David Langton. He came on a year or so after Dawn died. He was Monica's medical school love, or something. They rekindled their relationship, but he died, and his daughter Nikki blamed Monica (I think). She got involved with AJ. Alan paid her off to ditch AJ on their wedding day.

The hack running the FCC got an award for being a hack. You have to laugh at him saying that he will do keep doing what he's doing because he doesn't care about headlines. Thanks for the episodes. I think 1998 was the last good year for the show. I really enjoyed a lot of it, and that was unusual for me with Y&R, as even in better years overall there was something going on I would be put off by. (I started watching around 1990 or so)

Enjoy it while it stays up. Stephanie's horribly bitchy remark about Margo early in the second clip had me howling. I got so very tired of Stephanie by the late '90s, but Susan Flannery was so damn good.

For decades I've thought she sang "the kids are gone." I thought the song was about a couple moving into middle age and splitting up. I thought, "That's a bit of an insult to Deniece that they think she's a 40-year old, isn't it?" Only today did I realize she's singing "the kicks are gone." I feel very stupid.

They brought in Rick, Monica and Jeff Webber and had the Rick/Monica affair while Jeff went nuts. They also did the story with Terri Webber, Joe Dante, and his crazy wife Mary Ellen. I'm not sure what else they worked on. I haven't seen most of that but just going by Schemering's book it was a mess.

This is deflection and hysteria from the NRA, knowing just what their audience wants to hear, but I do agree with one point - the media loves this stuff and most of their posturing about how to stop school shootings is just that. https://www.politico.com/story/2018/02/22/nra-spokeswoman-attacks-media-government-over-mass-shootings-criticism-421688 The posturing on CNN has felt especially false to me, and some of it, like Chris Cuomo pushing a story that turned out to be wrong, just ended up helping those who are against gun control.

Your recaps are a good read, as usual. I had forgotten about that scene with Olivia and Gary but now it's so clear in my head. The show didn't really know what to do with Olivia after the Peter story. What they did with Mary Catherine was very cleverly done - it would shock viewers even in these more jaded times.

I think we're all guilty of it to some degree. What bothers me more is when people frame it around old vs young and essentially act gleeful about old people dying and the young taking their place. If the last 5-10 years have shown anything I think it's shown that voting patterns are not anywhere near that simple.

I don't agree with Andrew Sullivan that the solution is to somehow distance lgb from t (although I have a feeling Andrew Sullivan would likely separate "g" from all the rest, very happily), because I don't think that would work anyway. And of course the wedding cake stuff and how glibly these stories are presented doesn't help either. (with many not realizing this isn't actually about a wedding cake or a photographer) I also think that many are very naive with the whole "society always moves forward and all those icky old people are dying and nothing can stop us now" talk. This pops on every liberal issue and is one of the reasons that they are so often caught flatfooted. There has likely been a backlash due to Trump and the far right gaining more of a voice, although to be honest based on the Clinton years I do wonder if the backlash would be even stronger if she had won. (although there would have been a tradeoff as she would have protected lgbt people and appointed judges who aren't incompetent hatemongers). I think that the rainbow connection mentality of the last few years has helped blind some people to the reality that lgbt people will always be seen as different and will always be discriminated against. We will always have to be cautious in how we act and what we say in public about our lives. Ideally the days of some of my older relatives, like the one who always removed all photos of loved ones from his wallet when he went out to bars or clubs or to see men in case someone killed him and killed everyone in the wallet, are gone, but I can't even say that for sure. There shouldn't be barriers, but there are barriers, and there always will be. The best you can do is shape the barriers to suit you as much as you possibly can.

I think the worst strike story for ATWT is considered to be the Laura stuff, which was named worst story of 1988 (for all soaps) by SOD. The rest was mostly stalling and stalling. I don't want to go into plot details in case there are things you don't know. You can find some March 1988 partial episodes here that may not be on the Astheworldstillturns page. (one has been deleted - I'm not sure if I have the copy of it around anywhere...)

I'm about halfway through the new season, but (this is likely a few days late) one of the show's creators is asking fans to get people to watch 4 episodes over the next few days, to help increase the show's chances of another season.

Will you miss Vincent? Sometimes I wonder if AWZ just keep Deniz for that iconic pool shot (or are he and Jenny popular together - or are they related...my memory is awful). I wonder if Valentin will have any story with Ringo. I know some fans initially thought they were going to get together. I don't know how his story with Easy has been received.

I think Anna's time on The Doctors was also when she swore to never do press again because they misquoted her and made it sound like she lived in a house full of snakes or wanted to live in a house full of snakes.
