CBS Evening News W/Katie Couric

I wrote that in the O'Donnell thread earlier, before I saw Katie on the Evening News tonight. But now that I've seen her, I have a little bit of an opinion.

I still think she's all wrong for the Evening News. And the retooling of the format(Free Speech Tuesdays & Thursdays; Snapshots) isn't great either.

I like the re-do of the theme music. Very magestic and news-like.

She can't be judged on one day alone. A major event(like an Election or national tragedy/disaster) will determine how I officially feel about her.

All I know is that is MISS Bob Sheiffer. That old coot made the Evening News worth watching.

Awe...a thread my very own.

Okay yeah, I'm not feeling the new features either. However, I can see where CBS is coming from hoping to pull in a younger demographic. That said, I think Katie was very well spoken, very professional and I think she showed, for a lack of a better word, good RANGE as compared to what we've seen her doing from the last 15 years you know.

So for the first day "on the job" it wasn't bad. I like her and when I do watch the evening news, it is CBS, hell I grew with Dan Rather.

She did OK, although she needs to bring her voice up a bit.

I don't mind seeing her on the Evening News, but I hate how she's intruded into 60 Minutes.

-Anyone catch Nightly News with Brian Williams? "I wish good luck to Katie Couric, debuting today on this timeslot. Limited luck"

First of all, I hope to clear up some confusion I've seen in this and other threads. It's actually Bob Schieffer, not Bob Scheffer. ;)

As a personal opinion, I liked the new format. It made the news EASY to watch, and frankly, there is NO more boring newscast than the network nightly news. All the war stories and the complicated names. It's just boring. For that reason, I appreciate CBS's aim of 'dumbing down' the news, for lack of a better word.

Katie had a few bloopers where she mispronounced words or hesitated, but over all, I enjoyed her.

And yes, I am SO watching again tomorrow. Crazy as it is, I really think this newscast could be Must See TV (on a different network), just to LOOK at Katie.

Yeah, I wasn't sure how to spell his last name. I'm horrible at spellings. I just knew that it didn't look right, but w/e. I'm still upset that he's no longer an anchor, even though he's going to be a "special" correspondent. Still, I'm glad that the network finally put a woman in the front seat. It will make things a lot more interesting IMO.

One thing I do like is that now it's going to make CBS stand out from ABC and NBC. For a long time, it felt like the 3 shows were just all the same. There was nothing that really differentiated them.

I still think that Katie is better than Brian Williams. There's something about him that I really don't like.

That's okay, bellcurve. No harm, no foul. :)

That resolved, I agree about the aversion to Brian Williams. For me, it's not BRIAN HIMSELF that bothers me. It has more to do with the fact that I just do NOT believe that's the way he really talks. He looks a certain way that precludes him from talking that way. He's just using a VERY obnoxious, VERY boring "voice of God" approach, when um, hello, that one is going out of style, as evidenced by the need for Our Savior, Katie.

Get with it, Bri, STOP faking.

I liked the music. I really loved the change of graphics. The ones they had before were dull because they basically only used one color which was blue. The set is even better than before. I love the overall feel of the telecast. I'm going out on a limb but I like the new "Free Speech" segment. It's a breathe of fresh air to the genre. For once I was excited and anticipating the news, and for once the Evening News left me with a good feeling.

So I guess I'm going to watch tomorrow.

I love that voice!!!!!!

He seems serious, yet he can poke fun at himself.

A few weeks ago he read an email froma viewer who claimed he/she was so distraught by Brian's horrible outfit one evening she turned to ABC!

Forgot to say, I don't like Katie moving around the set so much. Reclining on the desk seemed unprofessional.

    • Randy (Doug's friend who works for Joey) -- Joey told Randy weeks ago that Joey's plan was to get Doug into so much debt that Doug would be forced to get Vanessa's real estate holding turned over to Joey, to use for money-laundering.  That's been the plan all along, which the viewers knew.  The only thing new is that Joey finally told Doug this. I think Joey is written badly.  I also think Jon Lindstrom is doing "Now I am going to act menacing".   But I don't really feel the menace.  It's too overdramatic and it doesn't feel like a real person.  Jon is a fine actor on GH, so I don't know what's happening here -- the entire BTG mobster premise is badly designed/written.  I don't know if Guza pushed for a mobster storyline?  Or did Jon?  (Jon wrote a novel about Hollywood mobsters). It just doesn't fit.  It feels (to me) like this storyline for Jon was just shoved onto the canvas but it doesn't fit all all. Monday's scene of Mona coming into the "casino" to check up on where Leslie supposedly lost money in the slot machines -- and Randy explaining to Mona that there are no slot machines, there is nothing but the card room.  I had to laugh because they had characters comment that it's just a card room and not a casino -- the show is now acknowledging that there's nothing there.  If they are going to do this, then have it make sense for Fairmont Crest residents to visit a high-end glamourous casino, and not a random room with one table. So what money is Joey laundering? A while back, Joey told Vanessa that he knows about her sexual philandering because owns the escort service that she'd been using. But I don't care...  I'd just prefer that the entire mobster storyline go away.
    • I caught up this past weekend. The show is better written, but I have been bored with the show. I did notice it ranked in the top 5 again this week, so that's a good sign.
    • I can't take this show seriously. I truly miss WJB writing this show. Bradley didn't inherit his dad's talent.
    • Maybe if there had been a good close up or two
    • I haven't had a chance to view the interview, but I'm glad Mike didn't get the part of Derek.  Derek is a badly written character. Any Ben Gavin screenshot from yesterday's show?
    • Wait, what? So, Martin’s not running for President anymore? Just like that?  I didn’t expect this storyline to be long term but I would’ve liked to see it play out for a little while longer, or at least until Martin’s secret was revealed. And definitely not fade out with a whimper. Sort of like Naomi’s lawsuit against Bill’s firm; what was the point of it all if it was just gonna wrapped up so easily and (probably) forgotten about?  Eva is still the breakout character though. I’m looking forward to seeing where she goes from here with everyone, especially if the twist that we’re all suspecting turns out to be true.  And I did find the gambling storyline interesting finally, now that we know Joey’s endgame. I’d like to see it play out and to see what happens to everybody involved in it.  As for Derek/Ashley… I wonder how it would’ve played out if they actually had cast Mike Manning as Derek. Yeah, the writing isn’t there but I imagine that Derek would have more of a personality lol and I also imagine that it would’ve made Ron Carlivati’s head explode
