Oh wow. Which GL period? I'm glad you found that stuff - I'm sure it's great. Rona Barrett publications had a somewhat bitchy tone to them but had a lot of interesting interviews and features you wouldn't find elsewhere, with lots of backstage gossip and color photos.- As The World Turns Discussion Thread
I know what you mean. What kind of magazines were they?- Your daily (or nightly) thought
This channel has some great vintage material I'd never seen before, including an LA news broadcast right at the scene of the 1974 SLA shootout that many thought killed Patty Hearst. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCt2UipISexd0yg9VoNrxDhQ- The Politics Thread
I think there would be less cynicism about them if they were more capable of keeping the dynasties going. In the case of the Kennedys they have felt tapped out for a long time. The one I think could have had potential if she wanted to do so was Caroline Kennedy, but after all of that ugliness when she was in consideration to replace Hillary in the Senate, I'm not surprised she doesn't want to go there anymore.- The Politics Thread
Booker seems to crave publicity above anything else. I do think he's too irritating (and also tied to the highly annoying Mindy Kaling) to have much shot. Media darling Gowdy Doody is gone. Wow. How sad when the GOP has become too extreme even for him.- ALL: Soap Stars - Where are they now?
It's a bit tacky compared to the tweet/post above, but if you want to see a bare-assed Chris McKenna he posted a nice treat for his fans on his Twitter yesterday. (yes I know we can't link to it so I won't)- The Politics Thread
In other off topic news, I'm so disappointed that the only person I saw who managed the "McCabe and Mrs. Clinton" joke (which was the first thing I thought of when all this mess started) was Ben Shapiro, as it just reminded me yet again that I probably have more in common with him than I may wish...- The Politics Thread
I think most people will just talk about the spit/drool memes that started immediately. Nobody who ever does those responses seems to go anywhere.- As The World Turns Discussion Thread
Marland had similar material on GL - I think that by the time he was at ATWT he was likely moving away from that style but still had some of it in his system. As much as I loved Shannon, she was a ridiculous character, her backstory was fragrant parody, and this was compounded when Duncan came in, as he was also a ridiculous character. He had his castle imported from Scotland brick-by-brick. I don't know if P&G may have asked Marland to have this type of stuff, but I tend to think it was just his own personal taste, especially as this was at the same time as other parts of the canvas had very heavy storylines (Iva, Josh, Margo's miscarriage, and I swear I can't remember if Craig ever laughed or smiled from 1985-1988...). The height of this wackiness was Lilith, as Sara Botsford was absolutely superb and played all of the material for every bit of campy goodness it was worth, yet also gave it some kind of depth...somehow. She was delicious. Marland seemed to put most of that away after Reed left, and other than the unintentional (?) hilarity of Hannah Lafferty, Liz Hubbard's ad-libs, the dry wit of Tom and Margo, and the more intentional (?) campery of Tess, who seemed to have come to life as a protest voice against 10+ years of icky pure Marland ingenues, the show was very serious. 1992 especially is one of the heaviest soap years I can remember - almost too much so. Still, it was a good time for the show. I'm sorry he never got to complete his plans and I'm sorry he never got to deal with the post-OJ era of soaps, as he may have been one of those who could have salvaged the genre...- Guiding Light Discussion Thread
I think she could have played the neuroses of Beth (97 onward) well enough, as she played all of Paulina's many neuroses (frankly I thought she overplayed them). My main issue with Chamberlin is I thought she was a cold actress who lacked chemistry with most of her leading men, aside from Hunt Block (they were a perfect match) and DAM (a pairing they were always reluctant to truly embrace because she kept being drawn back to Philip).- Your daily (or nightly) thought
Use this to share a thought on whatever you want. I'll start. Why does Allmusic give a 4.5 out of 5 star review to Blondie's Eat to Beat album (which has some of my favorite songs of all time) and then proceed to talk at length about how much it sucks??- The Politics Thread
I think we're going to see a lot of divide and conquer with the GOP in coming years, in terms of racial conflicts. Not to go off topic, but I'm glad Hillary called out the NYT for their double standards. https://www.politico.com/story/2018/01/30/hillary-clinton-harass-new-york-times-379362?lo=ap_b1- The Politics Thread
So it looks like he's going to say something stupid about North Korea tonight, and he also isn't going to re-nominate someone for South Korea ambassador who dared to question his attempts to push a trade war with South Korea and have bombing on North Korea. And of course it's all about driving headlines. I'm so tired of this [!@#$%^&*]. https://www.cnn.com/2018/01/30/politics/trump-north-korea-state-of-the-union-speech/index.html https://talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/its-getting-worse-on-north-korea- Emmerdale: Discussion Thread
Very happy for them, yes. @Nothin'ButAttitude I don't know if you saw any of yesterday's show but Kerry had a wig on and kept pulling faces, and it took me forever to figure out who she reminded me of. Finally I realized - a much less plastic Kim Zolciak (the early years). Adam Fielding (ex-Kirin) is going to be on Krypton. Ross' big story is starting next week.- The Joan Collins Fan Club

The show did a terrible job with Stacey during Hilary Edson's stint. By the end I despised her, which is a real feat, as Hilary was one of my favorite actresses on GL. Her behavior during the custody trial was shameful and her relationship with Michael was dull beyond belief. I remember Vicky following her around town dogging her and humiliating her, and sad to say it was more than deserved. It was the least she deserved, really. I remember there was some magazine claim that JFP was going to bring her back (the character - I don't know about an actress).- Hollywood Sexual Harrasment/Assault Thread
Alec Baldwin is scum who only ever got back in the spotlight because of Tina Fey (someone I find more questionable with each year). His defense of James Toback means anything he has to say about this is clouded.- Search For Tomorrow Discussion Thread

I've never really been a huge Alley Mills fan so I'm probably biased, but her bringing it up that way was to me reckless and odd.- Coronation Street: Discussion Thread
It's even worse, sadly. A young mother was killed in a car accident and people were laughing and celebrating in the pub over an engagement, even though they'd been close to her. And someone started slagging her off, even though they'd never had a bad relationship with her. This was moments after her death.- The Politics Thread
I think this is a center-right country and that far right religious and financial figures have been skillful in using the media and the GOP to slowly but surely move the needle further and further to the right. I also think that many on the left are more likely to give up or turn against each other, while many in the middle don't care. That means the right get what they want. I noticed again after Democrats voted to end the shutdown that liberal websites were pushing "Democrats don't care about us" articles. And they will depress turnout, as they always do. That's much less common with the right, where they will still show up and vote even if deep down they know the person doesn't go along with their best interest. It's also much easier to motivate some based on hate and fear than it is on ideals and hopes. What the Republicans do is run based on making sure you hate the right people. That is your existence. Even if you lose everything, as long as the people you hate have also lost everything, then you're doing fine. Democrats still don't know what to run on or who to be. They don't have the heart to just let everything be burned down and do their best to sabotage Trump. And even if they did, it wouldn't work out for them the way it did for the GOP, because the media wouldn't let it anyway. The media, for all their anti-Trump huffing and puffing, is still dewy-eyed for the GOP, and struggle to hide it.- Coronation Street: Discussion Thread
