I would like to have seen where Elayne Heilveil would have went with Nancy if she had continued to play her. I know I'm in the minority, but I liked what I saw of her portrayal of the character especially in the pilot. I'm not saying Meredith wasn't good in the part, but I wonder if character would have been as flighty, promiscuous, etc....as she turned out to be.
I wonder if any of the footage shot with Jane Actman still exists ? It would be neat to see how she played the part and see if what Carroll Newman said was true about her looking like a love interest for Willie than as his sister. The cast seemed to be heartbroken for her that she was let go from the show. Heilveil said she knew Actman and she was a lovely person.
I have read elsewhere that Actman would have been fine, but Fred Silverman wanted Meredith to have that role since she had done Bridget Loved Bernie for CBS when he was there. I think Silverman also vetoed the idea of Cheryl Ladd.
