NBC.

While continuing to produce "Passions" for NBC didn't make sense because of the show's low ratings, it works great for DirecTV, said Marc Graboff, president of the network's corporate sibling, NBC Universal Television, West Coast.

"The studio gets to continue to produce it, and its core audience of devoted fans gets to continue to watch it," he said.

NBC Universal TV has found a way to "produce the show effectively" by reducing the budget, accomplished mostly by going from five episodes a week on NBC to four on DirecTV.

While the majority of the cast and crew are expected to continue on the series, the revenue from DirecTV still "more than covers" the studio's costs, Graboff said.

What's more, the pact, a first between a major TV studio and a satellite provider on a scripted series, feels like a test deal for the future, he said.

"I can see shows that are too narrow for the broad network tent but make sense to continue on other platforms finding a future there," Graboff said.

Somethings really WRONG when fans are happy that actors are TRAPPED in their contracts. Guess what? They can leave if they want to. I mean really whats the worse thats going to happen to them if they don't fulfill the contract? They get sued right? I highly doubt they'll go to jail. If I were them I'd be willing to pay whatever I had to get out of that contract. Especially the actors with potential and who could easily find roles on the main soaps. But the bottom line is that I find it very sad how some you are so desperate that you actually want them to be forced into remaining on the show.

And yeah I don't agree with the people who are saying that the so called, "Die Hard Passions" fans are going to pay w/e monthly fee it is to watch Passions on DirectTV. Sorry but its just not going to happen. First off Direct TV does have a significant amount of subscribers but I'm guessiing a very small percentage of them watch Passions. 2nd the majority of Passions viewers are lil teen girls who are obsessed with the hunks on the show. Not the actual show itself or even any concept of storyline. They'll find another means to satisfy their need for waxed bodies and hot guys. They can be found on ALL soaps. It just happened to be Passions that made it a rule that they should have a shirtless guy EVERY SINGLE DAY at the very least. 3rd Direct TV does cost money. These young viewers and even younger adults like myself are not capable of making that kinda monetary committment to a show.

    • I recall @Chris B asking about this but here is an interview Sheri Anderson did with SOU back in the fall of ‘89: Here is an article that I think is interesting, it is an interview with Shery Anderson, screenwriter of the ninth season THE WRITE STUFF: FALCON CREST’S SHERI ANDERSON: FROM DAYS TO NIGHTTIME By Richard Spencer Soap Opera Update, 1989 : At a time when the success of nighttime soaps is shaky, Sheri Anderson, former headwriter for DAYS OF OUR UVES, ANOTHER WORLD, GUIDING LIGHT and GENERAL HOSPITAL, makes the jump to the evening format with some new ideas to help strenthen the CBS California vineyard based soap opera FALCON CREST. "FALCON CREST is going to have a differnet tone that it never had before," headwriter Sheri Anderson expiains. "The people that I am working with are kind of an interesting mix. The executive producer, Joel Sumow, did the first years of MIAMI VICE and THE EQUALIZER, Bob Cochran, a Harvard MBA,and Cyrus Nowrasteh, who has done a number of features, are story editors. I am co-porducer, with a history in daytime, so we are a real different mix. We all kind of balance each other out in different ways. I am sort of the emotional side (coming from daytime) and they are more the gritty side." A lack of focus is what Sheri attributes to FALCON CREST's problems the last few seasons. "No one , seemed to knwo that the characters' motivations were. Pilar was a real good example. No one seemed to know what she wanted. This season it is clear that Pilar wants Lance. That is really her dream and goal tokeep Lance. She will do anything to do that. She will be making some sacrifices thís season that really jeopardize her relationship with Lance." While Pilar's character may be strongly in place, Maggie's is not. How will the show restructure in light of Maggie's drowning? " We are not trying to replace her, but we are adding another kind of strong heroine character. That character is Laruren Daniels. She's very earthy; married to a construction worker. Lauren. is the sister of Michael Sharp, Gregory Harrison's new character. "Michael is an extremely powerful adversary to Richard Channing. He will be more cynical than Richard and less emotionally motivated. For Michael it is all power and money. The audience will be more sympathetic toward Richard. He will be going through hell," Sheri reveáis with doom in her voice, "...Paying for his past sins " The complete opposite of Richard or Michael's intensity is the the new character of Charlíe St. James."Charlie is every woman's foolish choice," Sheri character sketches. "He's kind of indescribable; charismatic, totally unpredictable, charming, unnervtng. He's coming in as a love interest for Emma. He will be the first man to make Emma feel like a woman. She's really not victimized by him...she’s addicted to him. Charlie's presence will make her a little less flakey this season." But Emma is not the only one in store for major personality changes, also in the categroy is Frank. "We arebringing back somebody from his past," Sheri reveals "there will be a great secret that will come to ight." Speaking of characters from the past, are there any Sheri would like to return? "Everyone is fond of Ana-Alicia in her original role. At this point we don't have any plans to bring her back because we have some other character that are going to take the forefront." And if one thing is going to remain the same, it will be what Sheri recognizes as the theme of FALCON CREST "Quest for control of Falcon Crest. We have people trying to take control, and they are all taking it for different reasons. Some are emotioanl, some are revenge, but they each have a different eason for which they want Falcon Crest. And that is really the pivotal center. It is very earthy." Keeping the core of lite show intact is not the only thing nighttime shows have to do to stay interesting and acording to Sheri"I din't think night time shows have kept paces with changes in the viewing audience," Sheri answers by analyzing what exactly is primetime soaps* problem. ln datyime, you do over the years the shows stay on, but you are adapting to what people are accepting:faster-paced, or slower, or addíng more comedy, depending on the audience, and what they are buying. I don't think some of these shows in primetime have done that "We are trying to make the show as much episodio as it is continuing. We are cutting down the number of scenes in each act to get the audience more involved. But some of the shows, and this happens in daytime al so, don’t let the characters really grow," Sheri certainly made chracters develop during her daytime career, but especially on DAYS OF OUR LIVES, which is the source for her favourite stories of her careen ”When Víctor carne to Salem and revealed tha the was really Bo’s father, it caused such a ripple effect for Kim, Shane, Román, Bo, Hope, Caroline and Sean. I also liked bringing Kayla back for Patch.” Having written for Kristian Alfonso' s Hope (DAYS) and now Pilar on FC, Sheri distínguishes between the two characters. "Pilar is a woman, but Hope was growing up. Hope was more innocent and Pilar is not Pilar has an intelligent strength where Hope did all the wrong things for all the right reasons." Pilar wíll be the only one retuming from her family, while Angela Channing’s appearances will be limited (per Jane Wyman's contract). "But Richard will be taking a very strong role which is very similar to Angela Angelad presence will be felt in every epísode/ Sheri informs. A lot of people complained about the women of FALCON CREST being wishy-washy They certainly aren't this season Sheri emphasizes. "Lauren will be strong, especially after her brother Michael steais Richard’s children and places them with her, Frnak’s step daughter will be very devious, indicateive of Kathleen Turner in “Body Heat” And Gregory Harrison is fabulous," Sheri reports with joy. "He is so different from his character on TRAPPER JOHN, M.D He is very similar to Michael Douglas in the film 'Wall Street'. FALCON CREST viewers will find a much richer textrae, getting away from the glamour and really going to substance and style." Sheri concludes, "it will be a show to watch, We are trying to bring in a new audience, and at the same time, respect our past audience."
    • Well, if he's had a series of mini-strokes along the way (which, IIRC, he did), then that influences things. I can say, from my experience of having had two full-blown strokes, that recovery periods were very, very different, both in terms of difficulty and length of time.
    • Whhhhhhhhhhhattttttttttttttttt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Was everybody out this weekend.
    • She did have a thing with him in the late '90s, before she inexplicably disappeared with no mention as to why, although I can't remember if they had sex.
    • I don't believe she did. She did sleep with Simon, believing he was a Spaulding.
    • -- If I ever get sick, please don't send me to Garland Memorial. That hospital is a YIKES. -- Soooo much activity around the main nurses' desk. Do they move dead people on a gurney past that desk, too? -- 8 months for Bill to recover from a "small stroke"? Uh....I don't think so. Is anyone researching this stuff? The hospital stuff is not coming off as realistic. -- It's good that Derek and Ashley are being integrated into other stories, but it's a real stretch to say Leslie was "stalking" Ashley. It makes Derek seem dumber than we already think he is. -- Ashley spends a lot of time having small talk while she's at work. -- Chelsea is embarrassing. Period. -- Tomas is supposed to pick up the slack for Bill, but he has time to have worthless conversations with Leslie? OK then. -- Kat is destroying the case against Leslie, but that's clearly the way to keep Leslie on the canvas.
    • 6-3   I almost let my system just delete the episode just like with B&B. I am now questioning if I should have. lol.   I just can't believe that Cole sat there and started to get sick and then only Victoria off and ran off and everyone basically went back to what they were doing at Nikki's birthday party. Cole was too much of a vet character for that. And now story back off-screen.   I did chuckle at how much Victor pay Kyle dust. And now Kyle with this deal and a promise to leave town if he hurts Claire. smh. As if Victor isn't going to make that happen.   It was lovely to see Ashley. And actually (misdressed and all) Abby.    And I liked Claire's dress.
    • Oh. That. I pretend that never happened.

I did think of another possibility. Did India ever sleep with Alan? They kind of toyed with pairing them up, but I'm not sure they ever became lovers.
    • While I do love the chaotic energy that is Kat vs Lesile, it is a bit extra. Sheltered, virginal Kat who plays it safe from her man to her wardrobe understands that Leslie is dangerous, but she's out here showing up everywhere and anywhere that Lesile is to be found and actively going to places where she is alone? I mean Kat doesn't even act a little afraid or intimidated by Leslie. Meanwhile, big Ole Derek out here begging for his and Ashley's life to Jacob.  As for Dani, I didn't see it that way. Dani and Bill were together for 30 years and shared a family. I believe there was real love there at one point. Bill is still an ass and Dani is still crazy, but realizing she may lose him and her daughter's may lose their dad definitely struck a chord.
