I speculate that Agnes Nixon was uneasy with the "exotic" California location and wanted a more vague "any town" location that anyone could identify with (at least in her own mind). I do wish she had simply moved some of the characters to from Selby Flats to Springfield in the scripts -- and not changed the show's location so mysteriously and magically. I'd love to know how viewers at the time felt about the change, or if they even noticed it.

That's the only half-way plausible explanation I've ever come up with as well.

Soaps were known for being set in vague Anytown, USA locations, probably so that viewers from anywhere in the country could easily imagine it to be a home of their own.

And I did read an explanation from a P&G spokesperson, back when the article THE was dropped from the title. She said it was done to "modernize" the show and attract younger viewers.

Even if I could swallow the rational for the name of the locale being changed, the reason given for editing the title was abjectly stupid.

Executives sticking their fingers in the pot to justify their salaries, I suppose.🙄

  • This synopsis covers a year I was now watching the show regularly, and actively involved/paying attention. Contrary to what critics of soaps used to say, the show moved at a brisk pace, and it as not

Yes! Those are definitely a blessing. A miracle, actually, that such a series of episodes survived.

I thought Irna wrote the show thru 68 and Ellis/Hunt were the next writers. When did Gillian Houghton write GL?

Irna wrote the show from December 25, 1967 – May 24, 1968. Houghton wrote the show from May 27, 1968 – August 16, 1968.

Thanks ! The Averys took over then right ?

Was wondering until which year you could write that stuff ? It’s so fascinating.

Yes. The Averys wrote from August 19, 1968 – January 28, 1969.

And then the Averys. I had no idea there were so many writers in such a short time period. Seems Irna took over while they searched out new writers. I wonder what the deal was with Gillian?

So did the Soderbergs take over from the Averys?

That was finally stability for GL until they left for ATWT.
