-1/3/66-1/31/66. Papa bows out of the New Year’s Eve party so he doesn’t have to see Bill, Maggie and Bert together. Ben, Maggie and Peggy return from the New Year’s Eve party at the Fletchers. Ben wants Maggie to marry him but Maggie doesn’t want to because she isn’t in love with him. Ben points out that Bill and Bert aren’t in love but they’re married. Maggie has a guilty look on her face. At the Bauers, Bert tries to get Bill to talk about what’s wrong in their marriage but they’re interrupted by Ed. Ed is happy to be back home and happy with both Bill and Bert. This will change soon. Mike has called and said that Julie is now an outpatient and seems to be getting better. This will also change soon. A suspicious and possessive Ben trades subtle aggression with a contemptuous and guilty Bill. Bert tries to get a guilt-ridden Bill to discuss what’s wrong in their marriage. Ben tries to convince Paul and George that he’s a changed man. Everyone is worried about Papa’s health because of his strange behavior so he goes to Bruce for a check up and confesses to Bruce why he’s upset. Bill and Maggie are having lunch together and talking about whether or not to come public with their affair. Bert walks into the restaurant and sees Bill with his hand on Maggie’s and leaves the restaurant in shock. Ed and Meta catch up in the hospital cafeteria. Bert, in shock over witnessing Bill and Maggie together in the restaurant, comes home to another shock as she receives word that Julie has committed suicide. Meta comes over to Bert’s and Bert tells her about Julie but not about what happened with Bill. Paul, Robin and Johnny have dinner with Ben, Maggie and Peggy at Ben’s restaurant. Ben tells Paul that he’s no longer a bum and is going to make good. Paul begins to suspect there’s something going on with Bill and Maggie. Ben is determined to win Maggie back. Paul discusses his suspicions of Bill and Maggie with George. Bert tells Paul about Julie’s death. Papa and Bruce talk about Bill and Maggie. Bill has told Papa and Papa has told Bruce but he makes Bruce promise not to tell Meta and Bert. Bert gives Bill the news about Julie when he comes home from work but doesn’t tell him she saw him and Maggie together at lunch. Robin and Jane talk about Julie’s death and Bert’s mysterious pull-out of her trip with Bill. Robin asks Johnny to clean his ever-filthy room but he leaves before he does. Robin goes to clean the room for Johnny and falls off a step-ladder while she’s trying to put his books in a closet. A surprised Ed learns that Bert is canceling her trip with Bill. After her fall, Robin tries to hide her physical discomfort from Jane and Paul as she doesn’t want Paul to get mad at Johnny for the accident.
-2/1/66-2/28/66. Ben continues to annoy Maggie with his persistence that they be together. Maggie is relieved Bert is no longer going on the trip with Bill but tells Bill he needs to decide what he wants to do while he’s in NYC because she can’t go on the way it’s been. Ed is confused as to why Bert doesn’t want to go with Bill on the trip. Meta wonders what’s wrong with Bert. Papa and Bruce stay tight-lipped. Ed tries to talk Bert into going on the trip. Robin gets Jane to go along with her lie that she fell in the kitchen, not Johnny’s room. The obstetrician comes over to examine Robin and says he can’t find the fetal heartbeat. Bill and Papa get into an argument. Bill is upset that Papa talked to Maggie. Papa tells Bill to act like a man and Bill tells Papa to stop meddling. Bert tells a shocked Papa that she knows about Bill and Maggie. Robin loses her baby and is rushed into surgery to save her life. A depressed Bert gets new vigor when Papa Bauer encourages her to fight for her husband. Ben eavesdrops and his suspicions about Bill and Maggie are confirmed. Ben confronts Maggie with the truth later in the car and their argument leads to a car accident.
-3/1/66-3/31/66. Ben, in and out of consciousness, involuntarily mutters about Maggie and Bill’s affair with Ed in the room. An angry Ed confronts a shocked Bill with his knowledge. Bill is pained by Ed’s bitterness. Leslie Jackson’s first episode. Ed and Leslie have an abrasive first meeting. Ben tells Bill he can have Maggie but, if he does, he’s going to try and get custody of Peggy. Bill tells Maggie that he can’t marry her and must end it with her for the sake of Bert and Ed. Ed is surprised to learn that Leslie, the girl he’s been sparring with, is the daughter of the surgeon he wanted to study under. A broken and defeated Bill tells Papa he broke things off with Maggie and that he has no right to happiness if it means hurting others. Ben steals a love letter Maggie wrote to Bill and blackmails her into marrying him or he’ll sue for custody of Peggy. Leslie meets Papa Bauer. Ed, bitter and disillusioned by his father, tells Papa he’s through with people and only concentrating on his career from now on. Robin leaves the hospital but is depressed and her bitterness towards Johnny has set in.
-4/1/66-4/29/66. Maggie consults George and tells him about her affair with Bill and Ben’s blackmail. Ed continues to be cynical and bitter. Leslie asks Ed on their first date and Leslie talks about how she was always alone because her mother died in childbirth and her father never had time for her due to his career. Ed says she was better off alone than with a family to be disillusioned by. After an unpleasant meeting with Ben, George tells Maggie that there’s nothing he can do to keep Ben from sharing the letter with Peggy and it lies on her to decide whether to marry Ben or not. When Ed stands up Leslie on her dinner invitation in order to accept her father’s lecture invitation, Ed lays his cards on the table with her and says his career is the most important thing to him. Everyone starts to notice Robin’s coldness towards Johnny, especially Johnny. Bert has had enough of the limbo she and Bill are in and demands that he be upfront with her about what he wants. A defeated Maggie agrees to marry Ben but in name only.
-5/2/66-5/31/66. George tells Papa he’s worried that a depressed Bill is headed for a nervous breakdown. A business associate takes Bill to dinner and tempts him to take a drink, breaking his long run of sobriety. Robin treats Johnny meanly as she blames him for losing her baby. Ed tells Leslie he never wants to get married and then tells her about his parents. Bill is officially off the wagon and Bert learns that Bill is drinking again. Jane gives birth to a girl and names her Heidi. Leslie meets Bill when he goes to see Ed for help. Ed hatefully shames and rejects Bill which crushes him and drives him to the bar. Dr. Jackson gives Ed preferential treatment in hopes of getting Leslie off his hands and this is noticed by Jackson’s jealous resident, Dr. Joe Werner. Meta finds out about Bill and goes to him to encourage him to try with Bert. Bill says there’s no hope and now he’s lost Ed. Meta reminds Bill that she knows what it’s like to lose a son but where Chuckie is dead, Ed is still alive and there’s hope still. Papa is upset that Meta told Bill that Bert knows about Maggie, fearing it will make him want to drink more. Heidi is now called Amy. A gloating Ben and a reluctant and depressed Maggie get married. A bitter Robin says she doesn’t care about Johnny anymore.
-6/1/66-6/30/66. A sympathetic Leslie defends Ed’s father to Ed and a hero-worshiping Ed defends Leslie’s father to Leslie. Robin is cold to Henry as well as Johnny. Bert and Leslie both try to get Ed to be more tolerant and forgiving to his father. Robin tells Johnny the truth that she fell cleaning up his messy room, not in the kitchen. Johnny feels guilty for being responsible for Robin’s miscarriage. Leslie laments about her father to Ed. A drunk Bill laments about his son Ed to Bert. Ed and Leslie eat at Cedars’ cafeteria. Ed talks about how he hates his father. Bert calls him home. Once home, Bert lays into Ed for being mean to Bill and gives her famous “You’ll never be fit to shine his boots” speech. Meta tells Bert that she and Bruce are moving to New York and they discuss Bill falling off the wagon. Ben goes looking for Maggie and finds Bill drinking. Ben is suspicious of Maggie and tells her Bill’s drinking again. Robin resents Johnny for her miscarriage. Johnny feels guilty. Ben and Maggie try to hide their discord from Peggy. Ben tries to keep Peggy away from Johnny. Paul is worried about Johnny. Papa encourages Bert to visit Jane and Amy. Maggie is visiting Jane and she and Bert have an awkward meeting. Bert and Maggie have a confrontation about Maggie and Bill’s affair. Johnny’s graduation party. Johnny wants to move out because of Robin. Ben forbids Peggy to see Johnny. Bill is getting in trouble at work. Papa and Bill argue about Papa moving away. Ed finds favor with Dr. Stephen Jackson. Joe Werner is jealous.
-7/1/66-7/29/66. Ed shames and ridicules Bill when he comes home drunk and Bert comes to Bill’s defense. Joe tries to date Leslie as he competes with Ed. Johnny and Peggy’s innocence starts to be encroached upon by reality. Johnny tells Peggy he’s in love with her and Ben keeps running interference in the budding romance. Paul is angry with Robin because he thinks she’s running Johnny out of their home. Bert enlists the help of Paul but Bill shoots down his attempts. Ed is over the moon when Dr. Jackson makes him his first resident in surgery. Paul tries to get Ed to help Bill but he’s met with opposition until Paul mentions that Ed’s career could be affected by his selfishness. Ed gets similar advice from Stephen but only takes it to heart because of his hero worship. Johnny and Peggy try to see each other. Robin tells an angry Jane that she told Johnny how she lost the baby. Johnny tells Paul he wants to be a doctor. Bert and a hungover Bill argue over Papa. Leslie urges Ed to go easy on Bill. Bert Bauer meets Leslie Jackson for the first time. George and Jane discuss Johnny’s situation. Ben tries to control Maggie and Peggy. Paul begs Robin to try to persuade Johnny to stay. Bert consults Paul about Bill’s drinking problem.
-8/1/66-8/31/66. Johnny starts to catch on to Ben but Peggy is still wearing her rose-colored glasses. Upon overhearing a fight between Ben and Maggie, Peggy starts to wake up a little. Johnny asks Peggy to marry him. Joe tries to come between Ed and Leslie. Peggy’s innocence is shattered when she learns the truth about everything from a drunken Bill. Peggy confronts Maggie, calls her a tramp and says she hates her. Johnny asks Peggy to marry him. Johnny moves out. Tension between Paul and Robin about Johnny moving out. Ed finds Bill drunk in a bar. Ed brings a drunk Bill home. Papa Bauer is back home from visiting Meta and tells Ed he’s got his own apartment. Paul talks to Johnny about his future. Peggy confronts Ben about what she overheard. Peggy tries to talk Maggie into going to Banff. Peggy says she’ll go over to Bill’s office to pick up something for Maggie and George. Paul Fletcher visits with Papa Bauer in his new apartment. Ed goes over to Bill’s office to confront him about Papa. Bill ties one on in his office after his fight with Ed. Johnny and Leslie talk about Bill’s drinking problem. Peggy walks in on a drunk Bill and he mistakes her for Maggie. Bert and Ed argue about Bill. Peggy’s innocence is shattered when she learns the truth about everything from a drunken Bill. Peggy confronts Maggie, calls her a tramp and says she hates her. An upset Peggy runs to Johnny.
-9/1/66-9/30/66. Maggie thinks Bert is the one who told Peggy everything to get revenge on her. Johnny and Peggy discuss their mutual loss of innocence before they get married at the justice of the peace across state lines. Before they can get married, Peggy is struck by a hit and run driver and they take her to Cedars. Maggie verbally attacks Bert, thinking she’s responsible for Peggy’s accident. Ed tells Bill that Bill was the one who told Peggy everything in his drunken stupor. Bill remembers that it was Peggy that he thought was Maggie and confesses that he was the one who told Peggy everything. Johnny mistakenly thinks Peggy has died and runs off. Scripts.
-10/3/66-10/31/66. Paul and Robin fight about Johnny. Paul blames her for Johnny’s disappearance and Robin accuses him of loving Johnny more than her. Robin later tells Papa Bauer that Paul loves Johnny more than her because he is Anne’s flesh and blood and Paul loves Anne more than her. Johnny winds up at the Benedict mansion in San Francisco and learns that Henry is away in Europe. Bill and Bert reconcile. Peggy’s back surgery is successful. Stephen tries to play matchmaker with Ed and Leslie but Leslie wants to break up with Ed because he doesn’t believe in marriage. Joe seizes the opportunity to make a move on Leslie. Robin tells a shocked Jane that she doesn’t think Paul ever really loved her and just married her because he was lonely. Bill worries that he’s ruined Ed for life because of his actions and Ed tells Leslie he’ll never forgive Bill. Leslie continues to work on Ed even though he’s cynical against marriage and tells her he loves kids too much to ever bring them into this world. Bert and Leslie get chummy and Bert goes to work with her matchmaking, trying to change Ed’s worldview. Scripts.
-11/1/66-12/2/66. Bill rejoins AA. Ben gets increasingly jealous of Johnny and tries to make sure he doesn’t marry Peggy as planned. Bill asks Papa for forgiveness. Peggy sees the sham her home was before and tells Ben and Maggie she doesn’t want to go back there. Ben gloats that Maggie has lost Peggy and she’s his now. Martha encourages Leslie to give Ed an ultimatum of marriage or the end of the relationship and it backfires on Leslie. Stephen and Bert meet and soon start to conspire to get Ed and Leslie married. Joe makes his move learning of Ed and Leslie’s break up and Leslie accepts his offer. Scripts.
-12/5/66-12/30/66. Peggy’s back has healed and she’s getting ready to be released from the hospital but doesn’t want to go back to live with Maggie. Bill’s worried because his boss is coming to town to meet with him. Bert brings him optimism but Ed brings him pessimism. Leslie tries hard to forget Ed but she is heartbroken. The fear of losing his job tempts Bill to drink but he fights it. Maggie pleads with Peggy to forgive her and then decides to move out for Peggy’s sake. Bill loses his job. He breaks the news to Bert. Paul, Robin, George, Jane and Johnny celebrate Christmas at the Fletchers. Papa, Bill, Bert and Ed celebrate at the Bauers. Joe asks Leslie out on a date and she accepts. Robin doesn’t think she’ll ever get over losing her baby. Ed reaches out in a rare moment of affection towards Bill who is looking hard for a new job.
