The seeds of 45's rise were sown long ago, but I admit I didn't see it. I kept thinking we were in the darkness before the dawn.

We are a very dangerous and unstable time. It's really odd to see how desensitized some people are to the corruption in Washington. I guess that happens when there is something insane happening multiple times a day.

I think we can hope that people who were complacent last time are motivated enough to vote this time too. Trump was right that some people will stick with him no matter what he does though. It's pretty astounding.

Like I've been saying for awhile, he's stupid and bad. Just look at how he keeps coming for Haiti. Somewhere in the 80's he heard the CDC's comments about Haiti being one of the four H's of AIDS. So here he is in 2018 saying all Haitians have AIDS and trying to keep them out of the US. His intellect is so crystallized that new information isn't able to permeate. I can't believe we are being led by this idiot. On that note, I'm thrilled that Conan O'Brian is in Haiti trying to counter 45's narrative.

^ You would think someone like AB would be close enough to celebrity to realize that unless you know someone well personally, you don't know them. I'm certainly disappointed when people I admire are shown to be predators, but ruined a dream? She needs to grow up STAT.

And this is the internet where people get to respond to your opinion. I wasn't snarking at you. I was presenting you with reality. Since you can't handle that, I'll put you on ignore.

It's always a little sad when someone I've liked has their head up their ass. And I feel bad for ED as well. As a mother you just cannot trust anyone it seems. I saw the article in The Atlantic characterizing it that way. I read the whole article the original woman wrote and I didn't see it as revenge porn at all. I do see it as a bit of a different issue. I think women are really taught to be too nice. I can think of a few times when I was young when I wish I had just walked away, instead of being polite. I also think men are taught that it's ok to keep pushing someone even after they've said "no". That isn't rape or assault, but I do like that people are talking more about what consent really looks like.

What proof do you have of this? You really think "they" have the cure for cancer and have managed to hide it? We all have the right to believe what we want I guess, but that sounds like conspiracy theory to me. Especially since American big pharma is not the only one doing research into these diseases. How about all the vaccines disease and the diseases that have already been cured? There is more money in managing every illness we have a vaccine for. Just like vaccines big pharma would make a mint of the cure for cancer. Not that cancer is one disease anyway.

One of the headlines for this article is MLK III attacks Trump. Meanwhile he says "We need to work on this man's heart". I cannot think of a more generous perspective. One that is entirely unearned. https://www.yahoo.com/news/donald-trump-apos-am-not-021030789.html

I have a lot of problems with big pharma, but this isn't one of them. Increasing blood flow to extremities is pretty straight forward compared to curing complex diseases. I'm amazed researchers came up with treatments for AIDS as quickly as they did. Remember we can't even cure the common could because of mutations. Cancer is a bitch and it won't surprise me if we need AI to eradicate it. Still, there are many treatments for both cancer and diabetes that didn't exist a few years ago and people are living longer with these diseases. My issue is more the pricing of drugs. I'm sure we all remember some of the more outrageous cases we've seen of them robbing people.

That's what I was wondering. I'm sure for different reasons though. To me it sounds like they were spending billions and not making much progress. Not sure why any private company would keep going down that rabbit hole. We can hope other companies have more promising research. Really the government should be funding way more research in all areas, but with Republicans in charge I won't hold my breadth.

Good for him. One of the scariest things about Trump's administration is how few people are taking a stand against him. There are some, but far too many people are going along to get along with this would be fascist. All my life I've been hearing that we must learn from history, but so many just haven't. It's terrifying. The biggest disappointment to me is former history professor Ben Sasse. He knows how dangerous 45 and his ilk are and he still stays silent.

Yes, I think it matters. This kind of nationalism is a disease that can spread. I like to believe that people are starting to see through 45, but I always find comments like the ones he made coming from any leader as dangerous. We cannot be rid of this evil man soon enough.

Poor Jim Acosta. He was so embarrassed having to quote 45. Then when he said something along the lines of "This president seems to harbor racist views of people of color from other countries". He was so uncomfortable saying that, while many of us are there thinking "No $hit! Not just other countries either". It still stuns me that we have an open racist in the white house. Some of them like to have it both ways. They distance themselves a little and then vote for his policies.

Damn right. Both of the guys in this story are highly unlikable to me. They may be democrats economically, but not socially. Burns thinks all Muslims are terrorists. I just don't agree that we should coddle that kind of ignorance. We've done enough of that as a nation and we are paying the price as we speak.
-

I thought the whole point was the Burns was a Democrat? That's why Goodin said he doesn't make a point of the 10% of things he and Burns disagree on. The premise of the story seems to be that we should be tolerating their intolerance to get a bigger base. I don't agree with that at all, but that's what I got from it.

Me too. It's wrong on so many levels. Not only do these people have to work their asses of for a pittance, but they have to deal with being shamed by the jackasses among us. Plus corporations are using tax payer money to subsidize their inadequate pay.

^ I don't think we have any better chance at stemming the tide of retail job losses than we do manufacturing. Maybe even less chance. It's one thing to manipulate a market that is largely business to business with tax incentives or penalties. Not that I think that will work long term, but it's relatively straight forward. On the other hand, how do you make people shop brick and mortar when it's less convenient and more expensive? Making sure Amazon had to collect state sales tax was a step in the right direction, I guess. Still, does it really make it any more likely people will head to the mall? I can also see why some people think coal and manufacturing jobs are more worthy of saving. Not that I agree in the case of coal, but at least those jobs pay a living wage with benefits. The fall of retail comes with some big problems that go beyond job loss though, there's no denying that.
