  1. What a fascinating discussion being had. Love it. You're right, they never talk about the creative decisions and poor writing but then they'd have to own up to recycling hacks and owning poor decisions ... so they blame external factors. Exactly: "how networks responded did" The soaps all seemed to shift in 1996 to young and pretty. AMC dumped a bunch of vets. ATWT had models everywhere. Like the early 80s, we were back in a "we need young pretty people and get rid of the ew old people". B&B/Y&R didn't suffer much because it still had Bill. Though I'd argue 1996/1997 weren't the strongest Bill years for Y&R but I'd take anything over the non-soap Y&R has become. We lost clever, smart writing (yes we still had clunkers) and got ... cliched writing that continues today. I know people say 'they were copying Reilly' which is certainly true to an extent, but he could at least structure a story. Sure everyone was dumb as bricks ...
  2. Is there a new vault link? Do I need permission? I'm so confused after catching up on the thread
  3. Welcome Jenny! I still have issues with the vault LOL. It works, then it doesn't. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.
  4. Bingo, nailed it
  5. Blah blah blah. Maybe he's grown up or his wifey is pushing it ... but I've never ever cared for him.
  6. For me, LOL, there'd be no point without her. It makes no sense to reboot the show in primetime and NOT have Susan Lucci starring. She was the face of ABC Daytime for 40 years. She BETTER be involved. LOL I understand they likely want to focus on younger ... but to not have Susan, Debbi and Eva starring as their characters would be a massive mistake. I wouldn't watch it. I'd give it a shot but I wouldn't be interested. And most wouldn't either, IMHO. If they want it to succeed they have to adopt the daytime drama for primetime. Otherwise it won't make it, mark my words. You HAVE to get Susan. And why WOULDN'T she participate?
  7. I stumbled upon some of that on YouTube (not sure now, as things have been taken down, sadly) and God, that was AWFUL trash. So bad.
  8. Pretty much sums it up.
  9. It actually is an interesting panel now. I'll give the show that. It's never interested me but I do like the current panel of hosts. I'm tired of The View honestly. Meghan is draining. It was so nice without her. It does seem a little 'too late' though for The Talk. It doesn't really get any buzz or have any traction it feels like. JMO.
  10. Wow. Damn. :( Prayers for Dustin. Cancer [!@#$%^&*] sucks. I'm so happy the show was renewed for a second season.
  11. Khan nailed it again. I do think some performers can still do a good job but like you said, it's all so rushed ...
  12. LOL wow! Maybe I should have bought a lottery ticket! Yikes. Corrie and EastEnders feel so hollow. It's really sad. These shows finally suffered from what the US soaps have suffered from for a long time. Sad. Even when they had bad periods they were still, IMO, better than the US soaps at times. Now? lol That's been my take. I like Bowden, actually, but he doesn't really feel like Ben to me. I can see this from what I've watched. I'd have to agree. I do like him though but something about it just isn't working. They have OK chemistry but they feel like buddies most of the time LOL
  13. I don't post much on here because I'm never current and always in and out of the show but I was starting to get back into a bit under Yorke. Not saying it was amazing but it was better than this plot driven shock value disaster.
  14. I feel like it would have to be pure [!@#$%^&*] to not get given the greenlight.
  15. I actually thought Tina was one of the most tolerable Carters (not necessarily a compliment when you look at the Carters). LOL. So of course they kill her. Really sad to see how far EastEnders has fallen. It really is a parody of itself, isn't it? The miserable Christmas and New Years has always turned me off. And add me to the list of those who think it's really sad the actor playing Jay is basically window dressing. Honey/Jay could actually have lots of layers, as icky as it is. A lot of these stories could actually be turned around. Jon Sen does seem to be a very bad influence. Not that Oates is any better, really. I haven't been impressed with her history on any show. And with the same producers hopping back and forth between HollyOaks, Emmerdle, Corrie and EastEnders, they've all become similar to each other. Dark. Plotty. Reminds me of Jill Farren Phelps and other US producers who turn their shows in to dark plotty messes. You could at least say it was produced well. EE isn't even produced well.
  16. They seem to be going for "buzzy" moments instead of really telling fully fleshed out stories. Hence why, as you said, This is Us has traction and a following. I've never bothered with the latter because it feels a bit try hard but that's good to hear. I liked Filthy Rich but like you said it blows through story and it's hard to invest in. Empire is a good example. The first season felt like it was actually planned out. It was, mostly, satisfying. Of course it all went to crap. These so called 'soaps' refuse to embrace they are a soap (as many others have accurately pointed out already). Like I said they seem to want 'buzzy' moments like other more popular shows and there's no real substance at the end of the day. (The new Dynasty is a perfect example) I expect "Pine Valley" to embrace being a soap but I still worry about the plotting, as Vee has well pointed out. The recent history of primetime soaps worries me but I remain hopeful.
  17. lWell, it's taken me some time to figure out what I think and what I feel about this. I'm still not sure. My mind is still kind of racing over it all. I love the idea of "rebooting" a daytime soap as a primetime version. It has SO much potential. It does sound like the 'right' people are behind it, though Ripa and Consuelous give me a bit of pause, but at least they are 'name' enough to help get it off the ground I suppose. They'd be really stupid not to have Susan Lucci and Eva LaRue starring. And I also agree they need to have SMG as Kendall. I love Minshew but SMG is name recognition, and she originated the role to huge fanfare. AMC has a LOT of past stars that became famous or well known, or at least had some success away from the show. They'd be stupid not to capitalize on that. They'd also be stupid not to focus it on Sam Grey. He's a Martin, a Cortlandt and a Santos. And of course you need Maddie if there's some Santos/Kane "feud" (that leaves me a little less interested, but it could have potential; I would love to see Maria and Erica going at it again). As a journalist, you'd be stupid not to find a way to tie in Tempo and Brooke English, who was of course married to Sam's adopted daddy Edmund. I could go on for days at the possibilities ... but I do have my expectations in check and am aware of this being it's "own thing", which is fine, but use what you have. Otherwise, what's the point? Oh, and another point, they could easily weave in other vets/characters should they so choose. Erica needs a friend: enter Opal and Jill Larson. If they use Sam, he needs a boss, who better than his former stepmother? Enter Brooke English. And Michael Nader was once a primetime Dynasty star and seems to have his issues in check. I wouldn't mind Dimitri. You'd have to mention him if it's a Kane/Santos feud, right? EDIT: They'd also be stupid not to have Debbi Morgan starring right alongside Susan and Eva. Then you can have Cornelius Smith Jr. back as Frankie ... See the potential? Will they use it? EDIT: I wonder if we see Chrishell Stause as Amanda again. She was just on Dancing with the Stars ...
  18. They really like her? Yikes. She's a very hollow producer. I remember reading a piece on her from like 2017 or 2018 where she was rambling on about how she liked big returns (it was for Corrie though and about Bet). It just read like one of our US producers or writers and how they talk a good game but usually don't deliver, etc. LOL. And wanted to add, RIP to Dame Barbara. Sigh. Yes, she did do an incredible job. I do think they became a parody of themselves as time wore on, sadly, but the early Mitchell stuff was great and different.
  19. Yeah, I wasn't a fan of the song remix. It grew on me though, but the original is just so iconic.
  20. I binged them all yesterday. I really enjoyed it. I like how they use the new kids from Douglas as the 'outsiders' to the world of Saved by the Bell in Bayside with the rich kids and it just works so well. You could tell it was made with love and care for the original. It found a way to make it bizarre, yet charming, timely, yet funny. Sharp dialogue. Witty nods to the past. I thought they did a great job. I loved Zack mentioning Tori. Kelly: "Who?" I thought Zack sometimes bordered on caricature/parody but it worked and we saw glimpses of Zack. Kelly seems a little lost but not a huge amount of time is spent on them. I liked Jessie, Slater, Zack and Kelly realized you can't necessarily go back again, lol, but they still found their spark again. It was a little odd having the Principal so shoved into the past but it was fun seeing the clips and was likely going for a deeper meaning. Lark Voorhies looked fabulous! It was so nice she made a cameo as Lisa. I didn't love it was wasted on shoehorning in the principal, but whatever. John Michael Higgins, I love him. But the whole shoehorning him into past clips as some deeper meaning or whatever was kinda bizarre. Was I alone in feeling that? But overall love him. Great moments and I like how he stood up to Marley from New Adventures of Old Christine and formed bonds with the kids. He fills the Screech/Belding spot nicely. They sure name dropped Screech a lot. Screech and Kevin are happily living away from Earth on the space station. Could you blame them? LOL. I like the growth of Slater. It's nice seeing Mario Lopez be likable again. Just saying. Jessie works perfectly as the guidance counselor and Berkley is doing a great job. I about died when Jessie grabbed the caffeine pills from Daisy and was using the fire extinguisher. They embrace the bizarre of original SBTB and it works. The new kids are really good finds, IMO. Daisy is Jessie 2.0. I love how Mac calls her buddy instantly. I like how they bring out different sides to each other. Mac is actually doing Zack Morris BETTER, IMHO. Lexi is greatly complex yet also ridiculous and at the same time you root for her. Trans representation ya'll. On SBTB. I love seeing it. I like that she's the female Zack/Mac. Not sure I'm all in on Lexi/Jamie but I like the complicated feelings and they have some nice chemistry. Jamie is simple and naive, yet not, at the same time. I wish we saw him a bit more with Jessie, however. He just felt a bit isolated from her considering Jessie is the school guidance counselor and bonding with his friends. I did like the scene of her unable to tell Jamie he sucks at football. LOL. Aisha being a female quarterback was a great idea. I love the gender bending. I kind of feel like they could do a bit better with her though. She has her moments but spends a lot of time with Jamie and Daisy. DeVante and his grandma and his friends. That's all. Love him. Love them. I loved the 'twist' of him not being a football player and instead going out for the school musical. It's really nice they aren't stereotyping. It's so refreshing, actually. I think they did a great job naturally pushing them all together as friends. None of them are caricatures and they actually have human sides. It's nice. This could have gone really wrong. I also appreciate the topics they tackle, in the SBTB way of course. I'll do some more indepth episodes thoughts. Just a general summarization of my thoughts. EDIT: And kudos to them bringing back Ed Alonzo as Max.
  21. I know. I popped in to this one right as he was clearly unaware. It's so awkward.
  22. 👍
