  1. To my utter shock it turns out I know the professor that was being targeted here. He's a conservative (politically liberal) Jew. He and his wife are friendly acquaintances because we have children of similar ages, so she is always inviting me to events. This is just crazy to think that these goons threatened to unleash their crazys on him just when another conservative temple was being attacked. https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/jeff-fortenberry-nebraska-professor-threats_us_5bdb343ee4b01abe6a1c4ca8
  2. @Max It will be interesting to see how the pollsters do this year. Nate Silver has the chances of the Republicans keeping The House at 20%. That's really not a terrible chance. If someone said I had a 20% chance of dying tomorrow, I'd be checking to be sure my affairs are in order. To me the number of races they get right will be more indicative of their effectiveness than if they call individual outcomes correctly.
  3. She's so much smarter. She deserves to win.
  4. I hope people don't fall for this. I know overestimating people is a good way to be disappointed, but I don't think many people will fall for this.
  5. I can only imagine what Trump will unleash if the republicans lose on Tuesday.
  6. Partially that. Also I want to see for myself that things are running smoothly and no one is being bothered when they try to vote. People think of Nebraska as all white, but Omaha itself isn't.
  7. Hopefully it means good things. I probably should have voted by mail, but for some reason I want to show up at the polls on election day. I don't even know why, I just feel the need to do it in person this year.
  8. ^ He really is a monster. I can't believe we have a minimum of 2 more years of this. Yeah, he could die, but I've never been the optimistic sort. I'm headed to Temple Israel for Shabbat service tonight. I dread it to be honest. The people there have always welcomed me even though I'm an outsider. I hate to see them in so much pain thanks to blind hatred.
  9. I do. It's the televangelist kind. Where the guy on TV is getting grannies and rubes to send him their social security checks, while he buys private planes and hookers.
  10. Partially I think it's that unstable, isolated people are being radicalized online. There was a time when guys like this would have just lived out there lives as drugged out losers. The internet has made it easier for them to find a cause online and to carry out some mission to support the cause (in their minds at least) One way you can tell they are kind of delusional is that their mission never makes the slightest difference in reality. If anything it drives more people to support whatever or whomever they were against. Just to be clear, I don't absolve any of these people of personal responsibility and they can all hang as far as I'm concerned. If we are going to have a death penalty might is well use it on these mass shooters.
  11. ^ OMG. I didn't know that he had been invited to Bible study by his victims. They were trying to include him and bring him into their holy place and he killed them. Death is really to good for the little POS, but I'll take it.
  12. I can't even imagine what it's like for people who fought fascism in the 40's to be confronted with this watered down version of it in 2018. I can only hope they live to see relative sanity restored.
  13. I guess the positive aspect of this story is that sometimes the apples do fall far from the tree. 15,000 troops to the border? That is just so stupid and wasteful.
  14. ^ What a self entitled hypocrite.
  15. This thread. 😄
  16. ^ Yes. These strange incidents, the constant attempts at gas-lighting, it's all just bizarre. Also strange that we fought a war in which 60 million people died to put down fascism and here we have Trump and his ilk toying with it. Then about a quarter of the country seems ok with it and another chunk doesn't even see it happening. The rest of what you mentioned is just normal Republican policy so I saw that coming too. 😄
  17. Yes. I see people saying that white liberals are the only ones surprised by this, but I don't believe it. I do think that other people have wrapped their heads around it faster because they've been here before in a sense. I find I just can't adjust to were we are. It feels deeply unreal to me. That so many people have fallen for it is incredible to me.
  18. Things are getting worse by the day. You can feel it happening. The open racism is just appalling. I can only hope that it abates a bit after the midterms.
  19. I guess it's not surprising that they tried to come for Mueller. This isn't going to happen. That's the real answer. However, even if it did (which it won't) it would likely apply only to babies being born now to people who are undocumented. You're stuck here in either case. 🙂
  20. It's hard to imagine even our corrupted Supreme Court allowing this. He can't just change the constitution at will (yet).
  21. Yes, otherwise I would have been messaging Marceline and asking her what we should do for you. I can't imagine you harming anyone, but it seemed to me a sign that you were being pushed to far by the insanity that is on the net. It's overwhelming at times and when any one of us feels that way we have to step away and preserve our sanity. That buzz feed article really did explain to me how people have been radicalized. I don't think we can blame it all on the net because if people weren't vulnerable to it it wouldn't be happening, but still. In some cases it seems like a chicken or the egg scenario.
  22. This article was really interesting to me. It lays out the various elections that have been influence by Facebook and such recently. It also explains how the trolls get a serious foothold. I doubt this will be news for people who are internet/computer savvy, but it was interesting to see how the cheese is made, for someone like me who only has a superficial understanding. https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/ryanhatesthis/brazil-jair-bolsonaro-facebook-elections
  23. My husband told me Mike Pence had a Messianic "rabbi" at his event and I didn't believe it at first. I thought it had to be fake. There is never a bottom.
  24. It's just plain stupid. How are people falling for this nonsense I will never understand. You have got to get thoughts like this out of your head. If Facebook posts are making you feel this way than mute the people who are upsetting you. Maybe just step away form all of it for awhile and focus on the things that make you happy like the Christmas movies.
