Guiding Light Discussion Thread
Thanks for all your reviews (I still need to catch up a few) as they have helped put new insights into a period that I watched but hadn't thought much of in a long time. I enjoy that video too. I'm also reminded that I would have enjoyed some of the last openings if not for bad narration/songs (mainly the 70th). You've helped make the OLTL thread more entertaining so thanks for popping into this one too. What a lovely tribute (and the videos are even better). I always enjoy your memories of the show, and like you, GL (and ATWT) was my favorite soap, a formative memory for me in all the joys, tears, connections, and betrayals of being a soap fan. I hope Beyond the Gates will help shine more of a light on the P&G catalogue and keep those years going far beyond us. In this broken world we need the core values of GL more than ever - morality, yes, but also respecting brokenness and healing, and the wildly different people that make up daily life.

Happy 1500 pages, everyone! What a wild accomplishment. Probably shouldn't seem that way, but these days, I take a happy moment where I find it, as I'm sure Papa Bauer would have advised. Even though I doubt the show will ever be back (never say never, I suppose), GL will never leave us, as we see here every day.

Hollywood Sexual Harrasment/Assault Thread
That's awful. Every few years he pops up again. I'm half-surprised he hasn't been hired by CBS. Sometimes I think about this thread, like with the Timothy Busfield arrest, but then I remember there are so many stories like this out now, too many to post.

Primetime Soaps
Their version of QAF was also a soap, at least once they got through the first season. I don't know if they ever called it that or not. I wonder if their discarding of any soap label is one of the reasons Sisters went so off the rails in the last few seasons.

Another January 1983 episode - Luke's memorial. There are some nice flashbacks, especially the one with Luke and Robert around 46 minutes. I notice Tiffany is the only one who didn't get a flashback - I guess there wasn't enough material between them alone. At least she got a speech. These are also the last days of Susan Moore - interesting comparing her to Willow as she often is in the GH thread. Susan is so hard. You can see why, after the way men treated her, but she's a fascinating cautionary tale. The opening Heather/Scott scenes are probably one of the only times I've seen Robin Mattson getting to be sexy on a soap. The Scotty/Heather relationship was compelling for the sleaze that it was in this period - a shame that this later led to Franco. At least Robin got a final few paychecks before she had to retire.

@I Am A Swede @Vee Not directly from the mouth of Jean Marsh, but I thought you might be interested in Alan Carr reading an old Kenneth Williams letter where Kenneth shared some gossip he'd gotten from her. Alan Carr reads a gossipy letter from Carry On star Kenneth Williams

Soap Opera Cast Lists and Character Guides- Cancelled and Current
You're right. I'm always hoping for surprises, especially before time runs out with decay. In an ideal world AI and advancing technology could be used to help with these purposes, instead of what it is actually used for.

Soap Opera Cast Lists and Character Guides- Cancelled and Current
Thanks @slick jones @jam6242 @Paul Raven I'd never heard of this show. I wonder if any survives. Given the Dumont factor, maybe not.

Knots Landing
I hadn't been watching these so just got my first look at Joan. Worried for her... I've been keeping up with Donna's Instagram - she's very active, or whoever runs her page is. She's been promoting the anniversary of The Eyes Have It, with a drag queen doing their makeup similar to her (a nice way to pay tribute but I was annoyed that they used organ music to represent '80s soaps), and she also shared a story that Ryan Murphy made everyone in the makeup department watch the video before she guest starred on one of his shows.

One Life to Live Tribute Thread
Great to see your reviews again @Maxim Marty's scenes with Jessica are some of my favorites of this period so I'm glad you enjoyed them too. You are right about what a mess Alex is around this point. They just shouldn't have done the Mortimer story. Susan Diol is wonderful as Angela. She gives her so many layers. You capture the appeal of Bo and Nora, why so many viewers loved them - more than the show and the actors seemingly did at various points over the years.

ALL: Best soap rivalries of all time
I can't remember the names of the ladies, but there was a riveting, ugly story on the South African "soapie" Generations about two women who worked at a company - one of them was a former prostitute and madame who'd worked her way in, while the other was the sister of the CEO. There were class issues which fueled resentment between them, but the ex-hooker mostly just wanted power. She found out dirt on the sister and began blackmailing her to give her more control over the company, little by little. There was one scene where the ex-hooker was going to back down, as she felt guilty, but the sister spewed so much bile at her about her past and being worthless that she changed her mind and only increased her demands. The story concluded right before some big board meeting where the ex-hooker would have had her big moment of taking the company. The sister shot her to death, and, after apologizing to her shocked brother, jumped off the balcony in shame.

There was such a vehemence against Gio from Sprina fans, it never would have worked even in the slim chance the show had gone for it, but I think the actors would have worked well together if they'd had the chance. It's a shame that Joss remains some dark cloud over the younger set. Even when she does something I should agree with, like believing Michael is innocent of shooting Drew, I still don't have much use for her.
