The "foreign soaps" topic

Corrie is a completely different beast to EE and the one soap that has been consistently good for the past 6 years or so. It's very deeply rooted in its history with characters that have been around since the 1960s and approaches stories differently. Much more light hearted, very character driven. So much of what makes it popular is the dialogue but the exchanges would be lost on new viewers without any prior knowledge of the characters. It does have some great stories though. At the moment teenager David Platt is becoming increasingly disturbed and hinting at wanting to kill his mother/sister/grandmother. It's not being handled camply or as one sided -- you can see why he's come to hate his family for what he believes they've done to him.

Emmerdale is a show I just can not get into. I used to like it in the 90s when it was driven by superbitch Kim and the wealthy, screwed up Tate family but it's just become a strange panto hybrid of EE and Corrie combined. It essentially revolves around life in a small Yorkshire village and is considered to be the campest and most sensational of all the soaps. All sex in the stables and catfights. It tackles stories that the others wouldn't touch and is the only one to feature the wealthy extensively, these days in the form of the King and Sinclair families. It also has the white trash Dingle clan who are treated like a laughing stock in their run down old farm. Full of quirky cousins who don't wash, incestuous pairings and "loveable" simpletons. For some reason they seem to be loved (or at least the producers think they are) but I find them irritating and creepy.

Hollyoaks revolves around young people and always has, mostly those who attend Hollyoaks Community College. It's much better these days than it used to be and is the only British soap to use incidental music, flashbacks etc. I don't watch regularly but as far as I'm aware, the main story at the moment is a mystery surrounding who pushed evil Claire Cunningham off a balcony. She survived but is lying about the culprit to get revenge (she doesn't really know who did it). Also a teenage girl Hannah has become anorexic after her former boyfriend came out. She's friends with a model Melissa who's been encouraging her eating disorder but I believe she dies this week.

Simon has rightly replaced Tony Jordan as series consultant, who I thought had lost his way."

Tony has been busy running his own company and several other shows in addition to readying several additional shows to launch. He's probably had little or nothing to do to justify that consultant credit for at least some months.

Major. They're immediately thrown into a comedyish rivalry with Ian and Jane as well as a plot about their background in Ibiza. I like them though. Because they're ensconced in the Vic, it doesn't take over too much and their prevalance doesn't seem forced.

"Verbotene Liebe" presented its new opening on the same day as the 3000th episode was broadcasted (last Wednesday). The whole opening has received a major overhaul with new cast shots and a restyled logo, only the background sequences have remained the same from the previous opening. The soap is now broadcasted in widescreen.

    • Yes, Stacy does this both for early DAYS & early GH. I have written some for her, for DAYS.
    • Hahahha I think sleeping with almost all of your daughters's boyfriends and husbands and getting pregnant... definitely gives Brooke the right to top 1 place. Long live the whore of Beverly hills.

    • CurlyQGrl has DVDs of some episodes, that they can sell, but that doesn't matter. What is helpful: they describe the scenes on the tapes, so you can read that as recaps without ordering anything. Doesn't really give storylines, though, which is what you asked for.  Here's the links anyhow. full menu https://www.angelfire.com/tv/curlyqgrl/menu.html GH page https://www.angelfire.com/tv/curlyqgrl/gh/menu.html GH 1960s https://www.angelfire.com/tv/curlyqgrl/gh/eps/gheps1960s.htm
    • I would argue that Another World never played "everything" for laughs. Even when there were comedic scenes in some storylines there were other storylines that were not intended as comedy.  You give 1988 as the end point, and Mary was on the canvas from August 1986 to February 1989, so she must have overlapped with the despised laughs you are referring to at least half of the time she was there. I honestly can't recall any real comedy that Mary would have been part of. I don't think she was lighthearted about choosing between two husbands, MJ's prostitution, Kathleen's death, or even her son Scott dating her daughter Cheryl.  I would have said that the amount of comedy depended on the head writer and there was more comedy under Richard Culliton and Gary Tomlin in 1984 than subsequent headwriters. I guess there was an outbreak of more comedy when Cecile kidnapped Cass from his wedding in 1986, but in general the Sin Stalker wasn't presented as funny, Mitch's return wasn't funny, John's arrival wasn't funny, Reginald wasn't funny. The tone was serious even if the plots verged on the ludicrous. And maybe that's what you mean -- but I would make a distinction between intentional comedy and storylines I can't take seriously for other reasons.
    • I'm excited for us to get back to a full weeks worth of episodes and also us beginning to move into the episodes filmed once the show premiered. We're already starting to see changes in the lighting and the way certain characters are styled. Of course we know this week we have our first recast as well. After the big Eva reveal, I hope the show continues to move into a positive direction and that we see them starting to fix some of the things we've all had issues with.
    • It seems like they may have been going in one direction for Andre and then changed their mind. He had this player/bachelor thing going at first where he was messing with Dani, seemed to be feeling Eva, and then somehow smitten by bland Ashley of all people. I feel like Ashley was supposed to be the one that finally made him want to be with someone and settle. The way he talked her up in those earlier episodes was really confusing. The wonderful, amazing nurse Ashley and conveniently she's unattainable because she has a partner, but he can't stop thinking of her and takes these busted pics of her. It was a mess. However, it all seems to have been dropped. I honestly feel like Andre can go. That may be an unpopular opinion but I don't need his breathy final syllable to be content with BTG. It's always like "There's gotta be another wh-ahyy"
    • This is where McLaibey falls apart. It becomes clear that McTavish had not thought past Brent/Marion...so the energy drops and she starts throwing things at the wall (Blakes twins, Lonatrat.)   Fans HATED this funeral. Everyone is mad at everyone else, which is fine, the death of a beloved community figure would give people a reason to come together...(Quint and Nola could come together at least for  a bit to support each other, Nola and VAn could finally admit they kinda, sorta like each other) Its just an example of McTavish's mean writing.   I have a feeling they were going to make Dahlia Frank's kid but they chickened out. Making Tina a prostitute didn't help, they could have been lovers when they were young but felt society pressure to part. Marcus took over David's role (you can't have two young black men at that time...)   Get used to it...this will happen, the same storyline over and over until the end.
    • Does anyone happen to have a recording or any footage of Jennifer’s funeral?
    • It's such a shame that the conflict couldn't be resolved in a mature way between the two actors.. especially since Albee was a bigger asset for the show in terms of character and his popular will they/won't they pairing with Deborah Saxon. One of the things about Edge was that it was just as popular with male viewers as it was with women.  It's one of things I think the show forgot in the final year or two with the deemphasis on the male characters.
