Guiding Light Discussion Thread
Clip #5 from November 29 1984 has a Beth/galpal scene that is one of the most blatant examples of a talk-to character and expository dialogue that I have ever seen. It's a credit to Judi Evans that she makes it feel as real as she does. The Brandon stuff is just...so bad and so needless, isn't it? And gutless, considering they did nothing with the black Spauldings outside of a handful of material 15 years later. Greg Beecroft is surprisingly good in the scene where he confronts Annabelle, but I can't help noticing that nobody seems to be mentioning Hillary Bauer as a reason to get answers, and nobody seems to even care that she died because of their mystery.

I see that the spin on the right (and in some of the media) is that generic ballot numbers and some races (like FL-Gov) are tightening because the right is "fired up" over Kavanaugh. The truth is that these races were always going to be close, because the GOP knows how to mobilize their vote while suppressing the votes of many Democrats. It doesn't matter what the GOP says or does - mouthbreathers out there will always support them. Meanwhile, many Democrats can't even cast a vote, especially if they are not white. That isn't a sexy story, and it isn't a story that will demoralize Democrats, so we're getting this version, which will tell the left that if Republicans keep Congress (which I've always thought and still think is very likely), it's because they dared to be upset about a man who is alleged to be a blind alcoholic and serial harasser/assaulter of women, and is also seemingly a blatantly partisan hack and perv. It's a good way to help depress them enough to make the next two years easier for the extremist agenda.

Emmerdale: Discussion Thread
I don't think this return is entirely off Kim's past, so I don't think they would get the same type of writing, but sadly they aren't likely to return anyway. The biggest problem is that so many fans, and even Claire King herself, seem to just remember Kim as a huge bitch. That means we get these OTT bitchy moments, without what made her who she was.

It is. It's also blatant pandering to social conservatives before the election. These people have too much power. Didn't GA's current governor declare bankruptcy? Republicans didn't seem to care. I guess it's different with Abrams. What a surprise.

This is one of those sneeringly "clever" twists that the limp dicks on the far right think will "own" liberals. Oh you love gay marriage, so why are you complaining, ha ha ha. I hope some of the people who are threatened by this have their wedding ceremonies on the White House lawn.

What gets me is I keep seeing people say this stuff means nothing, when they were happy to jump all over anything, even a misquote or getting a date wrong, to "prove" Ford was a liar.

Sorry about that. Here's another version. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/26/climate/epa-etzel-children-health-program.html I read that if Democrats win the House, there's a good chance most of Trump's NAFTA stuff won't go through anyway. (and of course if the Democrats do let it go through you will get a lot of "they're selling out to their corporate beholders")

Maher would be such a detriment to any chance of change if he actually had any influence beyond anyone who time travels to the year 1996. He is obsessed with showcasing himself as above it all and that means inviting far right activists and extremists on to give their talking points, while he smirks and adds some pithy one-liners. To think he actually had the ego to say that if Hillary had gone on his show she would've won. That he actually thinks he has any influence beyond being an easy tool any time Republicans need somebody to depress and demoralize turnout. The truth is more people know him for being a sidekick to Vera's husband on "Alice" than they do for anything else. I just wish it wasn't with NBC. They have gone to bat for Trump in the past.

It's good to see that one uploaded again. The scenes of Dusty and John arguing, then Dusty smashing up John's lab in a rage and then John finding him near-catatonic are very powerful. It's too bad Marland needed to make Dusty so good and sweet to contrast Holden, as he could have believably had an edge. Considering that was his first or second episode, Marx had chemistry with HBS right off the bat and suited the role perfectly. The show was in a good place at this point character-wise - very few duds. I just love watching Diana. She sparkles in all her scenes. I love the bitchy back-and-forth with Lucinda. Anyway, here is a reupload of the 29th November. That second one has the scenes I always remember about Craig knowing how to use a computer. And flirting with Bev, a black employee of Lucinda's I never remember seeing much after this. I'm surprised they had even such mild flirtation between Craig and Bev at this point in P&G's history. Maybe that's why she wasn't seen much after this...- ALL: Soap Stars - Where are they now?

Watching that episode again (I think I saw it on there years ago) reminds me of the struggle Marland had with his initial plans for Holden (a manipulative, dark character) and what he made Holden once the character became so popular (angstily in wuv with Lily). There was always an uneasy mix as Marland would come up with various reasons to show Holden's harder side (his marriage to Emily, his marriage to Angel, eventually his brain damage), yet also keep the softer elements. As I don't think Jon Hensley was quite able to pull it off, Holden often just came across as a sanctimonious prick to me, with some good moments here and there (Hensley was good in the story where Lily lost their baby). Meanwhile, Jennifer Ashe always tends to overplay bitch Meg a little too much; she suited the more layered writing Marland gave her in her last year or two. With that said, I did enjoy her coolly deflecting Lily spitting venom at her. The nasty Lily is always the more entertaining one. Finn Carter is so good in the scene where Sierra stands up to Tonio. She was such a subtle, thoughtful actress and she made Sierra's transition into being a stronger character feel so real. She was one of the most unique actresses ATWT ever had, and I think this was probably the one era of the show she could have thrived in (maybe the '70s as well). My heart always swells when I see the sunrise clip telling us a new day has started in Oakdale. It brings back so many memories. Poor Iva. (I have that last one on a macro)- Favorite TV Themes/Openings
It probably could have run longer but ITV was on a mission to kill off their long-running shows at this time (The Bill, Heartbeat, Wild at Heart, The Royal). I know some stopped watching after Nick Berry left. It was also another of those shows that never left one decade, wasn't it?- ALL: Soap Stars - Where are they now?
I suppose she doesn't really count as a soap star, but Danielle Spencer, best known for What's Happening (she was on DAYS in 2001), has had medical problems and someone has set up a GoFundMe for her. https://www.gofundme.com/friendsofdrdaniellespencer- As The World Turns Discussion Thread
I asked the uploader if they could put this one and the GL up as I didn't see them on Youtube and I knew @DramatistDreamer and others were talking about wanting to see more 1986. They were kind enough to do so. I asked about a June 1985 as well so we'll see if they have it. That Astheworldstillturns channel may have gotten to this date eventually (I think they're in April right now) but considering we no longer have any idea what will happen when we wake up tomorrow I figured it was better to see something now if possible.- The Politics Thread
I think many had a feeling this could happen, they are just trying to drag out as much as they can in case something else comes out. Kavanaugh being confirmed has always been a lock, unfortunately. It's just about trying to find some hope, however thin the hope is. At the very least fighting back this much gave such a clear picture to America of just how craven the GOP and Kavanaugh is thanks to those hearings. (I know some have said the whole thing has "galvanized" the right, but those voters were coming to the polls no matter what)- The Politics Thread
Looks like it was just another likely successful attempt to con GOP voters. https://www.politico.com/story/2018/09/28/house-tax-puts-permanent-817246- The Politics Thread
