@janea4old Your reminisces remind us of a different era. As you say, no outside info unless you went searching, just immersing yourself in the 'story'. However, that is still the case for a lot of viewers today. Here we are online discussing this, that and the other while there are thousands of viewers who tune in for whatever show, watch, enjoy and that's it. The vast majority really.

I meant it was the first time they went on location to tape a series of sequences. I remember the brief scene of Steve and Carolee and the helicopter but missed the Sara park scene.

Ratings From the 90's
Days had a very specific vibe happening at that time and AW was a completely different type of show. Had AW been able to come up with a hot story or couple, they might have attracted some Days viewers. Also, by that time Days had been outrating AW for years so viewers were conditioned to switching off.

I believe there was some BTS stuff that went down at OLTL that saw Quinlan fired. I remember Doris Belack left over ABCs refusal to give her a pay rise. It seemed odd that Kathy Glass also left as she seemed popular. Anyway Glass was already at TD when Quinlan arrived. Only Belack and Pinkerton were Quinlan hires. Not sure about James Storm. That remote was TD's first.

Edge of Night (EON) (No spoilers please)
Thanks @DRW50 for the extra info and reminding me of that website. Dennis' life story would make for an interesting TV series - from porn star to soap star and everything else that went with it...

Edge of Night (EON) (No spoilers please)
Variety reported June 79 that Dennis Parker (Derek) tested for a leading role in 'Can't Stop the Music' at that point titled 'Discoland Where The Music Never Stops' Parker was involved with Jacques Morali, who was behind the Village People and produced Dennis' album 'Like An Eagle' So maybe Jacques pushed for Dennis to get an audition? Seems likely.

One of many problems with the show. There's obviously the belief that what worked 20 - 30 years ago has to be used today. Or the 60 plus viewer might switch off.

Beach Patrol ABC aired as a TV movie May 79. 4 police officers keep the peace at a stretch of California beaches. Starring Robin Strand (Keith Timmons temp on Santa Barbara) Jonathan Frakes (ex The Doctors) Richard Hill (who went to Days in 81)and Christine DeLisle( later Pam Warren on Y&R) ABC decided to go with a similar show -240 Robert- in it's Fall schedule.

ALL: Who do you think would be a good writer for the remaining soaps?
Sorry but the Rosales were a dud. The idea was fine, the execution not so much. PS Y&R is MINE- I will however be agreeable to having some consultants on board-no promises that your ideas will be accepted.

BTG: History, Behind the Scenes Articles & Photos
Came across this article detailing a new daily soap that premiered in Spain earlier this year. It's a period piece, examining current issues through a vintage lens. Includes regular location work. Interesting in light of the upcoming debut of The Gates. If Spain can successfully produce something of this scope, surely CBS could look at this and other models as inspiration https://dramaquarterly.com/sweet-dreams/ Some highlights Why was Antena 3 interested in launching a new soap? Even with the rise of streaming platforms bringing so much choice to viewers, daily drama continues to work well on linear TV. This kind of programme builds audience loyalty and guarantees a high-performing slot for the broadcasting channel. This trend has influenced all of Spain’s main television stations to produce a series with daily episodes, to safeguard their audiences. Why might a new soap still be of interest in the modern age of streaming television? The way people watch TV has changed: whereas families used to gather in the living room once a week to watch an episode of their favourite series, now it is more about the individual viewer deciding how, when and where they watch something. This has encouraged binge-watching, where instead of leisurely watching a series across the span of a month, viewers are able to finish an entire season in a single afternoon. The broadcasting of a series showing daily episodes guarantees there will always be something new to watch – which is why this format fits in well with the new way of watching TV. How do you balance studio scenes with those filmed on location? The series is mainly recorded at our film studios in Madrid and in two fixed locations in Toledo and El Escorial. Several scenes are filmed in the De la Reina household and factory where, depending on the storyline and shooting schedule, we combine studio sets, exterior locations in Toledo and filming on the streets of Madrid and Toledo.

Thanks for that. Seems odd that she stayed in the credits for so long. Especially as Conner Floyd was out immediately. Somebody was asleep at the wheel.

Primetime ratings from the 70's
ABC -TV rolled up one of its biggest weekly wins in the primetime ratings for the week of March 12 -18, 1979, while NBC -TV turned in one of the lowest scores in recent memory. The averages: ABC -TV, 22.2 rating and 36.7 share; CBS -TV, 17.7 and 29.2 and NBC -TV, 13.6 and 22.5. ABC reached its highest nightly score of the week and CBS and NBC tumbled to their lowest on Tuesday, when ABC's Three's Company scored a 38.5 rating and 58 share to reach 28,680,000 homes per average minute, said by ABC to be the most ever for a series episode. Immediately after Three's Company the debut of The Ropers got a 36.0/55, which ABC claimed was the second highest rating ever for a series premiere, outscored only by Mayberry RFD's 36.3/52 on CBS on Sept. 23, 1968. And immediately after The Ropers, the Barbara Walters Special, an interview with John Wayne, turned in a 27.0/47, the highest rating in the history of that series. And at the beginning of the evening, Happy Days got a 33.0/51 and Laverne and Shirley a 35.4/53. It all added up to a 32.8/52.1 night for ABC. Against it, a CBS News special report, "In Search of Peace," had a 7.7 rating and 12 share, and the CBS movie, a rerun of "Zorro," drew a 13.1/21, leaving CBS with an 11.3/17.7 for the night. Meanwhile, on NBC, Cliffhangers came in with a 14.2/22 and Checkerboard Flag or Crash managed only a 9.1/15, leaving NBC with a 10.8/17.4 for the evening. The premiere of Harris & Co. on NBC Thursday evening had a weak 8.0/12 against Mork and Mindy's 32.3/50 and Angie's 27.4/42 on ABC and The Waltons' 17.5/27 on CBS. CBS's new Dukes of Hazzard continued to show strength, producing a 22.2/39,but its Mary Tyler Moore show dropped to a 26 share and Just Friends to a 28. Among other new shows, NBC's Supertrain, Mrs. Columbo and Brothers and Sisters, CBS's Married: The First Year and ABC's Osmond Family Show and Making' It all ranked 55 or lower in the week's field of 68 programs. At the top of the list, ABC had the first seven and CBS the next three

The Pilot Thread
The whole pilot process seemed an enormous waste of time, talent and money. Networks would commission 30 plus pilots each and only a handful would be bought and then most were cancelled quickly. There had to be a better way, but nobody wanted to rock the boat. Look at Fall 79 in the midst of the Fred Silverman era at NBC The shows that made it to air Lobo-a BJ & the Bear spinoff Buck Rogers - apparently it had been in the works for years Shirley -only because P&G were financing it Man Called Sloane- Silverman contacted Quinn Martin to resurrect an idea from years before. So not one of the scores of pilots NBC commissioned even made it to air.

Not comparable really but I was just reading an article where Kia in Australia is promoting a new model coming in Jan 25 to coincide with the Australian Open Tennis (which they sponsor) The article showed the teaser -a quick 15 second grab with various 'characters' making the announcement. So all you need is someone in the target audience onscreen saying 'The Gates is coming to CBS daytime in January -it'll be worth the wait'

Despite Adam saving babies from burning buildings he's never forgiven for his crimes but Victor gets a free pass everytime. Couldn't Adam just start his own successful business and be done with the Newmans? Just recyling the same stories for years on end. And now Victor v Jack is being revived because Jack helped his beloved Nikki. Huh??

Another World Discussion Thread
I'm sure the gay reveal would have been months into Michael's introduction as Lemay stated they wanted the audience to like and sympathize with the character. Audience would be given hints and assume he had some typical soap secret eg an affair with a married woman (he didn't know!) or impregnating a fellow student etc. So any hints that did make it to scripts would have been vague eg John-I'd really like to see my son married and a father-after all that's a man's job in this world. Pat - Michael has always been such a sensitive boy etc
