LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - The CW network will look like the sum of its parts when the successor of the soon-to-be-defunct UPN and WB launches in the fall with a mix of holdovers and just two new offerings.

UPN's "Veronica Mars" and the WB's "One Tree Hill" made the cut at the CW, but the WB's family drama "Everwood" did not.

CW's pickups, in addition to new drama "Runaway" and "Girlfriends" spinoff "The Game," include the soap "Palm Springs," which was given a midseason order Tuesday.

Also moving to the new network are UPN comedies "Girlfriends," "Everybody Hates Chris" and "All of Us," and WB dramas "Smallville," "Supernatural" and "Gilmore Girls," with veteran "7th Heaven" expected to join the group pending the completion of new deals with the cast.

On the reality side, UPN's hit "America's Next Top Model" and WB's "Beauty and the Geek" are rumored for a possible pairing on the schedule, with Wednesday considered a logical place.

"Chris," brainchild of comedian Chris Rock; "All of Us," from another famous actor, Will Smith; "Girlfriends," from Kelsey Grammer's production company; and "The Game" could form a Monday comedy block that has been a staple on UPN.

Also looking compatible are "Gilmore Girls" and "Veronica Mars," and "7th Heaven" and "Runaway."

"Runaway" stars Donnie Wahlberg as a father who goes on the run with his family after he is wrongly convicted of murder. "The Game" revolves around women in the lives of professional football players. "Palm Springs," from "Dawson's Creek" creator Kevin Williamson, is an ensemble soap set in the California desert city.

I must say they've put up a VERY strong lineup and I wish them well with it! Now I'm incredibly worried that Veronica Mars won't gain any new viewers and will get their order cut to 13. Hope that happens to OTH though! :P

All of the new shows look like they have a shot of being hits! I'm glad they went with developing a few really strong pilots, instead of picking things like Ultra and Aquaman just because of the buzz. Can't wait until the network reveals the timeslots and such so we will know where everything is sitting. I also am interested in hearing what they plan on doing to 7th Heaven. If it stays the way it is it will lose a lot of money for the network.

Thanks for posting this, and I agree they picked some winners--most notaby, "Chris," "Girlfriends," "Heaven," and "Mars." But leaving out "Reba" and "Everwood" are huge mistakes! But it's good news for "One Tree Hill" fans who ached for resolution after that cliffhanger. I still don't see why The CW had to develop ANY programming when it all the hit UPN and WB shows could have padded the whole lineup. It would have been the fair thing to do, weeding out the duds by midseason. Then everyone's happy.

I understand them wanting to launch the network with some new shows. It is a good way to bring in a new audience and give your network some extra promo. Even the #1 networks will add new shows because it's never good to get complacent. Just look at CBS, don't be surprised if it sees a decline with Grey's Anatomy against CSI.

Launching shows in the midseason is always a bigger risk.

I'm confused about the comedies. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Half and Half higher rated than All of Us?

UGH.

I wish the CW well and look forward to seeing some of my favorites again (Gilmore Girls, Smallville, etc.)

Sucks they cancelled Reba. HUGE mistake.

Everwood had a good life. It was a steady (somewhat) performer for The WB. It lost a lot of it's critical praise towards the end. I think moving it and preempting it a lot this past year is what drove the ratings down. Had it had higher ratings, I think we would be seeing that, not One Tree Hill, back.

Sorry to OTH fans... I didn't watch either show, so ... I probably will watch OTH and see how it is.

No Half and Half...but All of Us? Whatever.

Only watching for ANTM and maybe EHC.

Girlfriends, All of Us and The Game don't even interest me a tad bit.

OTH, Veronica Mars and 7th Heaven are just...not me.

Kevin Williamson...can't wait to see what his thing turns out to be.

    • Well, I think she's trying to be funny, and it's technically accurate, if misleading. If you leave out the Sonni part it's "Josh left Reva to (go to) Venezuela shortly before Reva had her miscarriage because of Vanessa." I guess "Josh left Reva after finding out the child she was carrying was his father's, and miscarried because of her drugged out step-daughter-in-law, where he met a woman with split personality..." isn't as "snappy".
    • Thanks for the info. Timm was a model for years, so one could speculate he may have done something like nudity etc... that violated CBN's moral clause. He was good in the role. He had an awesome mop of 80's blow dried hair that would rival Ted McGinley.....LOL
    • Before I met Reva, I really did enjoy Josh and Annie. The beginning of their relationship was really cute, the flirting and chemistry was there. I was fully into it, but then I learned who Jeva was and realized it couldn't sustain. I just read a few interviews that Kim gave online, and it's pretty clear she loves her wine, which I love. I'm a wine guy too, so I'm not surprised she had to have a little here and there to get through some things.
    • Opinion polls conducted by soap podcasters are not the same as "soap opera award shows".
    • Unfortunately, that period of the show would likely just put you to sleep. A part of me agrees, as I do think Robert is a good actor (better than I gave him credit for at the time), but I'm not sure, aside from Harley, how much he ever clicked with other ladies. He did have some spark with Crystal Chappell. I know there were claims they didn't get along either, although I remember reading somewhere (I think) a story about how Michelle was panicking when they had to film the rope ladder scenes in Venezuela, and Kim had to help her through...and Kim had also had a bit to drink.  (I hope I have the details right)
    • Does anyone have January 6, 1999 (2958) in english?

    • Thanks for this. I probably remember Empty Nest more fondly than a lot of folks, even in our age group. I remember mainly watching the later seasons whenever I was home on Sat nights simply because Sophia was added to the cast, even though the show seriously lost its momentum after Kristy McNichol left. Always surprised how long NBC just let it run and disappointed on how it became lost/forgotten over time. A few years back once was discussing old tv shows with some folks and they brought how they remembered Kristy McNichol in Family, but none of them remembered Empty Nest until I pushed pertinent details on them.    Fun fact, Grace Zabriskie, best known for her  work on Twin Peaks, appeared in both the series premiere and series finale. (BTW @kalbir I’ve come across some very interesting 1995-96 weekly ratings & commentary look out for them in the next couple days in the 90’s ratings thread!) The 1980-81 season was NBC’S nadir for everything wasn’t it? Primetime was a disaster, daytime was in the toilet, News & Today show were forgotten about, SNL nearly on its last ropes etc. think Johnny Carson was the one thing pushing NBC through and even his show went from 90 mins to 60 mins. Glad they did give Hill Street Blues a Chance though.  Strange CBS Friday nights the Incredible Hulk was only at #46 leading into the #3 and #1 shows. Benson didn’t look too great either. The 8:00/7:00 Fri night slot really was cursed for the duration of the 80’s and 90’s wasn’t it, save for Full House? NBC wouldn’t have a successful newsmagazine until Dateline in what 1991, 1992? Funny though as of 2025 only the original recipe 60 Minutes still does well, as its competitors 20/20, Dateline, Primetime Live or companion shows like 48 Hours are either dead or useless junk to fill out a schedule.
    • You could just say you didn't like the actress from Halloweentown without attacking looks.  Not cool
