  1. I figure this will not hold water, but still, he's a jerk for doing it.
  2. I've never heard of him until the last couple of days. I just saw Nick Kristoff on CNN saying our chances of war went up significantly. Lord help us.
  3. This is sad news.
  4. This is the first I've heard of it. Hopefully, they catch the person soon.
  5. I've seen people say that maybe Junior and his wife are trying to hide/preserve assets. Not sure I buy that, but it'll be interesting to see how this divorce shakes out. I didn't read past the headline. I knew it would piss me off too much.
  6. This thread. My God, we are truly on the verge of having concentration camps.
  7. The treatment of people who are involved in terrorism is probably an area where I'm less liberal, but gods below. No one involved in this kind of extreme torture should be in a position of power. https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2018/03/gina-haspel-black-site-torture-cia/555539/?utm_source=poltw
  8. Both of these stories are chilling. I guess the first one is worse because it's happened/happening. The second one is deeply disturbing because it shows us Trump's murderous goals. I don't believe he can get it done, but the sooner he is out of office the better.
  9. http://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/378608-dem-enters-maine-race-against-gop-state-candidate-who-called-parkland This makes me happy. That candidate who called one of the Parkland student's a "skinhead lesbian" is no longer running unopposed.
  10. I wonder how many of them there really are? I see polls saying it's about 20%, which is horrifying. Yet I suspect at least 5% are lying and the real number is 25%. I guess we'll never really know. I just hope the blue wave is real, so at least we can staunch the damage staring in January.

  12. @JaneAusten Yeah, I have to give NYT credit for this one. Over $360 million dollars in the hands of terrorists and hundreds of civilians killed with thousands displaced. He told me that Hezbollah’s siege of Madaya had turned the town into a virtual concentration camp. “First people ate through their reserves of dry food,” he told me. “Then they began eating leaves and grass.” Ali Saeed held his cellphone up to the camera to show me photos of his children, one of whom fell on his head while running from a sniper and died soon afterward.
  13. My God: The cost to Qatar wound up far exceeding $360 million, but ultimately cash was less important than the deal’s political dimension. In order to retrieve its hostages, Qatar was made to negotiate a tightly choreographed population exchange in Syria, using the rebel militias it finances to forcibly uproot every resident of four strategically located towns. The transfers advanced Tehran’s larger goal of transforming Syria — along with Iraq, Lebanon and Yemen — into satellite states that will enshrine a dominant Iranian role across the region.
  14. I hope she isn't punished. Meanwhile, I'm hoping we have a small window to change course in the US. We're really lucky the military doesn't seem to be on Trump's side.
  15. I've had this same thought. Sometimes I think I'm being paranoid and sometimes I'm surprised it hasn't happened already. Just today I was thinking I wouldn't be that surprised to wake up one morning to find out that we've been cut off. Well, we do have some idea. We know they aren't afraid to jail dissidents and force women to have abortions. The way they have treated Tibet isn't exactly a recommendation either. We know they make America's xenophobia and racism look like child's play. I had a Chinese roommate my first year in college (early 90's). She was completely brainwashed. It was like talking to a Fox news addict. Facts would not permeate. At the same time she was incredibly intelligent. She basically learned English in a matter of months.
  16. The part about the media is hard to argue with. Hope he is right about Sessions.
  17. Sounds about right. https://www.vox.com/world/2018/3/13/16029526/rex-tillerson-fired-state-department Under Tillerson’s watch, 60 percent of State’s top-ranking career diplomats resigned and new applications to join the foreign service fell by half, according to a November count by the American Foreign Service Association. This country is out of control.
  18. This country is off the rails. I'm worried about what happens if (when) Mueller comes back with an indictment against Trump. How sure are we that he will comply or that there is anyone who can/will make him? I also wonder how many people out there will believe the charges are fake?
  19. I've read a few articles about this over the last year or two. You can pay minimum wage, but what makes serving worth it is the possibility of big tips, especially from wine. Every time paying serves minimum wage comes up the Scrooges of the world come out swearing they won't tip. Maybe automatic gratuity would work. Changing restaurant culture in this country won't be easy, but I hope it happens.
  20. ^ Yeah, I'm not getting my hopes up too much either. Partially because even if Abramson is right, how long is the case going to take? We could well be near the end of Trump's term by the time they get him. I'll still be thrilled to see him and his do time if that day comes, but he's already done so much damage that can't be undone.
  21. Please Lord, let it be.
