Tank Jobs and Sabotage
Dolly Parton's 1987 variety show seemed sabotaged from the get go. Putting it Sun @9 seemed misguided. Having a terrible lead in with Spencer for Hire and knowing it would battle the strongest theatrical and TV movies on the opposition placed it on the back foot from Day 1. And having an unknown lead out with Buck James didn't help either. Wk 1 8pm CBS Murder She wrote #12 NBC Family Ties #11/ My Two Dads #19 ABC Spenser For Hire #60 9pm - 11pm CBS Movie The Law and Harry McGraw #48 NBC Movie The Terminator #30 ABC Dolly #5 Buck James # 27 Wk 2 8pm CBS MSW #9 NBC Family Ties # 10/My 2 dads # 16 ABC Spenser #55 9-11 CBS Movie #20 NBC Movie #17 ABC Dolly # 21 Buck James # 55 And from then on Dolly continued to slip. ABC shipped it off to Sat night to quietly expire. Perhaps Dolly should have aired Sun @8 with a movie @9? Although the 8pm competition was fierce. My other thought was the 2hr Disney movie Sun 7-9, Dolly @ 9 and Hotel @ 10. Slightly stronger leadin/lead out. Where else would you have placed Dolly on the schedule?

@FrenchFan thank you for supplying those 1962 eps. This clears up something else that was puzzling me. I was mistakenly proclaiming that Robin never married Alex Bowden, based on the fact that Robin was involved with Mike and Karl in 1959 and would go onto marry Mike. And then by 1964 was married to Paul. So she squeezed in a marriage to Alex along the way. In the 64/65 scripts, Alex and Robin have little to do with one another so I assume the marriage was short lived and didn't end well.

@Xanthe Mentioning LL as Dennis was only in terms of him being cast at that time and aligning more with Jim Poyner's Dennis , rather than any great love for the actor, Dennis was a sensitive type-growing up in the shadow of a domineering mother, having a heart condition etc .But upon returning in say 1986, he could have been cast and written differently. As for story, for fun, I wrote daily outlines for AW for that time period. I had Vicky and Dennis involved, causing Iris much angst. Vicky got pregnant by Jake who was trying to rebuild his marriage to Marley. So Vicky decided to have an abortion to solve the whole mess, but was in a car accident before she could do so and the pregnancy was discovered and Dennis of course believed he was the father. Much drama ensued!

No point in showing ATWT and GL as part of a CBS Daytime to Remember - it would just make viewers sad/annoyed they were dropped. What would be great to see is a properly curated look back at classic Y&R. eg the Katherine/Jill story with comments from Jess and other actors, fans, critics etc ,selected important scenes etc played out over one or 2 weeks, Similar 'mini series' dealing with Jack, Nikki etc

@kalbir If only the show had have kept to that timeline and not messed up the ages. Looking at Billy the other day, he looked almost as old as Jack.

OK My 2 cent about mid 80's AW -Commit to the Love and McKinnon families. Bring back Ben to mix it up with Marley/Vicky/Jake. No hooker story for MJ. No Cheryl. - Kathleen not killed off, simply breaks up with Cass offscreen. He returns alone and later a recast Kathleen or Julie Osburn returns, - A better telling of the Reg/Mary story, if at all. -Philece Sampler as Nicole, not Donna - Strengthen the Corys. Laurence Lau as Dennis. Try to get Bekins back as Jamie, a writer. Bring on Pam, Rachel's half sister. Nancy comes back. - Have the Matthews have some presence. Liz ,her grandson Ricky, Mike Randolph, Russ w/a daughter. -Keep Zane around for longer before the inevitable death. -No Mitch/Felicia. Maybe Mitch/Pam? -Keep Maisie and have her marry Vince as a new tentpole couple. -Build a family around Quinn by having Thom return, divorced. Have quinnget involved with a divorced/widowed father of teen kids. No need for Paulina, Cali Timmons and Judi Evans could be other characters.

Not sure how to classify this one: ABC Spenser for Hire. After a couple of well regarded but low rated seasons in various 10 o'clock timeslots, ABC moves it to the prime 8pm Sunday up against MSW and Family Ties. It was certainly counter programming but very odd nonetheless. Especially when ABC was launching Dolly @9. Of course, SFH provided no lead in numbers to Dolly and by mid season Dolly has flopped and SFH is sent back to 10 o'clock Saturday.

In other words the budget is so tight they're encouraging the actors to bring stuff from home. 'That coffee cup you saw at Society was part of a set I got as a wedding present' 'The laptop I'm using in work scenes at Crimson Lights was left in his room by my son when he went to college'

Diff'rent Strokes NBC/Webster ABC. Cute black orphan taken in by benevolent white family. The Fugitive ABC. 1963/Run For Your Life NBC 1965 Although the premise for each show was different The Fugitive had a man on the run from the law, and Run For Your Life had a man given a death sentence through illness, the similarity was that they moved all over the country encountering new people in new situations. The lead actors David Janssen and Ben Gazzara were similar laconic personality types.

I think that not giving these characters an exit was deliberate. The same happened for Doug and Julie. Giving them goodbye scenes would have alerted viewers that they would no longer be seen which might have annoyed them. Whereas just not seeing them, maybe the hope is that viewers wouldn't notice at first in the midst of all the stuff happening onscreen and keep watching. And then later realizing that they haven't been seen for weeks etc, but as viewers having 'moved on' In the case of Jed Allan, I think his contract was up, he was offered recurring, which he refused and had already taped his last scene so that was that. They chose not to mention Don had left town.

They could have stated that Marie got news that Jessica was pregnant and decided to be with her daughter during the pregnancy, thus giving the character a believable exit and setting up a future character, rather than having to invent one later. Even have Alice get a call when the baby is born, share the news and she and Tom visit offscreen. It's called nurturing the core family.

So millionaire (billionaire?) Victoria has to move to the Tacky house? Like there are no other options for her? As for mentioning Newman security, how many times has that inept team made a mess of things? Gee I wish that a) Josh Griffith is fired and b) Sony/CBS etc would pour some money into the show so that garbage like the above didn't happen. Nick has no house.Victor/Nikki have a room, millionaire Tucker lives in a hotel room-it's embarassing.

Laugh In revolutionized TV comedy with it's fast pace and edgire humor and was a smash for NBC. They quickly commissioned Soul, a black version from the same producers which aired as a pilot, but wasn't picked up. And ABC aired the infamous 'Turn On' which lasted one episode (and on some stations, not even that as local managers took it off the air during the show) ABC also aired "What's It All About World?' which had Laugh In influence but was short lived. CBS went a more traditional route with Hee Haw, a rural knock off which was a success.- Soaps that lost their original/core families
Y&R introduced the Williams as the new core working class family when the show went to an hour in 1980. Built around Paul, there was Carl, Mary,Patty, Steve and Todd (not seen) April married Paul and Heather was their child. Bit one by one they were dropped and a few years later it was back to Paul and Mary, Carl, Patty and Todd reappeared in short stints as did April but basically to play off Paul who finally disappeared himself. Heather is currently onscreen but she could pretty much be anybody.- Another World Discussion Thread
To have Neal suddenly appear as Mac's nephew was odd. as stated I don't believe there was any exploration of his history/connection to Mac,just a quick way to tie a newbie to established characters. As for Adam replacing Neal, there was a writer change and they probably decided to go with a 'hotter' actor. Lupone was definitely a character actor, not a leading man type. Surprised he was also cast as Tom Bergman on SFT. I guess this was the after effect of Tony Geary's success on GH. At that point, having Mac's grandson Dennis return would have been a more logical move. He was an established character with a history and connection to the show but had been away 5 years (maybe more in soap time) so there was an opportunity to modify the character a little if need be. The Dennis/Jamie friendship could be utilized -maybe a Jamie/Dennis/Vicky triangle?- Murder, She Wrote
