January 4, 200718 yr Member Or could it be that those that feel that way are simply intimidated by Oprah? Not intimidated. Nauseated. I still laugh when I remember how she claimed to have "given" those new cars to her audience when really they were donated by the car company.
January 4, 200718 yr Member I don't think Oprah is racist, but she does put her foot in her mouth at times by saying things.....While what she said below in a recent Newsweek interview is true somewhat, it's kind of ironic coming from one of the richest people who recently admitted on air that she hadn't pumped her own gas since the 80's...... "Say what you will about the American educational system—it does work," she says. "If you are a child in the United States, you can get an education." And she doesn't think that American students—who, unlike Africans, go to school free of charge—appreciate what they have. "I became so frustrated with visiting inner-city schools that I just stopped going. The sense that you need to learn just isn't there," she says. "If you ask the kids what they want or need, they will say an iPod or some sneakers. In South Africa, they don't ask for money or toys. They ask for uniforms so they can go to school." January 4, 200718 yr Member I heard about that today on the radio and I think she's just frustrated. She is this public figure with alot of money and she puts herself out there to help. She's had alot of bad experiences with going out to help kids with their education and all they seem to care about is when am I gonna get an Xbox or iPod? Whats' it like to talk to Beyonce and Jay-Z. To her, they are coming across as ungrateful and arent appreciating the oppurtunity presented in front of them. Whereas with children in developing countries seem to have more of a hunger and appreciation for the value of education. The mentality is different . Its her money and she can do without as she pleases. She cant please or help everyone, but at least she is doing something unselfish and if she didnt put this school out there, then those children in Africa most likely would have been ignored. I say congratulations to Oprah
January 4, 200718 yr Member ^^Yet, right there, she's criticizing inner-city youth which comprise mostly of minorities. Yet, she's racist?

January 4, 200718 yr Member I don't think Opera is a racist at all, never have and probably never will.
January 4, 200718 yr Member What does that supposed to mean ? All these little "racist" threads get old after a while and only seem to stir up controversy, thats what I mean. And it just seems that people just like hearing themselves talk or like the attention.

January 4, 200718 yr Member Sorry, but I think you're just trying to avoid an ongoing issue in our society. I kid. Luv ya Marylin I was about to say WTF?
January 4, 200718 yr Member I never said that she was racist I just mean she needs to watch what she says.
January 4, 200718 yr Member I never said that she was racist I just mean she needs to watch what she says. Oh I wasn't referring to you at all, just the thread in general. I just don't want to see yet another fight break out because whenever the issue of race gets brought up here, 90% of the time it doesn't go down smoothly. Yes, it is an issue that needs to be dealt with, but I'm tired of the fighting that goes along with it.
January 4, 200718 yr Member ^^ITA with you. We don't need another thread like that. And I don't think Oprah is racist at all IMO.
