GL's current's state

GL's entertaining most of the time, bordering mostly on camp. I don't like the fact the show has become unrecognizable, but then again, I don't think there is anything anyone can do to restore the show back to it's familiar self.

I agree with most people when they say that Ellen Wheeler saved GL. She definitely did save the show financially, and I see your point SteveFrame. Now I'm not so eager to jump on the "Fire Ellen Wheeler" band wagon. However I believe that while Wheeler is trying to desperately save the show, David Kreizman is is driving the show into the groud with his writing. DK had his good points, the latter part of 2004 was pure excellence for him to me as a viewer. However ever since then, the show has steadily gone downhill. Fist starting with the drawn out Phillip Spaulding murder mystery and making Alan the killer. Then onto Michelle and Cassie's baby switch, Michelle and Danny's reunion, then to Reva's Menopause (Great idea, bad execution), and Reva's cancer (Again great idea, bad execution.). I also forgot to add that he's destroyed quite a few characters while on GL, though I don't think he's reached the amount that Ellen Weston has destroyed.

I would like to see DK replaced, or demoted. DK did well with Lorraine Broderick at his side in 2004. I wouldn't mind her returning and getting more involved. I would also like to see the cast trimmed a bit, resulting in the writting off of Jeffrey and Ava.Those are the two characters I've come to dislike, or detest more under DK.

"David has good ideas in thought:"

I agree with Josh. Kreizman has some good storyline ideas (i.e. Roger's death, Who Shot Alan, Reva's menopause/breast cancer, Alan/Holly/Sebastian/Blake, hell, even Josh/Cassie/Reva was great in theory), but his execution is perhaps the worst I've ever seen. Never mind the budget cuts, his characterization is simplistic, bordering on cartoonish. The characters change personalities sometimes on a day-by-day basis (Beth, in particular). His pacing is all over the place and those damned "Inside the Light" episodes make it even worse.

The tone of the show is so mean-spirited that even the classic mantra in the open does nothing because it isn't reflected in the actual show. What I mean by mean-spirited is that everyone on the show are so despicable now. Even the Bauers are not safe because Rick was involved with Ross' death and later had an (off-screen) affair with Beth. The only ones unaffected are the sainted Coopers whose high-handedness makes them absolutely annoying. There's a difference between the Coopers and the Bauers folks. When Ed Bauer gives advice, it comes from experience. When the Coopers give advice, it comes from condescension lately. And I already hate Brian Gaskill's Dylan. I saw his opening scenes. Yuck-o-rama.

But I will say this, lest I be accused of being someone who wants the show "his way" all the time. I'm intrigued by Alan and Doris and I do like the whodunnit. I just hope it gets Beth out of Alan's orbit (which it doesn't look like). And Dinah and Mallet are always fun to watch. Bogue and Tognoni have amazing chemistry. The show, despite the cuts, still has one helluva cast that deserves the recognition it gets (save for one in particular, but he shall remain nameless (right Na'Vell?).

I used to religiously watch GL in the 90s but have ort of tuned out since they started showing it at 10 here in Miami. I dunno, it just doesn't feel like GL. I don't recognize many of the people or the town . The eps I've watched have been pretty good but that new Marina=horrible, Cassie=horribe, Lizzie=horrible. Though, if it were on at three I would NEVER watch that awful GH that's the only game in town at 3.

Yeah, Beth's yo-yo personality and motivations bother me as well but for some reason, she remains as one of the most entertaining and rootable characters on the show right now.

Speaking of budgets, GL would have soo much more money if - like someone mentioned earlier - they hacked characters like Ava and Jeffrey (actually, I don't mind Jeffrey that much). Possibly even Coop...

' The thing is no way will Ellen Wheeler ever axe DK, she adores him and she said it was the best thing she ever did in making him head writer. He has been head writer for close to three years now. I have to give props to Wheeler for delivering a show on such a limited budget. Her budget is so small it would kill you to see what she has been able to accomplish on such a low budget. Let's see if Y&R or other shows could function on this ridiciulously low budget. Have you noticed GL introduces less new characters and has a small cast is because of budget? The reason why Crystal Chappell is not seen as much has to do with her contract and budget. In 2005 when GL was renewed, it's licensing fee was cut by 50%. That is why Wheeler had to fire actors or put them on recurring. She has no choice or GL would have been cancelled.

GL is a little better, but DK still has to be let go. Things need to spiced up it's still too bland something is still missing. EW needs to use some of the money to bring Edmund, Phillip and Sebastian back. The show is missing true villans. Get Blake out of that coma and Holly needs to come out of hiding. There isn't enough 20 something girls or guys. Shane and Marah would be nice start. It would certainly keep Marina from looking so damn awkward being pushed into the 30 something crowd. Also the show is missing a signature !@#$%^&*] (Doris just ain't doing it for me) . It used to be Olivia, but she's been declawed. Amanda Spaulding needs to return. Ooh could u imagine Olivia vs Amanda it could be soooooo much fun.

It would just be nice to see. I miss Edmund and Phillip GL just isn't the same without them. Sebastian could have been the next chapter in the Thorpe Legacy but DK screwed that up. I'm sure they can find a suitable recast though.

EW has improved as EP, but she is still stuck on DK's knob and for that she loses major points.

I agree. GL really needs Phillip, Ross, Blake, Holly, and a really good b!tch back on the show. I realize the money's not there right now, but those are (among other things) what the show is really lacking right now.

    • Am I the only one who hates how this show treats Claire? She's a glorified extra This girl comes from stock the granddaughter of the shows 2 biggest supercouples and they treat her like she's a throw away. Her pop pop is dying/dead and her other grandpa is saved awoken from his coma, alive because of the selfless heroic actions of her maternal grandpa

There is no reason why she wouldn't be here to say goodbye. Olivia Rose isn't doing anything I bet she love to come back and say goodbye. I just don't understand the motivation & thought process when it comes to some decisions. This show is probably still salty about how they didn't succeed in trying to assassinate Claire, on the alter of her dicktimized bird brained aunt & her serial killer boyfriend/husband with the audience.  Also unless they're keeping it under wraps Sami not being back in time to say goodbye to John is a huge fumble. If it had to do with Ali availability then they should've pushed back the fallout of Johnny learning about his sperm donor raping his mother and the subsequent confrontation with Elvis & Sami to conceded with John's coma & death so Sami/Ali were here for it. It's just a huge piece missing from this. As much I hated Sami's overdramatic looney tunes treatment of John long after she was in her 30s, became a grandma, her & John had one of the best dynamic complex heartbreaking father/daughter relationship's on both daytime and the show. It would be full circle as John's end of watch nears, that Sami apologizes for her treatment of him & admits she does love him. He was just as much as a father to her as "Roman", in a impossible situation that turned everyone lives upside down(The 2 Romans, Roman Intitial Death, The Affair)through no fault of his own. How fitting if she called him dad one last time & how thankful she is for his unconditional support and love. He squeezes her hand one last time, calls her Samantha and finally let's go after hearing the words he spent decades longing for in my eyes
    • So around '84 is when things get bad?
    • There are details through the thread, but yes, as mentioned, she hated Ellen Wheeler, and lambasted her for crying a lot, for her decisions with firing and Peapack, etc. Back in the day she also hated Pam Long, who created Reva and gave Reva all of her best material. The producers or writers she liked most seemed to be those who saw Reva in the most generic of molds, although she likely doesn't see it that way. She was OK on OLTL; I think @Vee could probably give a better summary. She was earthy and added her usual hard work to some trash material. There was nothing special going on, as yet again with patron saint Carlivati it was all plot, no character, and he cared more about writing for a cutesy child character.  You're right about what they could have done with Reva. Reva, Erica, and any women who are in story long enough face this problem. The biggest difference is Reva was allowed to age (even with the post-menopausal baby), which Erica was not.
    • Cali was the only Paulina for me on AW.  Was Judi Evans such a “name” that Cali was fired for her?  Judi basically played an entirely different character.  She could’ve been Nancy!
    • They were great together. Barbara was way too high maintenance for any man. You know Henry divorced her a$$ after about a year.  And, here’s an example of what I was talking about…
    • I watch every day as well, and I am enjoying the show. There's always room for improvement. TBH, things are much different from what I expected reading the character breakdowns. That could be a good thing! I'm willing to let them find their groove and figure out what kind of show it wants to be. The core and underlying theme. -I echo what a few others have said: The show is lacking in real romance and cross-starred lovers. But that tracks from (MVJ) experience cause the bell soaps are not good with romance IMO. -I have a feeling it's being built before our eyes, but we're missing that rival family. -I would prefer more variety of storylines. Good ones that could weave together the whole town.   -I struggle connecting to the male characters. So I hope they get a clear handle on them soon. Most of them feel underwritten and one-note. -Find a better purpose for Naomi. I fear she will be the first Dupree dumped. I completely agree. June's story does nothing for me. And what if she turns out to be Tyrell and Samantha's mom? They are very close to leaving high school. why should I care? If she turns out to be related to Hayley also, what's the long-term story, and why should I care? I believe Hayley can work on her own as a vixen. Does she need a sounding board? Sure, but you can accomplish that with an outsider's friend group. I didn't think I would be saying this, but I would entertain Kat having a forbidden affair with Jacob. Both Naomi and Jacob need something to do other than case-of-the-month storylines.
    • That would really just be a redux of the Leslie/Eva story. I really hope they don't go there. My guess for the storyline with Anita that we have "never seen before on daytime" is that it may be a "me, too" story. Anita did unspeakable things to get ahead because of some disgusting producer, and the other person she left behind was a boyfriend who cared about her very much.
    • Reva and Zimmer needed strong adversaries/scene partners. It would dampen the negatives associated with the character and Zimmer's self-admitted excesses. I think that's why she was a bust on SB. I don't know how she did on her return to OLTL because I was not watching at that point. The problem for me with Reva is the same situation with Erica Kane. It ended up being variations of the same storyline year after year. I think if the show had truly broken up Reva and Josh and put them in other viable relationships it would have freed up the characters to have better storylines and character growth. Instead, it's as if the characters were stuck for decades.
    • I am still behind and know what upcoming week you are talking about.

And I know I'm not ready and have not been since the official news. That was my first couple on that show. You won't be alone.    When you put it like that...same. Like I say in the thread when I'm more interested in what people are wearing than the stories...red flag. No momentum. Just stalling.      lol.
