Ugghhh… Paula/Jeanne’s first time writing for Leo.

And just like under Ron, he’s still pointless and unnecessary. I wish Gabi had punched him in the face. With the way his scenes ended, maybe she will tomorrow. And hopefully, somebody behind the scenes reads the room about this character, especially now that Ron is gone. This D level character doesn’t need to be shoved down our throats anymore.  Btw, his shirt was hideous.

But I really appreciate the way that Paulina was written today. Her scenes with Johnny and then with Chanel were the best part of today. I like the way that she comforted him. In some ways, it was similar to his conversation with Marlena. And the advice that she gave Chanel was really good too. She seemed more subtle and a lot more resolved throughout the entire episode, which I think is a very good thing. It seems like the writing has also improved for Paulina, just like it did with Kayla.

Speaking of Kayla, once again she was used more effectively than she previously has. I enjoyed the way that her scenes with newbie Dr. Russell were written.

The cliffhanger was good too, but I still think Johnny is a red herring in all of this.

And yeah, I know that this is a nitpick, but how was EJ able to be a part of the Bachelor auction, and get a date with Cat, if he was half dead in the hospital?

Kayla had a line about "moving the bachelor auction online" on Monday that made me guffaw. It just sounded so cheap and lazy. You mean the 7 people crammed in the Pub bidding on Chad didn't fully save the hospital? They're also acting like Maggie's $1 million donation makes a huge difference, but realistically, that's a dent in the budget of a hospital.

If I had to guess after today it looks like Ari might soon pop up in the teen group in Salem.  She's graduating high school now?  She'd be the same age as Holly, Sophia, and Tate.   I am predicting the show will ditch Sophia and add Ari instead.  But I don't read spoilers.

Tell me I’m not the only one who felt the heat in those Philip/Doug3 scenes? I’m not trying to imply anything untoward — or offend — but let’s be honest: JPL rarely exudes classic romantic leading man energy. And while I loathe the "bisexual con man" trope, Doug3 has far better chemistry with Philip than he ever did with Holly.

I’m easily distracted by little things in scenes. Case in point: after Maggie threw Philip out of the house, she headed straight to visit Julie at the hospital.

  • Who hangs out at a hospital (or their daughter’s workplace) just to chat?
  • Wouldn’t it have made more sense to meet for coffee in the square?
  • And when Maggie reminded Julie of her old shoplifting days, I couldn’t help but think: the old Julie would’ve snapped right back about glass houses and stones.  After all, Maggie's seen her share of time behind bars (and I don't mean Chez Rouge).

As for Sophia — I doubt the actress is very seasoned, but the writing certainly isn’t doing her any favors. A clever girl would never taunt Holly right in front of Tate. She’d wait until they were alone to twist the knife properly.

This also feels like the perfect chance to reset Chanel. The actress is magnetic and at just the right age for a range of storylines, but the character is criminally underwritten. We get no real sense of the impact of her upbringing as a wealthy Black woman. Early Chanel was charmingly spoiled; now she seems defined only by her desire to be a mother. She could evolve — into someone manipulative, driven by anger, or nurturing to a fault — but she needs a few strong traits and motivations to make her truly compelling again.

    • That's me - in a nutshell. But, it's because BTG is so damn good!
    • Kelly looks so good in today’s episode (taped mid-March). I’ve always maintained Kelly looks fab in blue, and when they keep her hair straight like this. When they curl her hair, I feel it doesn’t suit her beautiful face.

    • Thank you @BoldKara. I hadn’t realised it’s only a few months away with the current YouTube uploads. I’m happy to wait until then - hopefully they won’t skip the episode this time around.
    • Am I the only one welcoming the preemptions because I've been mad busy and have to catch up on over a week of episodes? Just saying.

    • No. Agnes Nixon had worked on a number of shows before creating OLTL (and AMC, which she had in her drawer waiting to come to life). AW was only one of them. Many classic soaps have personnel coming across back and forth all over the map, it's not a unique situation. And to my knowledge very few of the head creative teams at AW came to OLTL. If you're thinking of Harding Lemay, he did only a very brief consulting stint in '98 and maybe '99, and clearly had little actual impact on the writing. Paul Rauch was also a different EP at AW than he was at OLTL, GL, Santa Barbara, Y&R, etc. Nor do I recall him bringing many writers with him. Nor did his work at those shows resemble his time with Lemay at AW AFAIC. Frankly '70s Rauch and '80s Rauch seem like night and day. Beyond Rauch, the only two examples of key AW additions I know of would be first when George Reinholt and Jacquie Courtney jumped from AW to OLTL in the '70s. They were debatably the first daytime supercouple (some might cite Penny and Jeff from ATWT), and the show attempted to recreate that with new characters at OLTL to garner ratings. This was not unique to these shows; many soaps attempted the same trick after them. It might've worked but Reinholt's behavior once again drove him to quit and/or be fired. Robin Strasser was hired several years later as Dorian, but not opposite them in any triangle. Reinholt was long gone. JFP would be the other example and the only one who actively tried to model it after AW, bringing over several of her favorite actors from AW and several other shows she'd worked on in 1998-99. She was accused of trying to remake her AW at OLTL, but it was a poor fit because of their being very different. (She tried the same at GH.) I don't think OLTL was ever seen as 'just Another World' even remotely. It simply occasionally had AW stars coming aboard. And in the late '90s, they didn't fit. Jacquie Courtney and George Reinholt's characters fit in much easier, but Reinholt's in particular didn't last and Courtney's became quite different. OLTL and AW were dramatically different shows IMO, which is why JFP forcing actors from it onto the show didn't work or last.
