Since you named the lead actors, I'd go a step further and say the following 5 are the gals most worthy of this year's spots IMO:

Kristian Alfonso, Maura West, Sharon Case, Kim Zimmer, and Nancy Lee Grahn. To me, those are the five ladies who have given the most fully realized performances of the year.

I agree with those 5 esp. Alfonso & Zimmer. There is still alot of buzz around Flannery even though I don't really see it this year, but so many keep saying for the Felicia death stuff. I know when Michael Bruno named his top 3 early contenders he said Alfonso, Zimmer, and Flannery.

But I would absolutely love to see a panel of Alfonso, West, Case, Zimmer and Grahn. I think the early leader right now is Zimmer though. Alfonso should win though, but Zimmer story has just given her so much more to work with. If she submits last Friday's episode alone Zimmer could win it. Zimmer has always been so over the top many times to me, but last Friday she was so subdued and the performance had so many layers.

Cannot STAND Zimmer. I thought she was taking her overrated self off anyways. Hmph.

As far as the voting process goes, it's always seemed to me that the easiest way to even the playing field would be equal representation on the voting panels from each network. That way it is weighted properly. I'd even go so far as to say that when determining the panelists from CBS, they are split evenly between the Bell & P&G contingents. The solution seems so simple to me, why can't they see it? I'm seriously becoming aware that people are so anti-mathematics that when simple mathematics can be used to solve a real-life problem, they don't even bother looking for a solution in that direction. Sorry- RANT.

The lead actor race- I couldn't agree more with the 5 basically everyone has stated:

Bergman, Braeden, Reckell, Knight, and Geary. But of those, the only one that I think is a lock is Peter Bergman. The others could all be ignored in favor of dark horses Thorsten Kaye, Michael Park, Robert Newman, Maurice Benard, and Trevor St John. I'd say Braeden & Reckell are particularly vulnerable, given their history with the Emmys.

WORD!!

Except I would probably take out Sharon Case and put in Susan Flannery, her work during the cancer storyline was OUTSTANDING and rivaled the best of the year. IMO Alfonso was the most heartbreaking, her performance IMO perfectly mirrored the way a real mother would react and grieve for her child. This was Alfonso's best work of her entire career and IMO the best acting a DAYS actress has produced since Eileen Davidson's powerful work in 1997. For me she has never really stepped it up in the past, and proved she is among the best, but this year she truly did that she PROVED that she is definetly not just another pretty face. She has good work in her past with the Princess Gina Storyline to prove that this is not just a fluke, Alfonso DESERVES to be up there just as much as Nancy Lee Grahn or Kim Zimmer or whoever is nominated this year.

I wholeheartedly agree. Make no mistake- I was skeptical of whether Kristian could even pull it off. I didn't think she pulled off the baby switch storyline or the Princess Gina storyline at the level of other actresses (Renee Jones/Tamara Clatterbuck in the baby story, Eileen Davidson, Martha Byrne, Anne Heche, Ellen Wheeler are some examples of better dual role actresses), but she was totally raw in the episodes. I can't put my finger on which one I was most impressed by, but I do remember it wasn't when he first died..... it was either before or shortly after. She has proven herself to be more than worthy this year. I definitely could see Flannery getting a nomination, but I'm going more by the body of work than particular episodes. Susan was phenom very early in the year with the cancer stuff, but hasn't really had much to do since.

To add, there is just something about Sharon's performance I like this year. Though I thought she was good last year with the Cassie stuff, I felt Josh Morrow was stronger. But when Sharon is bitter, vindictive, or enraged, Case just nails it. Remember, the last time she won for Supporting Actress, she won for the icy performance she gave when she caught Nick in bed with Grace. I truly believe she should submit the lingerie episode for the Pre-Noms. There was something so provocative about that performance. A lesser actress wouldn't have made the acting choices that she did. I thought the whole thing was brilliant and reminiscent of another Sharon, of Basic Instinct fame.

Ok, in no particular order, here are my Top 10 performances for the year (that I can recall):

Kate Collins(AMC) - The cabin scenes in March - the prison/mental ward scenes in April.

Alexa Havins(AMC) - The cabin scenes in March.

Michael E. Knight(AMC) - Seeing Dixie in April - Madden murder trial in October.

Dan Gauthier(OLTL) - breakup scenes with Kelly.

Greg Vaughan(GH) - pushing Liz/breakup; being high on drugs.

Kristian Alfonso(DAYS) - Aftermath of Max's death.

Kelley Mennighan Hensley(ATWT) - Going insane with Dusty; attempting suicide.

Julie Marie Berman(GH) - All things abortion.

Van Hansis(ATWT) - Coming out to his parents.

Jacob Young(AMC) - Holding Krystal hostage in March, seeing Dixie in April, showing remorse to almost killing Kendall in May.

**I didn't watch enough of Y&R/GL/B&B/PSNS this year to make a solid case for any of their performers, although I have seen promos lately of GL's Kim Zimmer and I was impressed.

Honorable Mentions:

Thorsten Kaye(AMC) - Wonderful stuff after Mardi Gras explosion/Ethan's death; Kendall's coma.

Alicia Minshew(AMC) - All things coma in May (her best stuff).

Cady McClain(AMC) - Her return storyline sucked, but her peformances have been dead-on.

Susan Lucci(AMC) - Episode with Jack when she talked about Greg violating her - outstanding! Also when she went to confess to Kendall about Josh being her son.

Maura West(ATWT) - Breakup scenes with Jack.

Elizabeth Herbst(GH) - Breakup stuff with Lucky.

Peter Reckell(DAYS) - Aftermath of Max's death.

Heather Tom(OLTL) - After tornado - Duke's death - breakup with Kevin.

Nancy Lee Grahn(GH) - All things cancer.

Terri Ivens(AMC) - Ethan's death; funeral in March.

Martha Madison(DAYS) - Hospital scenes with new Shawn/Phillip in October.

I am sure there are plenty I'm forgetting - but all these performances stuck out in my mind!
