Casey got some play in the 80's but after that she was pretty much forgotten. Some guest shots would have been nice when Nikki was going through her many traumas/weddings.

Why not have Snapper encounter April at the free clinic? What was Chris doing at this time-stay at home mom? A natural story would have been for Chris to want a career ,which Snapper supported but in practice created difficulties. Have Chris work at Jabot (not as a model) and be successful, encounter new people etc and have Snapper be put out that she is no longer as available to him as before.

Things did get muddied with cast changes, leaves etc. But straying from what was working was an issue. From what I saw of Bond she had potential as Jill. If she had have stayed in the Derek/Katherine/Suzanne sphere then viewers might have been easier to accept her. As stated, mixing her in with JackJohn and Steve - all new characters was a wrong move. It probably disappointed viewers who had been following the Jill/Derek story to have them quickly say their goodbyes and move on. Surely Bill could have come up with another twist. Instead he had Derek in the Chancellor workplace story. It was odd that Derek, who had lived and dreamed the Golden Comb, gave up the tight white outfit for a suit and tie, Chancellor had never been part of the story and there was now all sorts of corporate intrigue that hadn't been apart of Y&R. And Derek and Suzanne pretty much faded away. Why not bring in his son Jamie to be a part of a teen story with Patty? And having Brock as a romantic lead was also jarring. He had always been a supporting character to Kay, Jill, Les etc It's interesting that Bell claims to have had a change of heart re Victor due to EB performance and then write the dungeon story that painted Victor as a psycho that led to Michael and Julia being dropped to try and rehab Victor so he could stay around. The Stu/Eve/Liz story went nowhere nor the plot point that Derek and Eve had a prior relationship. There really was a lot of chopping and changing. It looks like Wes Kenney kind of read the riot act to Bill about the show floundering and he got it together. We saw the departure of Cash, April,Barbara, Dorothy, Wayne, Snapper, Sally, Lance, Lorie,Jonas, Karen Andy and Jill split and she re-engaged with the Abbotts. Paul went undercover. Victor/Nikki continued The only new story that bombed was Leslie/Robert/Angela and that was wrapped up by the end of the year.

Well the Abbott family is pretty much gone with Traci and Ashley popping in from time to time. Abby is an Abbott in name only. What made the Abbotts strong was having Jabot integral to the story and it no longer exists. The problem with the Newmans has been the lack of evolution of the characters. Back to the expansion, the clumping of the Williams and Abbotts together always makes it seem they came on at the same time, whereas in reality the Williams were the major new family in the new format and Jack and John were minor characters, with John eventually dropped. The real format change came in 82 with the intro of the Abbotts and the dropping of the final remnants of the Brooks and Fosters. Bill Bell's approach with the expansion seemed to be the dismantling of the couples/stories at the time and using those characters to propel new couples and stories. With Lance gone, Lorie was moved to Michael, then Robert and Victor, Leslie with Jonas and Lucas with Casey and Karen. Jill/Derek was dropped. Nikki/Greg split etc. There were probably too many changes too quickly.

Alex Marshall Days. He went from general menace to a more misunderstood anti hero destined to reignite love flames with Marie and make happy family with Jessica . Then the Horton connection was dropped and Alex went back to assistant bad guy to various villians and comedy relief before getting arrested and never heard of again. An 8 year stint.

This is interesting to me as the only cast members who left were Brenda Dickson (Jill) and John McCook (Lance). Everyone else stayed on. David Hasselhoff went recurring? Was Lynne Topping put on recurring because of this? Pam Peters (Peggy) was brought back. So it was hardly a cast decimation. More like business as usual. Kay Alden has spoken about the expansion time and said it was very stressful. I think some of the turmoil was brought about by Bill's reluctance and resistance to the 1 hour format. It's not as though Y&R was the first show to expand- other shows had moved to 60 min quite smoothly.

Understood. There really needs to be some other storylines. A proper story for Faith/Moses. Some hospital/relationship intrigue for Nate/Elena. These characters are relatively new to the canvas and not burdened with years of backstory like many others. Seeing Jack/Phyllis round 2745 holds little interest at this point.

There are hardly any secrets to be revealed.

The worst offenders in terms of clothing are Nikki,Lauren, Abby, Sally and sometimes Sharon. and Phyllis. Lots of overly tight, cheap looking fabrics, unflattering colors, metallics. So it is a style choice for these characters. as Amanda and Lily usually look decent in more subdued and elegant looks - but no-one is immune. Is it just me or does anyone think those characters present well? Obviously the clothing budget has been cut and they are using cheaper items but just like in real life a clever eye can elevate the look. Are the men wearing their own clothes? Nick, Devon, Ray are dressed basically. Devon should be in hip casual/streetwear but its just chain store looking Tees and jeans. Adam looks awful in the baggy black outfits. Only Nate and ashland present well. The hair and makeup is off. Is this COVID related? Are they spending minimum time interacting with hair/makeup, if at all? As for the lighting, again maybe the budget means less time is allowed to adjust the lighting and they are employing fewer people ? There has to be some reason for the tatty looking show.

I'm pretty sure that for flashbacks an actor gets a full episode payment, hence why we often only see a flashback if those actors are also in that episode, so will be paid anyway. If it's an actor no longer on the show, either in flashback or photo I'm not sure how that works. And if say Tom and Alice are shown, is there a payment involved and who would be the recipient?

WTH is going on with lighting/hair/makeup/clothing? Nikki in a bold stripe blouse with a snakeskin belt? In what fashion universe does that worK? Jack suddenly looks years older-his skin looks way more blotchy. Nikki has prominent eye bags. Phyllis cleavage was spotty. If you're over 40 on this show, don't expect any help from the production team.

Chance so far is not making much of an impression. But MO is hardly the pro to help him lift his game. He does look younger than her. Thank the Lord Jill is back. Jess needs to stay around and become an active part of the show. She can elevate the crummiest of stories.

Dorothy Green spoke out about the writing of Y&R women over 40. I think that was before Jen bit the dust. Retaliation on Bill's part? Well they were either doormats(Liz) or neurotics desperate for validation from men. No confident businesswomen in that group. Was Dina, despite her conniving, the first more positive portrayal? Maybe not as it said she had to desert her family to achieve that success. I guess Jill grew into that role and later Ashley.

Y&R was popular in australia in terms of daytime soaps but it's afternoon timeslot precluded it from becoming a household name. also it was pre-empted over Summer due to sports coverage (cricket) so viewers on vacation never got the chance to get into it. B&B on the other hand aired at 4.30pm which meant it was available to way more viewers-school kids/college students and workers who were home by that time. It also aired year round.

Traci is going to write a book about Dina's life in Paris. Nina is going to write articles for Chance.Com Faith and Moses go on dates. Lily had to go to LA to help Mattie. Gloria is going to run some division of Fenmores. Imani and Amanda are going into business together. Jack has no home or place of business and spends his days at Society, Crimson Lights and Grim Funnel. There are no other people living in GC.

Ellen was hard done by. They didn't bring back her daughters, especially Dee who still had story potential, with only one marriage under her belt. Unlike Annie who had 3 marriages and 4 children'. Any or all of Ellen's quad grandkids could have been SORASED but no dice. He fell for her when he had amnesia and was calling himself Donald Saunders. Ellen was made frumpy to be believable as the mother of Sorased Dan. I think John Colenback was only a couple of years younger than Pat Bruder.

Good point as this summary from 1965 hints at that Don reestablishes his on-again/off-again romance with Ellen, but Ellen is close to accepting David's wedding proposal. David/Ellen was the biggest wedding the show had ever done so the writing must have leaned towards Ellen romancing Don b/c she felt she didn't deserve David after all she'd been through. She and Don had always been close. This is something that could have been used in later years as Ellen comforts Don over Joyce for example and David gets jealous. Instead David and Ellen became tentpoles. Ellen was even dropped at one point in 75.

Edge could have gone to 4pm on CBS instead of switching to ABC. I wonder if that was considered?
