All: Are Daytime Dramas Finally Trying To Fix Themselves?

Featured Replies

I ask this because ever since Y&R replaced John "Jack" Smith as HW with Lynn Latham, there now seems to finally be a major overhaul going on at all three networks regarding their soap operas. Days basically replaces most if not all of their writing staff, and I would comment on another soap opera that is rumored to have done the same thing, but if I do, I may start hearing people tapping into my phone and getting into my bank account.

After all these years of fans turning away in droves, has it gotten so bad, with the threat of the daytime drama no longer being on american t.v. in ten years, that they have finally pulled their collective heads out of their backsides and are trying to change things?

Discuss, please.

Maybe they need to change the storylines and plots. Try and set it around day to day life and goings on.

I cant really judge i havent seen a full episode of a US soap opera, do you think a soap in a british style would work on US Screens?

See, I don't know. EastEnders was a hit on PBS Channel 9 here in St. Louis when it first came on, and then the ratings just eroded. They also played it on BBC America, but then it got cancelled due to, what else, bad ratings.

Now, if it were on SoapNet........maybe.

I think the daytime dramas have hit a crossroads where it's time for a change. Whether it turns out for the better is the unknown answer. I suppose over the coming months, we'll see if these changes yield positive results.

Well if there looking for a writer from a British/Australian Soap Representative then thats me lol

Does anyone have any clips from big moments on US Soaps

All soaps have dips in ratings, and producers get axed ect.

Also you can have the big brassy storyline, explosions ect - but i feel viewers dont want that all the time. Back here Brookside was axed in 2003, it was ashame to watch its downfall, in the 80s and early 90s was its best years. Then in 1998 they had the gas explosion which rocked the parade, and i guess it started to dwindle from there - because after that they couldnt help but have explosion after explosion. Here is a clip from the Millennium Club explosion. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wokxO3QJB7g

Is there anywhere i can download full episode of a US Soap, what do you recommend?

Y&R is the gold standard for soaps. If they can realize that their writers weren't cutting it and get rid of them, then the other shows probably believe they should follow suit too.

What keeps you watching/what would you want to see more off?

- Secret Affairs

- Murder

- Affects of Drugs, Alcohol and Domestic Violence

If anyone has MSN, and would like to watch live - either Emmerdale, Coronation Street, Hollyoaks or EastEnders let me know, as i have my TV card through the webcam thing for real time viewing.

Honestly, I just like seeing quality, character driven dramas. Daytime doesn't have to be about secret affairs, murder and other stuff you listed. I would love to see more realistic stories like the affects of drugs, alcohol and domestic violence but that won't happen with many of the current hacks in charge. Gone are the days when soaps addressed many real life issues.

IMO, and with the exception of Y&R which was never really in ratings trouble like the rest, it's more of a "Wow. Our ratings are tanking. Fans hate us. We're losing money! We're losing fans! We're losing advertisers! We suck. We're fucked." more than a "I really want to improve this show and make daytime amazing again!."

Which sucks. But I'm not surprised.

I've seen some eps of Coronation Street and I liked it. It was more realistic, and not everyone looked like airbrushed beauties. Of course, that doesn't work for everyone, but I would love to see a soap that focuses more on blue collar and older characters.

I had a chance to see an Irish soap on PBS called Home and Away, about the lives of soccer players, their families, and friends. That was also good, but I think you've got to be a soccer fan to really enjoy it, and if you can get past the Irish accents.

American daytime soaps would benefit from getting back to character-driven stories and attempting to focus on all their characters, not just their selected favorites.

Oh right kool, well do you have MSN you could watch, oh and Home and Away is an Australian Soap Opera, also airs in Ireland and UK. There is an Irish soap called Fair City - which airs on RTE ONE, and Wales has its own soap in its own language called Pobol Y Cym - i think thats how you spell it lol

If TPTB would fire Kreizman and Wheeler(GL) I would say that it is a good start otherwise I do not see GL remaining on the air. :(

I couldn't agree more with those points above. The shows right now have lost sight of what drew fans in the first place.
