Good 'ole "DAYS"

One reason why JER did do Marlena was like you said he wanted something shocking. Everything with JER is for shock.

A problem with Ernesto though is that only long time viewers would have been "shocked". Because at the time, alot of the viewers were young people who had started in 2001 or people who started watching during JER's first time at Days. That was what the majority was made up of especially since it was after that Salem High mess.

But it would have made a good story if written correctly. Ernesto would have had motive, GOOD motive. For killing Doug, killing Maggie, killing Victor if it turned out that way, but I could not see him killing Tony or Roman(unless he didn't know John was NOT Roman), unless it was a way to cause greif for Bo and Hope.

But it certainly would have gotten my praise when it came to Victor. Ernesto was the perfect guy to kill/try to kill him, and Jan(even though Nicole made a deal with her to do it) just wasn't the right way to kill off Victor Kiriakis....I love Jan, but an unstable girl still living in her Highschool days killing a man as evil, strong, and powerful as him? No way.

The SSK was fine up until the Marlena reveal despite some plot holes (which is also when I feel Corday jumped in to interfere for the first time) and then it gradually went downhill. Doug's death was senseless and made no sense. First off, Bill and Susan were promised neither would be killed. Secondly, I read on here and many other boards that Tanya Boyd was out and then it all of a sudden became Doug. We also had uncertainly surrouding Victor's death. It was announced John Aniston was out but the mags could never seem to fish out what was going on with him. It took weeks just to get the fact that he was out confirmed. There just seemed to be so much in the way of changing gears and re-writes. I don't even think Alice's death was planned originally. Then, we had that controversial Celeste/Marlena scene where Marlena appears in a black hood and says "THAT EVERYONE IN SALEM IS GOING TO DIE." Well, that never happened and I have a feeling the story was going down a gothic path. It totally lost it's gothic feel once the island began. Everything got cartoonish and stupid around then and then even the island crap got changed and condenses due to fan backlash. That is why we got castle from hell.

I think Ernesto being the island mastermind would've been great because, like Larry's return in 2002, it would've been unexpected. Sure, the majority of fans wouldn't know him due to most fans being recent but none of them knew Larry. Days and B&C made sure they explained full well who he was to the audience and the story worked. If Days did that with Ernesto, the island story would've worked and I could see Ernesto pulling off the island scheme due to his illusionist reputation. Ernesto being behind it would've salvaged story but instead we got Tony as a whackjob and a sci-fi piece of crap.

If Days ever does a serial killer story again, it needs to be written and executed properly. Days has done some of daytime's best so I know if they do it right I can work. I just feel they should wait a little while longer as the SSK/island story made death a joke in Salem so you want to make things serious and ground the show a little more first before you do another mass murder story. The SSK's first 6 months were great but there were still alot of plot holes that never got resolved. The next few months after that were ok but the plot holes became more prevalent with time and by the time we got to the island part it was a mess.

It just seemed so obvious (and yet ridiculous enough for Reilly to be true).

Marlena poisoned at Caroline's wake was the first indication, to me.

And we all know how JER likes to use Marlena for his big, out-there stories. Possession, anyone? I just wasn't shocked at all at the end of that episode when the camera panned up to reveal Marlena holding the syringe.

Add me to the list of people who hated the Salem stalker Storyline.

The best and most emotional part for me was watching Maggie die. That was the best acting Days has produced in a while. It's too bad that they had to kill Maggie, to give their best actress (Suzanne Rogers) some meaty material.

Other than that, pure crap that ended up hurting the show in the long-run.

I loved this story. FINALLY a serial killer story where characters we actually cared about got killed, instead of lame-ass day players. THIS is how you do a serial killer story right! Now things went awry once Marlena woke up on the island, but I don't count that as the Salem Stalker storyline. That was the beginning of the Melaswen Adventure. The Salem Stalker and Melaswen Adventure, while one lead to the other, are two separate stories. The Salem Stalker story ended when Marlena took a dive off her penthouse balcony, which was followed by an epilogue/resolution that ended with her being buried alive. The Melaswen Adventure kicked off the same day when she found Alice in the fake Salem Place.

Actually, I thought that Marlena being the serial killer was too obvious for it to be true, given how Reilly loves to use her in his 'shock' plots (Possession!). Because of that, it surprised me that he actually went there with her again.

Of course, Thaao ruined the shock by spilling it all to overseas magazines, thus everyone knowing the truth over a month in advance.

    • In case it is of interest to anyone here, I have digital copies (computer files, mp4 etc.) of all of the episodes. And, besides having the files they are all up on my usual video hosting site, acct name: shallotpeel, channel it is in: Primetime Soaps and file names like  Flamingo Road S1E15 Hurricane Flamingo Road was a primetime soap on NBC by Lorimar Productions. 2 seasons. 1980-1982. Morgan Fairchild, Barbara Rush. Developed by Rita Lakin.
    • Arguably DAYS OF OUR LIVES has been brilliant lately & definitely was last week. But, here I am with nitpick & technicalities. This was the only misstep but it was just a stupid thing that should have been caught. Deidre Hall as Marlena has this one problematic line, "It didn't matter how many identities you had, I always knew exactly who you were, you were the man who saved my life." - Marlena, DAYS, 6-2-25 Unfortunately the flashback closest to it was when Marlena was on the phone, terrified because she thought he was Stefano. Yes, it's true that the line is not accurate. There were many times when she did not feel the way she is claiming because of whatever was going on in story with his 'retconned to hell & back' identity & origin story. Does it keep the whole week from being called excellent? Nope.

    • I decided this primetime soap deserved it's own thread as the Primetime soaps thread is very cluttered and why shouldn't NBC's Lorimar soap mot have a chance to shine? In doing a deeper dive into the second season ratings I was surprised to see that FR actually had an uptick in the ratings when NBC moved it to 9pm Tuesdays beginning March 82. I'd always assumed this move was a desperate one as NBC were running short of programming and had given up on the show, deciding to let the final episodes play out and be hammered by 3's Company  and CBS Movie. But the numbers paint a different story. In it's 10pm slot up against Hart to Hart, which regularly finished in the Top 20, FL premiered in 53rd place and placed in the 40's and 50's as the season continued. But come January 82 the numbers surged a little now moving into the 40's hitting #43 in Feb. Hart to Hart was #11 Then in March Bret Maverick was moved to 8pm with FR @9. First week 16th March FR #47 15.1/24 3's Company #3 Too Close for Comfort #5 CBS Movie #60 Not great but #2 in it's timeslot March 23 FR #44 15.6/25 3's Company #4 Too Close for Comfort #5 CBS Movie #33 So even with a stronger movie on CBS FR's numbers went up. March 30 FR #31 16.6/26 3's Company #9 Too Close for Comfort #5 CBS Movie #56 Best rating/position yet Tues April 6 pre empted Tues April 14 FR #36 16.0/26 3's Company #5 Too Close for Comfort #11 CBS Movie #59 Maintaining previous week's numbers Tues April 21 FR #33 15.6/24 3's Company #3 Too Close for Comfort #5 CBS Movie #60 Numbers down a little (reflecting general spring downturn) but best ranking of the season so far Tues April 28 FR #35 15.1/23 3's Company #9 Too Close for Comfort #6 CBS Movie #42 Tues May 4 FR #27 15.2/24 3's Company #5 Too Close for Comfort #4 CBS Movie #41 Season finale and highest position of the season. Looking at those numbers I wonder why NBC cancelled the show? They had very few hits and here was a show that was holding it's own and moving up in the rankings in a tougher timeslot. And being a serial, the storylines could continue to build the following season. And I'm sure the desirable W18-49 demo was good. Some might argue that CBS were shower weaker movies, but even so, soap viewers are pretty loyal. I guess Grant Tinker arrived at NBC and wanted a classier look but there was room for FR on the schedule. I mean, the following season Knight Rider,Powers of Matthew Star and the A Team arrived so there was still room for more populist fare. Flamingo could have stayed at 9pm-the replacement Gavilan bombed (surely FR would have done better} or moved back to 10pm. The following Jan NBC had a hit with A Team Tues 8pm. Had Flamingo followed it, it might have really taken off. As it was they tried Bare Essence, which flopped. Oh well,it was not to be...
    • Always, in every way, Cass/Wally/Felicia foundational to my viewing. And, I think if we look at the aftermath of the disastrous 90 minute show that we find too many pockets of some kind of lost time at the show plus way too much of change-ups in exec & writing leadership and of course we also reach the first time it becomes notable that NBC wants to get rid of the show so they can put a new soap they own in the timeslot.

    • And this came out as the "feud" and the media pushing the protests in Los Angeles got all the media attention. They know the press and the public will not care or can be manipulated into approving.
